Radiation Case Strategic Analysis Tool [Fact Sheet]

The LANL Radiation Case Production Planning Tool is an executive-level decision support tool for planning related to the demand and production of radiation cases. The spreadsheet-based tool includes decision factors for stockpile program demand combined with production and infrastructure planning at Y-12. The tool displays graphical comparisons of supply and demand under different scenarios. The tool is based on NNSA planning documents and process analyses from Y12.

Salts in Hot Water: Developing a Scientific Basis for Supercritical Desalination and Strategic Metal Recovery

The w21_superdesal project is part of an LDRD-DR on supercritical desalination (20190057DR). The goal of the simulation work is to use atomistic simulations to understand at a molecular level the changes in hydrogen bonding and ion solvation that occur as we increase the temperature and/or pressure and change the density and ion concentration. Our simulation results will also aid in the interpretation of experimental data and guide the development of applied thermodynamic models for engineering design calculations.

Costs of symmetric strategic games with defenses

A companion note discusses the crisis stability of symmetric offensive missile forces. This note extends the analysis to include symmetric defensive forces. It derives Nash equilibrium optimal missile defenses, which are used to study the impact of varying defenses on strike costs and stability. It treats the option to strike first as a random decision by nature, which is consistent with previous experience and provides a rational basis for interaction and deterrence without which the study of stability is vacuous.

MR&R Strategic Investments Review: OREATE (Oxide Reduction by Electrochemical Amalgamation and Thermal Extraction) [Slides]

The goal of this project is to develop a new process for metal recovery and recycle based on OREATE (Oxide Reduction by Electrochemical Amalgamation and Thermal Extraction). OREATE will be able to efficiently transform PuO 2 into metal (e.g., Pu-242) as well as recover and recycle actinide and rare earth metals after chlorination. The main objectives for FY24 are to complete the TRL assessment of the OREATE process and to achieve a throughput increase, transitioning from mg to gram quantities of metal.

Equitable Energy Transition Planning in Holyoke, Massachusetts: A Technical Analysis for Strategic Gas Decommissioning and Grid Resiliency

Buildings account for 30% of the emissions in Massachusetts and are the largest source of emissions in the United States, along with transportation. Pipeline-delivered methane gas is the dominant heating source in Massachusetts, representing 51% of heating in the state. The current gas network in Massachusetts and across many other US states is aging, a relic of the coal gas era, with thousands of miles of cast iron and unprotected steel pipes that are considered leak prone. Even newer plastic pipes are subject to degradation and in need of replacement, an upgrade that averages $2.8 million per mile of pipeline replacement across investor-owned utilities in Massachusetts.

Leveraging metal hydrides for strategic thermal energy control

Attributes of Sensible Heat Materials • Typically based on highly abundant and lowcost materials • Store thermal energy based on the heat capacity (or specific heat) of the material • Duration of thermal energy storage depends on how well the system is insulated • Has the lowest thermal energy storage density • Can be pumped as a fluid Attributes of Latent Heat Materials • Also based on highly abundant materials, but typically cost slightly more than sensible heat materials • Store thermal energy based on the heat of the phase change (i.e., heat of fusion) and the specific heat of the material • Duration of thermal energy storage depends on how well the system is insulated • Has a higher thermal energy storage density than sensible heat materials, but cannot be pumped as a fluid

2021 ATR Strategic Plan

Collaborative development of nuclear energy science and technology by three major sectors—academia, the commercial nuclear power industry, and the federal government—is key to meeting the challenges of nuclear energy. All three share a common need for experimental capabilities, whether for basic science investigations, applied research in nuclear fuels and materials, or validation of data. The Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) provides the unique irradiation capabilities to support the need.

Strategic Petroleum Reserve Cavern Leaching Monitoring CY23

The effects of raw water leaching at the U.S. SPR were modeled using SANSMIC. In addition to 18 caverns identified in previous leaching reports, six caverns have been identified for further monitoring based on the results of this report. SANSMIC continues to serve as a useful tool for monitoring changes in cavern shape. However, some caverns where string cuts were made in the middle of drawdowns are showing overprediction in the SANSMIC model when compared with recent sonars.

Mississippi's Strategic Resilience: A multi-systems approach to secure, reliable, and adaptable electric grid infrastructure

Mississippi’s electric grid resilience challenges are linked to an intersection of complex socioeconomic, ecological, technological, historical, and political challenges, exacerbated by increasing severe weather like flooding and tornado events. The state’s legacy of underinvestment in critical energy infrastructure, particularly in rural areas and vulnerable floodplains, have stressed an aging grid, creating long-lasting disruptions in electric service during weather-related outages. Effective emergency management and preparedness is further hampered by a lack of coordination across local, county, and regional scales. Using the TASTI-GRID platform and partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Mississippi is developing a comprehensive regional resilience strategy to overcome energy security and reliability challenges, mitigating the impacts of natural hazards, and positioning Mississippi as a resilient and premier destination for residents, businesses, and economic development.
