Wearable Wireless Telemetry System for Implantable Bio-MEMS Sensors

In this paper, a telemetry and contact-less powering system consisting of an implantable bio-MEMS sensor with a miniature printed square spiral chip antenna and an external wearable garment with printed loop antenna is investigated. The wearable garment pick-up antenna and the implantable chip antenna are in close proximity to each other and hence couple inductively through their near-fields and behave as the primary and the secondary circuits of a transformer, respectively. The numerical and experimental results are graphically presented, and include the design parameter values as a function of the geometry, the relative RF magnetic near-field intensity as a function of the distance and angle, and the current density on the strip conductors, for the implantable chip antenna.

Heart rate, multiple body temperature, long-range and long-life telemetry system for free-ranging animals

The design details and rationale for a versatile, long-range, long-life telemetry data acquisition system for heart rates and body temperatures at multiple locations from free-ranging animals are presented. The design comprises an implantable transmitter for short to medium range transmission, a receiver retransmitter collar to be worn for long-range transmission, and a signal conditioner interface circuit to assist in signal discrimination and demodulation of receiver or tape-recorded audio outputs. Implanted electrodes are used to obtain an ECG, from which R-wave characteristics are selected to trigger a short RF pulse. Pulses carrying heart rate information are interrupted periodically by a series of pulse interval modulated RF pulses conveying temperature information sensed at desired locations by thermistors. Pulse duration and pulse sequencing are used to discriminate between heart rate and temperature pulses as well as radio frequency interference. The implanted transmitter may be used alone for medium and short-range tracking, or with a receiver-transmitter collar that employs commercial tracking equipment for transmissions of up to 12 km. A system prototype has been tested on a dog.

Development and implementation of standards-based telemetry systems

The paper is concerned with the problem of appropriate data handling standards that allow the interchange of individual elements in a noninterfering manner and accomodate increasing performance needs without requiring total system replacement. An example is presented where an implementation (in software) is replaced by a new technology (VLSI circuitry), and it is shown how this approach can point the way to the next generation of telemetry handling systems.

Input signal conditioner for the multimegasymbol telemetry system feasibility model

The input signal conditioner portion of the multimegasymbol telemetry demodulator and detector feasibility model is described. The input signal conditioner accepts the 55 MHz wideband IF signal of a Block 4 Deep Space Network receiver and provides selectable bandpass filtering, total power automatic gain control, and frequency translation providing inphase and quadrature outputs at baseband.

Flight and ground packet telemetry systems activities at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) has the responsibility for the telemetry ground data processing for two current spacecraft which use packet telemetry. These spacecraft are the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO). GSFC has designed and built two ground systems to meet this responsibility. The first is the HST DATA Capture Facility (DCF), which has now completed its integration and test phase and is supporting spacecraft and data flow tests. The second is the Packet Processor System (Pacor). This system became operational in July 1987. These systems are known generally as Level Zero Processors. Level Zero Processors ingest telemetry composite bit streams, output selected user specific data in real time, and in a batch mode perform all necessary processing to produce individual user data files which are, within the limits of the quality of the received data, contiguous, complete, ordered and nonredundant.

Ka-Band High-Rate Telemetry System Upgrade for the NASA Deep Space Network

The NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) has a new requirement to support high-data-rate Category A (Cat A) missions (within 2 million kilometers of Earth) with simultaneous S-band uplink, S-band downlink and Ka-band downlink. The S-band links are required for traditional TT&C (Telemetry, Tracking, and Command) support to the spacecraft, while the Ka-band link is intended for high-data-rate science returns. The new Ka-band system combines the use of proven DSN cryogenic designs, for low system temperature, and high data rate capability using commercial telemetry receivers. The initial Cat A support is required for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in 2013 and possibly other missions. The upgrade has been implemented into 3 different 34-meter Beam Waveguide (BWG) antennas in the DSN, one at each of the complexes in Canberra (Australia), Goldstone (California) and Madrid (Spain). System test data is presented to show that the requirements were met and the DSN is ready for Cat A Ka-band operational support.

Software Development and Testing Support for the Avionics Systems Telemetry Tool Suite

The Customer Avionics Interface Development and Analysis (CAIDA) team helps to provide modeling and simulation software for the verification of the Launch Control System (LCS). With a new iteration of telemetry tools being developed, extensive work must be done to ensure features are implemented in an efficient manner. The authors worked to develop new functionalities in the telemetry tools, update documentation, and perform various tests on the CAIDA Advanced Telemetry Tool (CATT). This was accomplished with Python through built-in library frameworks. In addition, work needed to be performed to set up a training document for new engineers and interns joining the team in the future. The outcome of this internship was the completion of several new features, unit and functional tests on CATT, thorough documentation, and a developer’s guide to programming under CAIDA.

Applicability of implantable telemetry systems in cardiovascular research.

This paper briefly describes the results of an experimental program undertaken to develop and apply implanted telemetry to cardiovascular research. Because of the role the kidney may play in essential hypertension, emphasis is placed on telemetry's applicability in the study of renal physiology. Consequently, the relationship between pressure, flow, and hydraulic impedance are stressed. Results of an exercise study are given.
