Round Trip Energy Efficiency of NASA Glenn Regenerative Fuel Cell System

NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) has recently demonstrated a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) based hydrogen/oxygen regenerative fuel cell system (RFCS) that operated for a charge/discharge cycle with round trip efficiency (RTE) greater than 50 percent. The regenerative fuel cell system (RFCS) demonstrated closed loop energy storage over a pressure range of 90 to 190 psig. In charge mode, a constant electrical power profile of 7.1 kWe was absorbed by the RFCS and stored as pressurized hydrogen and oxygen gas. In discharge mode, the system delivered 3 to 4 kWe of electrical power along with product water. Fuel cell and electrolyzer power profiles and polarization performance are documented in this paper. Individual cell performance and the variation of cell voltages within the electrochemical stacks are also reported. Fuel cell efficiency, electrolyzer efficiency, and the system RTE were calculated from the test data and are included below.

A Lean, Fast Mars Round-trip Mission Architecture: Using Current Technologies for a Human Mission in the 2030s

We present a lean fast-transfer architecture concept for a first human mission to Mars that utilizes current technologies and two pivotal parameters: an end-to-end Mars mission duration of approximately one year, and a deep space habitat of approximately 50 metric tons. These parameters were formulated by a 2012 deep space habitat study conducted at the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) that focused on a subset of recognized high- engineering-risk factors that may otherwise limit space travel to destinations such as Mars or near-Earth asteroid (NEA)s. With these constraints, we model and promote Mars mission opportunities in the 2030s enabled by a combination of on-orbit staging, mission element pre-positioning, and unique round-trip trajectories identified by state-of-the-art astrodynamics algorithms.

Arizona Geology Trip - February 25-28, 2008

A variety of hardware developers, crew, mission planners, and headquarters personnel traveled to Gila Bend, Arizona, in February 2008 for a CxP Lunar Surface Systems Team geology experience. Participating in this field trip were the CxP Space Suit System (EC5) leads: Thomas (PLSS) and Ross (PGS), who presented the activities and findings learned from being in the field during this KC. As for the design of a new spacesuit system, this allowed the engineers to understand the demands this type of activity will have on NASA's hardware, systems, and planning efforts. The engineers also experienced the methods and tools required for lunar surface activity.

A Proposal for A Lean, Fast Mars Round-Trip Mission Architecture: Using Current Technologies for A Human Mission to Mars In The 2030s

We present a lean-minded, fast-transfer mission strategy and architecture concept for a first human mission to Mars that deliberately utilizes a current-technology-favored approach by means of introducing and quantitatively dening two pivotal parameters: 1) an end-to-end Mars mission duration of approximately one year, and 2) a deep space habitat of approximately 4050 metric tons. These parameters are identified and introduced by a 2012 deep space habitat study conducted at the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) that focused on a subset of recognized high-engineering-risk factors that may otherwise inhibit or encumber remote space travel to destinations such as Mars or near-Earth asteroids (NEAs). Additional constraints in the study favoring current technology and a lean-minded (very short) surface stay on Mars are shown to offer such Mars mission opportunities in the 2030s, enabled by a combination of on-orbit staging, mission element pre-positioning, and unique round-trip trajectories identied by state-of-the-art astrodynamics algorithms.

Planning for a Martian Road Trip – The Mars2020 Mobility Systems Design

The Perseverance rover landed in Jezero Crateron Mars on February 18, 2021, marking the beginning of anepic road trip across Mars. The guiding principle of thePerseverance rover design was to replicate Curiosity, exceptfor when the new mission objectives mandated a change. The scientific objectives require that Perseverance drivemore quickly and more efficiently through more complexterrain than its predecessors. The mobility system forPerseverance exemplifies this, in that key portions areidentical, yet others have had major upgrades. Key upgradesinclude more tractive and more robust tires, newengineering cameras, a new computer dedicated for imageprocessing, and a more efficient AutoNav software suite. This paper will follow how the scientific objectives led tothe key and driving mobility requirements and how theserequirements were decomposed at the different subsystems.

Round-Trip Mars Mission Mass Challenges

As noted in the 2022 Architecture Concept Review Mars Transportation, white paper, the distance between Earth and Mars changes constantly as the two planets revolve around the Sun. Regardless of their relative position, traveling to Mars requires significantly more energy than lunar missions. However, the distance between the planets is only part of the story. This white paper explains how gravity wells, combined with the distance and desired transit duration between them, serve as a mass, and potentially cost, multiplier for a round-trip human Mars mission.

Simulation of Peach Bottom turbine trip transient with RETRAN-3D using BXFGEN

The Peach Bottom 2 Turbine Trip transient is used to evaluate the capabilities and accuracy of coupled 3-D neutronics/thermal hydraulics best estimate calculations for support of safety analysis. Selected results, obtained with RETRAN-3D, are compared to available measurements and benchmark results. The comparisons are analyzed and the application of RETRAN-3D for a best estimate analysis approach within the safety analysis methodology is discussed. Overall, both the thermal-hydraulic and neutronic results show a good comparison to the experimental data, and the model is considered to accurately predict test data. In particular, the initial acoustic response of the main steam line and the subsequent main pressurization stages are well-predicted. During the main pressurization stage, the timing and magnitude of the in-core local pressurization and associated void compression are properly predicted based upon the agreement between local power range monitors (LPRM) predictions upwards, but the shift is slightly underpredicted. This indicates the methodology is well-posed for simulating this class of transient response.

Fast Charging Infrastructure for Electrifying Road Trips to and from National Parks in the Western United States

This study investigated the fast-charging infrastructure needed by 2030 to enable seamless electrified road trips to and from national parks and monuments in seven western states: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. It also estimated impacts to the electric grid. The research team investigated how on-route charging infrastructure projections change with different parameters or assumptions, as do related charging loads and grid impacts. NREL conducted the study in partnership with utility service provider PacifiCorp and Utah State University as part of the Western Smart Regional EV Adoption and Infrastructure at Scale project.

Insights into the Transformation-Induced Plasticity (TRIP) Effect in Ti-Free Grade 300 Maraging Steel Manufactured by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF)

The near-net fabrication capabilities of laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF) offer the potential to manufacture tools with complex cooling channels that can improve the production efficiency of the tools with reduced greenhouse gas emissions. High strength, toughness, and wear resistance are some of the key properties required by the tooling industries to qualify tools. While strength can be increased through appropriate heat treatments, the increase in strength comes with an associated ductility loss. Here, we show that the non-equilibrium conditions inherent to LPBF can suppress the transformation-induced plasticity effect to room temperature in a Ti-free version of grade 300 maraging steel (G300MS), which is commonly not observed at room temperature in G300MS manufactured using conventional methods. The presence of retained austenite along with Ni-rich regions was found to increase the kinetics for austenite reversion during aging, thereby enabling the transformation of austenite into ε martensite during tensile deformation at room temperature, in turn increasing the strength with minimal ductility loss.

Integrated U.S. nationwide corridor charging infrastructure planning for mass electrification of inter-city trips

This study introduces an integrated modeling framework to evaluate long-term national corridor charging infrastructure requirements in the United States to support the growing inter-city charging demand with the rapid growth in the battery electric vehicle (BEV) market. The core model is an optimization model that considers spatial and temporal dimensions and models heterogeneous behaviors between travelers. The model also introduces the travelers’ inconvenience cost function by linking travelers’ acceptance of the charging infrastructure with exogenous technology and social factors. The inconvenience cost function simulates mode choice between BEVs and alternative modes by heterogenous travelers. We applied the framework to assess the inter-regional charging infrastructure requirements for the entire U.S. mainland interstate highway network. We evaluated impacts on the infrastructure design and its public acceptance with changes in policy, technology, and demographic characteristics, and we also quantified the importance of modeling full-scale inter-regional charging infrastructure requirements compared to the conventional regional level analyses.
