Grid Parameters and Voltage Estimation Approach Integrating Data-Driven Converter Model

With Measurements of grid voltage and current are essential for the optimal operation of the grid protection and control (P&C) systems. Grid parameters vary through time during the faults and especially in the converter interfaced resources (CIRs) rich power grid, and thus accurate estimation is critical to avoid the mis-operation of the P&C systems. In this paper, a moving horizon estimation (MHE) as an observer is devised and applied to estimate the grid line parameters and grid voltages for protection enhancement. Due to the proprietary and confidentiality of CIRs, the proposed approach uses the black-box model to represent their dynamics. Leveraging the easily accessible measurements of output current from the black-box model of CIR and voltage at the point of common coupling, the proposed method estimates the grid impedance and grid voltage during normal and faulty operating conditions. The performance shows that the optimization-based observer was able to closely observe the accurate states and parameters, which can be utilized by the P&C systems.

Combined Effects of Electric Vehicle Charging and Rooftop Solar Integration on Voltage Imbalance in Residential Distribution Networks

Residential electric vehicle (EV) chargers, as single phase loads, contribute to unbalanced voltage drops across phases, while rooftop solar systems, as single phase generators, can exacerbate voltage imbalance by causing unbalanced voltage increases. This paper investigates combined effects of residential EV charging and rooftop solar generation on voltage imbalance in residential distribution grids. The study examines these simultaneous impacts using the IEEE 8500-node test system, enhanced with a secondary network to realistically model the EV chargers and rooftop solar integration. To account for the variability and uncertainty in the EV charging loads and solar generation, a Monte Carlo approach is employed to capture and quantify the simultaneous impact of the EV charging and rooftop solar integration. In this approach, multiple influencing factors are considered, including state-of-charge (SOC), maximum charging power levels, and geographic distribution of chargers. The results provide practical insights for utilities and stakeholders, offering expectations for planning and operating strategies that effectively manage the increasing adoption of EVs and solar power while maintaining grid reliability.

Solvent–Diluent Engineering of Normal-Concentration Organosulfur Electrolytes for High-Voltage Lithium-Ion Batteries

Enabling high‑voltage batteries depends critically on rational electrolyte design. Conventional carbonate electrolytes with LiPF 6 suffer from insufficient oxidative stability, motivating the use of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) for its superior high‑temperature and high‑voltage performance. However, LiFSI is relatively costly, and its electrolytes often require high concentrations to suppress aluminum current collector corrosion in cathode architectures and to adequately passivate electrode interfaces. Here, a low‑concentration LiFSI electrolyte is realized by combining a high‑voltage organosulfur solvent, ethyl methyl sulfone (EMS), with a non‑solvating fluorinated diluent, fluorobenzene (FB). Extended cycling of LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) full cells to 4.5 V reveals substantial long‑term performance advantages over conventional carbonate electrolytes. Comparison with a popular cyclic sulfone, tetramethylene sulfone (TMS), shows that ring‑containing structures such as TMS strongly influence passivation behavior, ultimately limiting performance and narrowing the viable operating window. Overall, EMS is identified as a uniquely stable solvent for LiFSI‑based electrolytes operating at moderately high voltages.

ULTRAFAST HIGH-VOLTAGE KICKER SYSTEM HARDWARE FOR ION CLEARING GAPS

Ionization scattering of electron beams with residual gas molecules causes ion trapping in electron rings, both in a collider and electron cooling system. These trapped ions may cause emittance growth, tune shift, halo formation, and coherent coupled bunch instabilities. To clear the ions and prevent them from accumulating turn after turn, the gaps in a temporal structure of the beam are used. Typi- cally, the gap in the bunch train has a length of a few per- cent of the ring circumference. In those regions, the extrac- tion electrodes with high pulsed voltages are introduced. In this paper, we present the design consideration and initial test results of the high-voltage pulsed kicker hardware that includes vacuum device and pulsed voltage driver, capable of achieving over 3 kV of deflecting voltage amplitude, rise and fall times of less than 10 ns, 100 ns flat-top duration at 1.4 MHz repetition rate.

Synchrophasor-Based Zonal Current Differential Protection for Secondary Low Voltage Networks

This report describes an approach to utilizing phasor measurement unit (PMU) data from multiple Intelligent Electronics Devices (IEDs) in a low-voltage network to produce a differential scheme for protecting the medium-voltage feeder and low-voltage network transformers. The proposed protection scheme is designed and prototyped on a real-time automation controller. Its performance is evaluated using real-time controller hardware-in-the-loop simulation. Lab testing results indicate that the proposed protection scheme allows significant distributed energy resources (DER) backfeed and enables selective and fast protection of medium voltage feeders.

Voltage Service Limits Smart Contract Using Distributed Ledger Technology for Electrical Utility Grid with Customer-Owned Generator

Modern electrical grids face growing stability risks from customer-owned generators, especially at points of common couplings (PCCs). Disruptive behavior from power-electronic sources can cause protective relays to isolate problematic generators, making measurement integrity critical. This article presents a distributed ledger technology (DLT) approach that uses smart contracts to evaluate PCC voltage measurements and trigger backup breaker operations. The approach is framed as a verifiable, multi-organization attestation and audit layer, not as a real-time control security mechanism. In the proposed architecture, voltage measurements from a hardware protective relay are anchored on a DLT through the Cyber Grid Guard (CGG) system for attestation by both the grid utility and customer-owned generator. A Voltage Service Limits (VSLs) smart contract evaluates the on-chain measurements against allowable phase-voltage limits derived from the ANSI C84.1 standard. The framework is validated in a hardware-relay-in-the-loop test bed under sustained-undervoltage, sustained-overvoltage, and transient line-to-line fault scenarios. The results show that the VSL smart contract can process these measurements and issue backup breaker actions consistent with the defined service-limit criteria, demonstrating the DLT potential as a verifiable audit layer at the PCC that complements primary protection.

Continuation of surge life of transient voltage suppressor

Efforts expended in testing, analyzing and the development of a meaningful definition of the mean number of peak pulses before failure (mp2bf) levels of a family of transient voltage suppressor devices were documented. Tests were done to determine the ability of the transient suppressor to effectively and reliably protect against severe short term, millisecond range, and transient voltages of the types resulting from inductive load switching and induced lightning. Existing pulse testing instrumentation was utilized, interfaced to an automatic sequencing test rack accommodating up to 50 devices. Tests were performed in step stress increments of 25% beginning at 25% and extending thru 100% rated I(pp) for each voltage category. The four voltage types test were the 6.8V, 33V, 91V, and 190V. Engineering efforts addressed the problem of improving the reliability of the 190V types.

Investigation of high voltage spacecraft system interactions with plasma environments

The exposure of high voltage spacecraft systems to the charged particle environment of space can produce interactions that will influence system operation. An experimental investigation of these interactions has been undertaken for insulator and conductor test surfaces biased up to plus or minus 1 kV in a simulated low earth orbit charged particle environment. It has been found that these interactions are controlled by the insulator surfaces surrounding the biased conductors. For positive applied voltages the electron current collection can be enhanced by the insulators. For negative applied voltages the insulator surface confines the voltage to the conductor region; this can cause arcing. Understanding these interactions and the technology to control their impact on system operation is essential to the design of solar cell arrays for ion drive propulsion applications that use direct drive power processing.
