Timelike meson form factors beyond the elastic region from lattice QCD

We present a calculation of the vector-isovector timelike form factors of the pion and the kaon using lattice quantum chromodynamics. We calculate two-point correlation functions with m π ∼ 280 MeV , extracting both the finite-volume spectrum and matrix elements for these states created from the vacuum by a vector current. After determining the coupled-channel π π , K K ¯ scattering amplitudes, we perform the necessary correction for the significant finite-volume effects present in the current matrix elements, leading to the timelike form factors. We find these to be dominated by the presence of the ρ resonance, and we extract its decay constant by an analytic continuation of the amplitudes to the resonance pole. In addition, the spacelike pion form factor is determined on the same lattice configurations, and a dispersive parametrization is used to simultaneously describe the spacelike and elastic timelike regions. Recent progress in low energy neutrino scattering physics and its implications for the standard and beyond the standard model physics

Neutrinos continue to provide a testing ground for the structure of the standard model of particle physics as well as hints towards the physics beyond the standard model. Neutrinos of energies spanning over several orders of magnitude, originating in many terrestrial and astrophysical processes, have been detected via various decay and interaction mechanisms. At MeV scales, there has been one elusive process, until a few years ago, known as coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) that was theoretically predicted over five decades ago but was never observed experimentally. The recent experimental observation of the CEvNS process by the COHERENT collaboration at a stopped pion neutrino source has inspired physicists across many subfields. This has vital implications for nuclear physics, high-energy physics, astrophysics, and beyond. CEvNS, being a low-energy process, provides a natural window to study light, weakly-coupled, new physics in the neutrino sector. In this review, we intend to provide the current status of low energy neutrino scattering physics and its implications for the standard and beyond the standard model physics. We discuss the general formalism of calculating the tree-level CEvNS cross section and present estimated theoretical uncertainties on the CEvNS cross section stemming from different sources. We also discuss the inelastic scattering of tens of MeV neutrinos that have implications for supernova detection in future neutrino experiments. We discuss how the CEvNS experiments can be used as a testing ground for the Standard Model (SM) weak physics as well as in searching for the Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics signals. Any deviation from the SM predicted event rate either with a change in the total event rate or with a change in the shape of the recoil spectrum, could indicate new contributions to the interaction cross-section. The SM implications include the study of weak nuclear form factor and weak mixing angle. The BSM studies include non-standard interactions, neutrino electromagnetic properties, and sterile neutrino searches. In conclusion, stopped pion facilities are also a copious source of neutral and changed mesons that allow study of several dark sector physics scenarios such as vector portal models, leptophobic dark matter as well as axion-like particle searches.

$B$-meson semileptonic decays with highly improved staggered quarks

We present an update of the Fermilab Lattice and MILC Collaborations project to compute the form factors for semileptonic $B_{(s)}$-meson decays. Our calculation uses the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action for sea and valence quarks, and ensembles with up, down, strange, and charm quarks in the sea. Using a highly improved action with the MILC Collaboration's gauge ensembles with lattice spacings down to $a\approx0.03$ fm, allows the heavy valence quarks to be treated with the same discretization as the light and strange quarks. This unified treatment of the valence quarks allows for absolutely normalized vector currents, bypassing the need for perturbative matching, which has been a source of uncertainty in previous calculations of $B$-meson decay form factors by our collaboration. All preliminary form-factor results are blinded.

Dark matter through the quark vector current portal

We consider models of light dark matter coupled to quarks through a vector current interaction. For low energies, these models must be treated through the effective couplings to mesons, which are implemented here through the chiral Lagrangian. We find the rates of dark matter annihilation and decay to the light mesons, and find the expected photon spectrum from the decay of the hadrons. We compare to current and future observations, and show that there is a significant discovery reach for these models.

Asymptotic behavior of meson transition form factors

One of the open issues in evaluations of the contribution from hadronic light-by-light scattering to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (g - 2)µ concerns the role of heavier scalar, axial-vector, and tensormeson intermediate states. The coupling of axial vectors to virtual photons is suppressed for small virtualities by the Landau–Yang theorem, but otherwise there are few rigorous constraints on the corresponding form factors. In this paper, we first derive the Lorentz decomposition of the two-photon matrix elements into scalar functions following the general recipe by Bardeen, Tung, and Tarrach. Based on this decomposition, we then calculate the asymptotic behavior of the meson transition form factors from a light-cone expansion in analogy to the asymptotic limits for the pseudoscalar transition form factor derived by Brodsky and Lepage. Finally, we compare our results to existing data as well as previous models employed in the literature.

Constituent model of light hybrid meson decays

A model of light hybrid mesons and their strong decays is developed. The model employs a gluonic quasiparticle to describe low energy gluodynamics and uses the QCD Hamiltonian in Coulomb gauge to guide the construction of states and decay amplitudes. We compute the partial widths of the twelve low lying isovector and vector hybrids. Implications of these results on hybrid searches are also made, with the chief conclusions being that direct observation of the vector states will be difficult, that a hybrid π ( 1800 ) has distinctive decay characteristics, a narrow η ( 1900 ) hybrid should exist, an η 1 ( 1750 ) should be sought, and that the exotic nature of J P C = 2 − + hybrid mesons should be discernible with sufficient data. We argue that the isovector π 2 hybrid has been discovered, giving a total of four possible hybrid mesons, π 1 ( 1600 ) , η 1 ( 1855 ) , π ( 1800 ) , and π 2 ( 2360 ) , which appear to be filling out the low lying hybrid supermultiplet in the expected fashion. New physics particles mixing with mesons: Production in the fragmentation chain

A class of extensions to the Standard Model adds hypothetical long-lived particles (LLPs) that have mass- or kinetic-mixing with neutral mesons, such as pions or rho mesons. The mixing can contribute significantly to the production of LLPs at proton accelerator experiments, and no consistent description of these production modes exists in the literature. In this paper, we develop a framework for studying different LLPs—dark photons, vector mediators coupled to the baryon current, and axionlike particles with different coupling patterns. In particular, we implement the production mechanisms in PYTHIA 8, study how the overall flux and kinematic distributions depend on the LLP’s mass, and compare various subprocesses where the mixing contributes—proton bremsstrahlung, meson decay, and production in the fragmentation chain. We find that our new description of LLP production predicts an integrated flux that differs from current approaches by one to two orders of magnitude, and highlight the unavoidable theoretical uncertainties coming from poor knowledge of the properties of heavy mesons.

Limits on W R from Meson Decays

In this Letter we show that pseudoscalar meson leptonic decay data can be used to set stringent limits on the mass $m$ W$_{R}$ of a right-handed vector boson, such as the one that appears in left-right symmetric models. We have shown that for a heavy neutrino with a mass $m_N$ in the range 50 < $m_N$/MeV < 1900 one can constraint $m$ W$_{R}$ ≳ (4–19) TeV at 90% CL. This provides the most stringent experimental limits on the $W_R$ mass to date for this heavy neutrino mass range.

Excited J -- Resonances in Meson-Meson Scattering from Lattice QCD

Understanding the excited light meson spectrum is vital to our understanding of how quarks and gluons bind to become hadrons. This sector is home to a plethora of states including hadrons laying outside the quark model. Distinguishing the exotics from the rest of the spectrum would be made easier if we first had a handle on the light qq¯ spectrum. I present the first determination of excited light JP C = 1--, 2--, 3-- resonances in meson-meson scattering at the SU(3) flavor point from lattice QCD. This system can be described in the context of pseudoscalar-vector elastic scattering and I determine two 1-- resonances; a lighter broader state followed by a heavier narrow state, one broad 2-- resonance, and one narrow 3-- resonance. This is the first calculation in lattice QCD that successfully extracts two resonances from the same partial wave, as well as the first calculation of a light 2-- resonance. I present the results in terms of the physical omega*/J , phi*/J resonances decaying into final states pi rho, KK¯*, eta omega and others, and compare to experiment as well as a popular phenomenological model.

$B \to π$, $B_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}$ from 2+1+1 Flavor Lattice QCD

We present a lattice-QCD calculation of the hadronic form factors for $B$-meson semileptonic decays computed using the highly improved staggered quark action for both valence and sea quarks on the MILC collaborations 2+1+1-flavor ensembles with lattice spacing ranging from 0.09 fm to 0.03 fm, many with physical pion masses On our finest ensembles, we compute the form factors directly at the physical $b$-quark mass. We discuss the computational setup and analysis strategies for two- and three-point correlation functions. For $B_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}$ we present preliminary results of chiral-continuum fits for the scalar and vector form factors. The goal of this project is a percent-level determination of the scalar and vector form factors to enable high-precision determinations of $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$. This work fits into a broader program of lattice-QCD studies of weak $B$-meson decays by the Fermilab Lattice and MILC Collaborations.

Analysis of Three Body Decays in Quasi-Real Photoproduction

This thesis presents preliminary measurements of the moments of angular distribution for the K?K+ mesonic final state using a quasi-real, linearly polarised photon. Two of the main points of focus for this analysis were the development of the formalism for photoproduced vector-pseudoscalar decay and the tools by which the analysis was carried out. The formalism described how the moments of angular distribution could be extracted from the angular decay variables, and how they related to resonance decays in terms of partial waves. In extracting the moments, it was found that adapted Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods proved to be more effective in terms of extracting results from the data compared to the sole use of gradient descent based fitting algorithms. These measurements are complementary to other decay channels and production mechanisms, with the global aim of probing the existence of exotic mesons. Data from this analysis was taken by the CLAS collaboration at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) by scattering from a liquid hydrogen target using a 10.6 GeV electron. This work was done within the MesonEx program at CLAS12 that aims to map the spectrum of mesons, and in doing so, gain a greater understanding of Quantum ChromoDynamics (QCD) and the strong force.

Form factors for semileptonic B-decays with HISQ light quarks and clover b-quarks in Fermilab interpretation

We compute the vector, scalar, and tensor form factors for the $B\to \pi$, $B\to K$, and $B_s\to K$ amplitudes, which are needed to describe semileptonic $B$-meson decay rates for both the charged and neutral current cases. We use the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action for the sea and light valence quarks. The bottom quark is described by the clover action in the Fermilab interpretation. Simulations are carried out on $N_f = 2+1+1$ MILC HISQ ensembles at approximate lattice spacings from $0.15$ fm down to $0.057$ fm. We present blinded preliminary results for the form factors.

Measurement of the impact-parameter dependent azimuthal anisotropy in coherent $ρ$ 0 photoproduction in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

This Letter presents the first measurement of the impact-parameter dependent angular anisotropy in the decay of coherently photoproduced $ρ$ 0 mesons. The $ρ$ 0 mesons are reconstructed through their decay into pion pairs. The measured anisotropy corresponds to the amplitude of the cos(2φ) modulation, where φ is the angle between the two vectors formed by the sum and the difference of the transverse momenta of the pions, respectively. The measurement was performed by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC using data from ultraperipheral Pb–Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair. Different impact-parameter regions are selected by classifying the events in nuclear-breakup classes. The amplitude of the cos(2φ) modulation is found to increase by about one order of magnitude from large to small impact parameters. Theoretical calculations describe the measured cos(2φ) anisotropy and its impact-parameter dependence as the result of a quantum interference effect at the femtometer scale, arising from the ambiguity regarding which of the nuclei is the photon source in the interaction.

Search for singly and pair-produced leptoquarks coupling to third-generation fermions in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$=13 TeV

A search for leptoquarks produced singly and in pairs in proton-proton collisions is presented. We consider the leptoquark (LQ) to be a scalar particle of charge -1/3e coupling to a top quark plus a tau lepton ( t τ ) or a bottom quark plus a neutrino ( b ν ), or a vector particle of charge +2/3e, coupling to t ν or b τ . These choices are motivated by models that can explain a series of anomalies observed in the measurement of B meson decays. In this analysis the signatures t τ ν b and t τ ν are probed, using data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at s = 13 TeV and that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb -1 . These signatures have not been previously explored in a dedicated search. The data are found to be in agreement with the standard model prediction. Lower limits at 95% confidence level are set on the LQ mass in the range 0.98–1.73 TeV, depending on the LQ spin and its coupling λ to a lepton and a quark, and assuming equal couplings for the two LQ decay modes considered. These are the most stringent constraints to date on the existence of leptoquarks in this scenario.

Coupled-channel J − − meson resonances from lattice QCD

We extend an earlier calculation within lattice QCD of excited light meson resonances with J P C = 1 − − , 2 − − , 3 − − at the S U ( 3 ) flavor point in the representation, by considering the representation. In this case the resonances appear in coupled-channel amplitudes, which we determine, establishing the relative strength of pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar to pseudoscalar-vector decays. Combining the new octet results with the prior results for the singlet, we perform a plausible extrapolation to the physical quark mass, and compare to experimental ρ J ⋆ , K J ⋆ , ω J ⋆ and ϕ J ⋆ resonances. Search for emerging jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13.6$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment

A search for emerging jets is presented using 51.8 fb −1 of proton–proton collision data at $\sqrt{s} = 13.6$ TeV, collected by the ATLAS experiment during 2022 and 2023. The search explores a hypothetical dark sector featuring ‘dark quarks’ that are charged under a confining gauge group and couple to the standard model (SM) via a new mediator particle. These dark quarks undergo showering and hadronisation within the dark sector, forming long-lived dark mesons that decay back into SM particles. This results in jets that contain multiple displaced vertices known as emerging jets. The analysis targets events with pairs of emerging jets, produced either through a vector mediator, Z′, in the s-channel, or a scalar mediator, Φ, in the t-channel. No significant excess over the SM background is observed. Assuming a dark pion proper decay length between 5 mm and 50 mm, Z′ mediator masses between 600 GeV and 2550 GeV are excluded for quark and dark quark coupling values of 0.01 and 0.1, respectively. For a quark dark-quark coupling of 0.1, Φ mediator masses between 600 GeV and 1375 GeV are excluded. These results represent the first direct search targeting emerging jet pair production via a Z′ mediator, as well as the first study of emerging jet production mediated by a scalar particle exchanged in the t-channel.

Precision gamma-ray constraints for sub-GeV dark matter models

The indirect detection of dark matter particles with mass below the GeV scale has recently received significant attention. Future space-borne gamma-ray telescopes, including All-Sky-ASTROGAM, AMEGO, and GECCO, will probe the MeV gamma-ray sky with unprecedented precision, offering an exciting test of particle dark matter in the MeV-GeV mass range. While it is typically assumed that dark matter annihilates into only one Standard Model final state, this is not the case for realistic dark matter models. Here we analyze existing indirect detection constraints and the discovery reach of future detectors for the well-motivated Higgs and vector-portal models using our publicly-available code Hazma. In particular, we show how to leverage chiral perturbation theory to compute the dark matter self-annihilation cross sections into final states containing mesons, the strongly-interacting Standard Model dynamical degrees of freedom below the GeV scale. We find that future telescopes could probe dark matter self-annihilation cross sections orders of magnitude smaller than those presently constrained by cosmic microwave background, gamma-ray and terrestrial observations.

Probing an MeV-scale scalar boson in association with a TeV-Scale top-quark partner at the LHC

Searches for new low-mass matter and mediator particles have actively been pursued at fixed target experiments and at e + e - colliders. It is challenging at the CERN LHC, but they have been searched for in Higgs boson decays and in B meson decays by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, as well as in a low transverse momentum phenomena from forward scattering processes (e.g., FASER). We propose a search for a new scalar particle in association with a heavy vector-like quark. We consider the scenario in which the top quark (t) couples to a light scalar φ' and a heavy vector-like top quark T. We examine single and pair production of T in pp collisions, resulting in a final state with a top quark that decays purely hadronically, a T which decays semileptonically (T → W + b → ℓ ν b), and a φ' that is very boosted and decays to a pair of collimated photons which can be identified as a merged photon system. The proposed search is expected to achieve a discovery reach with signal significance greater than 5σ (3σ) for m(T) as large as 1.8 (2) TeV and m(φ') as small as 1 MeV, assuming an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb -1 . This search can expand the reach of T, and demonstrates that the LHC can probe low-mass, MeV-scale particles.
