STAT7 v1.2 Verification and Validation Report

This report documents the software testing which has been performed for the STAT7 Version 1.2 (hereafter STAT7 v1.2) software, a code for the statistical propagation of uncertainties in steady-state thermal hydraulics (TH) analysis of plate-fueled research and test reactors. The key capabilities addressed in this testing were selected based on the use of the software for analysis work supporting the conversion to low-enriched uranium fuel of U.S. High-Performance Research Reactors (USHPRR) such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Research Reactor (MITR-II). This testing scope includes comparison of the code’s statistical processing capabilities using statistical tests, comparison of coolant property evaluations to NIST data tables, and systematic comparison of key TH solver capabilities to the results of hand calculations and to predictions from PLTEMP/ANL Version 4.4. The good agreement achieved in this testing campaign, within the acceptance criteria of a 1% relative difference, also demonstrates that these capabilities have been implemented in STAT7 v1.2 correctly.

SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego Verification Manual (V.5.22)

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Sierra/PMR handles the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

MCNPs Easy Sources for (α,n) (MESA):Verification with Sources4c

MESA is intended to be a direct re-implementation of the algorithms documented in the Sources manual in C++. However, some fundamental changes to the computational structure and logic were made to avoid the use of goto, require consistency in input definition, and reduce computational approximations in later steps of three-layer problems. In addition, MESA uses α-decay information from ISC libraries (based on ENDF). In most cases, differences between Sources4c and MESA are dominated by differences in decay energy spectra and intensities. To verify this we have reproduced 6 problems that are documented examples or samples in Sources4c. These problems cover the three types of problems MESA currently supports: homogeneous, interface, and three-layer.

An Advanced Microscopic Energy Consumption Model for Automated Vehicle:Development, Calibration, Verification

The automated vehicle (AV) equipped with the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system is expected to reduce the fuel consumption for the intelligent transportation system. This paper presents the Advanced ACC-Micro (AA-Micro) model, a new energy consumption model based on micro trajectory data, calibrated and verified by empirical data. Utilizing a commercial AV equipped with the ACC system as the test platform, experiments were conducted at the Columbus 151 Speedway, capturing data from multiple ACC and Human-Driven (HV) test runs. The calibrated AA-Micro model integrates features from traditional energy consumption models and demonstrates superior goodness of fit, achieving an impressive 90% accuracy in predicting ACC system energy consumption without overfitting. A comprehensive statistical evaluation of the AA-Micro model's applicability and adaptability in predicting energy consumption and vehicle trajectories indicated strong model consistency and reliability for ACC vehicles, evidenced by minimal variance in RMSE values and uniform RSS distributions. Conversely, significant discrepancies were observed when applying the model to HV data, underscoring the necessity for specialized models to accurately predict energy consumption for HV and ACC systems, potentially due to their distinct energy consumption characteristics.

Thermonuclear Fusion Verification of Staged Z-Pinch Fusion on a 0.5 MA LTD Pulsed Power Generator (Final Report)

LLNL fielded neutron detectors at UCSD’s CESZAR facility during the experimental campaigns investigating the staged Z-pinch concept. This concept uses high current to compress a cylindrical plasma composed a high atomic number gas, such as argon, surrounding fusion fuel. LLNL analyzed data from the diagnostics and improved the diagnostic setup specific to the experiment. This work helps to advance the mission creating a fusion energy source, which is a benefit to the economy and for energy security.

Hardware-in-the-loop Laboratory Performance Verification of Flexible Building Equipment in a Typical Commercial Building

This project aims to develop high-resolution equipment performance and occupant data that quantifies demand flexibility in typical commercial buildings. The dataset documented in this report includes comprehensive time-series measurements from hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiments conducted across multiple testbeds designed to simulate realistic operational environments for HVAC systems. Specifically, it captures minute-by-minute high-resolution data on the performance of various typical HVAC systems, including a variable-air-volume (VAV) air handling unit (AHU) system with chillers and an ice tank in the Intelligent Building Agents Laboratory (IBAL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a two-stage air-source heat pump (ASHP) at the NIST, and a water-source heat pump (WSHP) at Texas A&M University (TAMU). The data were generated under a range of controlled conditions reflecting different grid scenarios and climatic influences, as well as various control strategies, building types, occupancy patterns, and occupant behaviors. This dataset provides DE-EE0009153 Final Report 5 detailed insights into the demand flexibility of these systems, including their response to grid signals, occupant behaviors, energy consumption patterns, and operational efficiency under different conditions.

Transition of SRT Source Term Software to Modern Version Control System to Enable More Efficient Verification, Validation, and User Engagement

The Simplified Radionuclide Transport (SRT) code assists in reactor design and licensing by providing a detailed analysis of radionuclide transport under specific transient scenarios. This analysis is essential for ensuring that reactors meet safety and regulatory standards before they are authorized to operate. Mechanistic source term analysis, which involves a realistic evaluation of radionuclide behavior from the source to the environment, is a key component of this process. It provides a comprehensive understanding of potential release scenarios, supporting the development of robust safety measures.

Renewable Hydrogen to Vehicle (RH2V) – Operation Verification and Risk Mitigation Studies: Original Agreement (Modification 0) (CRADA Final Report)

Toyota has announced plans for commercial fuel cell vehicle deployment in 2015. To fully realize the benefits of fuel cell vehicles (zero emission with no performance loss in terms of vehicle range and capability), hydrogen produced efficiently from renewable sources is necessary. Most of the hydrogen fueling stations today utilize hydrogen reformed from natural gas (produced onsite or delivered). This enables more stations to be deployed cost-effectively within a network. Producing and using cost-effective renewable hydrogen in fuel cell vehicles will enable realization of the full potential. A viable option of green hydrogen that reliably delivers on the full suite of benefits for Toyota fuel cell vehicle drivers is needed. NREL is in a unique position to analyze and optimize renewable hydrogen production scenarios using the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF), a facility that is specifically designed to evaluate renewable energy integration technologies. As the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development, NREL has extensive knowledge of photovoltaic systems as well as alternative renewable technologies for efficient and reliable production of green hydrogen.
