Novel quantum states of matter in moiré materials (2023 Aspen Winter Conference)

This report is to summarize the proceedings of the conference “Novel Quantum States of Matter in Moiré Materials,” which was held at the Aspen Center for Physics, March 12 – 17, 2023. The conference organizers thank the Department of Energy (DOE) for providing funding support for the conference. The advent of moiré quantum materials has opened a highly tunable platform for exploring the interplay between electronic structure, interactions, symmetry, and topology. Since the discovery of correlated insulator states and superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), a growing variety of moiré systems have emerged, revealing novel correlated and topological phenomena such as quantum anomalous Hall systems, generalized Wigner crystals, and fractional Chern insulators. This rich phenomenology continues to attract intense theoretical and experimental interest.

Snowfall and snow accumulation during the MOSAiC winter and spring seasons

Data from the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition allowed us to investigate the temporal dynamics of snowfall, snow accumulation and erosion in great detail for almost the whole accumulation season (November 2019 to May 2020). We computed cumulative snow water equivalent (SWE) over the sea ice based on snow depth and density retrievals from a SnowMicroPen and approximately weekly measured snow depths along fixed transect paths. We used the derived SWE from the snow cover to compare with precipitation sensors installed during MOSAiC. The data were also compared with ERA5 reanalysis snowfall rates for the drift track. We found an accumulated snow mass of 38 mm SWE between the end of October 2019 and end of April 2020. The initial SWE over first-year ice relative to second-year ice increased from 50 % to 90 % by end of the investigation period. Further, we found that the Vaisala Present Weather Detector 22, an optical precipitation sensor, and installed on a railing on the top deck of research vessel Polarstern, was least affected by blowing snow and showed good agreements with SWE retrievals along the transect. On the contrary, the OTT Pluvio 2 pluviometer and the OTT Parsivel 2 laser disdrometer were largely affected by wind and blowing snow, leading to too high measured precipitation rates. These are largely reduced when eliminating drifting snow periods in the comparison. ERA5 reveals good timing of the snowfall events and good agreement with ground measurements with an overestimation tendency. Retrieved snowfall from the ship-based K a -band ARM zenith radar shows good agreements with SWE of the snow cover and differences comparable to those of ERA5. Based on the results, we suggest the K a -band radar-derived snowfall as an upper limit and the present weather detector on RV Polarstern as a lower limit of a cumulative snowfall range. Based on these findings, we suggest a cumulative snowfall of 72 to 107 mm and a precipitation mass loss of the snow cover due to erosion and sublimation as between 47 % and 68 %, for the time period between 31 October 2019 and 26 April 2020. Extending this period beyond available snow cover measurements, we suggest a cumulative snowfall of 98–114 mm.

Leipzig University W-Band Cloud Radar, Gothic (Colorado), SAIL Campaign Second Winter (15.11.2022 - 05.06.2023)

The instrument is a polarimetric W-Band simultaneous transmission simultaneous reception (STSR) Doppler Cloud Radar manufactured by Radiometer Physics GmbH (RPG, instrument type RPG-FMCW-94-DP). It was deployed about 500m away from the ARM M1 facility in Gothic (CO) near the Ore House between Nov 15, 2022 and Jun 5, 2023 at an altitude of 2913 m. The Doppler cloud radar was mounted on a prototype of a cold temperature scanner manufactured by RPG. The dataset contains common radar variables like equivalent radar reflectivity factor, mean Doppler velocity, Doppler spectrum width as well as common polarimetric radar variables like differential phase shift (PhiDP), specific differential phase shift (KDP), correlation coefficient (RHV) and differential reflectivity (ZDR). Between Nov 15, 2022, and Feb 7, 2023 the radar was operated at 40° constant elevation and 151° azimuth (towards the KAZR at the AMF1). Between Feb 7 and Mar 15, 2023 the following scan cycle was repeated in 15min intervals: zenith pointing measurements, RHI scans from 0° to 90° and 90° to 0° elevation at 151° azimuth, constant elevation measurements at 40° elevation and 151° azimuth and PPI scans at 85° elevation for wind retrievals (one PPI per hour). Between Mar 15 18:18 UTC and Apr 8, 2023 11:04 UTC, the scanner was stuck at 72° elevation, which resulted in corrupted files for this period. For that period, the files containing data are uploaded but should be treated with care. Between Apr 8 and Apr 14, 2023 the scanning pattern described above was performed again. Afterwards, except for May 17 and May 18, 2023 where scanning patterns as described above were performed, measurements continued at 40° elevation and 151° azimuth until May 22, 2023 09:00 UTC. The scanning pattern was then started again, but without hourly PPI measurements until May 31, 2023. Between May 31 and Jun 5, 2023 solely zenith-pointing observations were performed. The data provided here are the RPG Level 1 (L1) files, Doppler spectra Level 0 (L0) files are available upon request.

ANS Winter 2022: ATF-2C Physics Safety and Scoping Analysis

ATF-2C comprises four tiers with six rodlets each. The experiment test train (TT) is situated in Loop 2A in the center flux trap (CFT) of the ATR, in which typical pressurized water reactor (PWR) conditions shall be approximated. Tier 1 (bottom) of the TT tests Framatome silicon carbide (SiC) cladding, containing molybdenum heater rods. Low-enriched uranium (LEU) Framatome rodlets with chrome-coated M5 cladding have been modeled in their place for the physics safety analysis to allow the substitution of this tier with fuel if needed. Tier 2 tests LEU Framatome rodlets with M5 cladding, which had irradiated in ATR in prior ATF experiments. Tier 3 tests General Atomics SiC composite cladding, also containing molybdenum heater rods. Tier 4/5/6 (top) tests the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA)/Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) fueled rodlets. This upper tier tests LEU rodlets with chrome-coated MDA cladding—several with temperature or pressure instrumentation. To flatten the axial power profile, lower portion of Tier 4/5/6 is surrounded by a hafnium (Hf) shroud, and the bottom two UO2 pellets are of natural enrichment. The ATF-2C TT is to be irradiated in the CFT of ATR (Fig. 1) for three or four 60-day cycles.

Analyses of the C. Winter #10 Enhanced Open-hole Drill Stem Test of the Residual Oil Zone in the Cypress Sandstone

The objective of this report is to detail enhanced open-hole drill stem test (DST) of the Residual Oil Zone in the Cypress Sandstone. DST are 1) to confirm there is no mobile oil from the suspected residual oil zone (ROZ), 2) estimate vertical and horizontal permeability in the ROZ, and 3) test vertical communication between the Cypress main pay zone (MPZ) and the ROZ, across the upper calcite layer.
