The KamLAND-Zen 800 experiment is searching for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 136 Xe by using 136 Xe-loaded liquid scintillator. The liquid scintillator is enclosed inside a balloon made of thin, transparent, low-radioactivity film that we call Inner Balloon (IB). The IB, apart from guaranteeing the liquid containment, also allows to minimize the background from cosmogenic muon-spallation products and 8B solar neutrinos. Indeed these events could contribute to the total counts in the region of interest around the Q-value of the double-beta decay of 136 Xe. In this paper, we present an overview of the IB and describe the various steps of its commissioning minimizing the radioactive contaminations, from the material selection, to the fabrication of the balloon and its installation inside the KamLAND detector. Finally, we show the impact of the IB on the KamLAND background as measured by the KamLAND detector itself.

This report describes the progress in the search for particle dark matter achieved under DOE award DE-SC0012161, as well as the invention of a new dark matter and neutrino detection technique. Work supported by this award follows in three distinct thrusts: (1) the successful completion of the Generation-1 Direct Detection experiment PICO-60, which set the world-leading limit on the spin-dependent coupling of dark matter to protons and achieved a precise understanding of the response of bubble chambers to nuclear-recoil signals and electron-recoil backgrounds; (2) the construction of the Generation-2 Direct Detection experiment LZ, which will soon be the world's most sensitive dark matter detector; and (3) the demonstration of the first scintillating bubble chamber. The development of a scintillating liquid noble bubble chamber was the primary goal of the proposed work, with the aim of combining the excellent background rejection of a PICO-style bubble chamber with the event-by-event energy resolution of a liquid-noble detector such as LZ. This work produced the first ever observation of coincident scintillation and bubble nucleation by a nuclear recoil in a superheated fluid and also revealed an unexpected benefit to the use of noble liquids in a bubble chamber, namely the ability to increase the degree of superheat by an order of magnitude beyond that achievable in PICO-style detectors while maintaining PICO's world-leading background rejection. This discovery has led to new projects in the US and Canada, developing noble liquid bubble chambers both as detectors for low-mass dark matter and as detectors of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) by neutrinos produced at nuclear reactors.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an understanding of the cost-benefit of capturing Kr and Xe from the existing process of aqueous reprocessing of UNF. The study accomplishes this with a market assessment of Xe prices and volumes today, coupled with a cost estimate of Kr and Xe capture out of cryogenic distillation within aqueous reprocessing. The market assessment shows that the average price of Xe is about $\$ $60/L while the average price of Kr is about $\$ $1/L. The assessment also shows that the market structure for Xe is one of oligopoly, in other words, very few suppliers to the Xe market. The assessment shows growing demand for Xe, particularly in medical applications like anesthesia. The cost assessment finds the unit cost of Xe to range from $\$ $71.50/L to $\$ $131.13/L. This range is only slightly above the current range of market prices today, and with growing demand for Xe, prices could reach the range it would take to support extraction of Xe from aqueous reprocessing. On the other hand, the estimated cost range for Kr is $\$ $830.15/L up to $\$ $1,522.52/L, which far exceeds the range of market prices for Kr. However, as the text notes, Kr capture is already part of aqueous reprocessing so these costs are sunk costs (already incurred) whereas the cost estimates for Xe are marginal cost (if Xe is desired, then the cost estimate would result from the Xe capture).

This report presents the status of current standard reference materials for thermal diffusivity testing. In most thermal properties testing systems, it is common to use standard reference materials to show the reproducibility of the tests and certify the instrument is producing results within expected uncertainty range. The definition of reference materials or standards vary depending on the quality control protocols of the project. For thermal diffusivity, although there were standards available by the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) 40 years ago, there has been no recent NIST standard reference material (SRM). There are only a few sources that produce and provide traceable reference standards for thermal diffusivity. The certificate typically expires in 5 years and only applies to the specific lot of materials. Other reference materials are provided by the testing systems manufacturers. They are mostly well-known reference materials or materials used by the equipment manufacturers with historic data. However, most these reference materials no longer carry valid certificates. Various reference materials will be discussed along with the industry practice when only secondary standards are available.
