NREL ASSIST Barge / Thermodynamic retrievals TROPoe v0.19

This dataset contains daily files with thermodynamic profiles retrieved with the optimal estimation physical retrieval TROPoe v0.19 (Turner and Löhnert, 2014; Turner and Blumberg, 2019; Turner and Löhnert, 2021). The profiles are retrieved every 10 minutes from instantaneous observations from the NREL ASSIST-II (SN 12) infrared spectrometer. Observations are noise-filtered but not averaged in time to minimize errors due to non-uniform clouds. Additional input data in TROPoe are cloud base height from a collocated NREL Vaisala CL51 ceilometer (when available) or vertically staring Halo XR lidar, and surface temperature, relative humidity, and pressure from the collocated Oregon State University met tower. The full pipeline to run the retrieval is available at https://github.com/StefanoWind/TROPoe_processor. In addition to these temporally resolved input data, TROPoe requires an a priori dataset (prior) that provides mean climatological estimates of thermodynamic profiles and specifies how temperature and humidity covary with height as an input (for details see, e.g., Djalalova et al., 2022). The prior is a key component of the retrieval and provides a constraint on the ill-posed inversion problem. A monthly prior was computed from operational radiosonde launches at Upton, NY.

WREF Field Profiling Lidar-773 / Raw Data

The field profiling lidar #ZX300-773 was deployed on the ground in an open field 880 m south of the Wind River NEON tower in summer 2025. It was co-located with LLNL's Halo XR+ scanning lidar (z05) and Argonne's Waggle Node to capture mountain-valley flows during the warm summer season. The zip files contain high frequency data. The excel files are 10-min averages.

Barge Site - Avian Radar System / Derived Data

This is a combined data set of 67,410 bird/bat tracks from an avian radar system deployed on a research barge (MERLIN True3D, DeTect, Panama City, Florida, USA) and concurrent wind measurements from two scanning lidars (WindCube v2.1, Vaisala, Vantaa, Finland, and Halo XR+, Halo Photonics, Lannion, France). The research barge (16.5 m x 61 m) was deployed as part of the Wind Forecast Improvement Project (WFIP-3) off the northeast coast of the United States south of Massachusetts (40.9 deg N, 70.79 deg W). This data set comprises 5 weeks of data between August 27th 2024 and September 27th 2024. Radar data were provided by DeTect and Lidar data were accessed through the Wind Data Hub (wfip3/barg.WINDPROF.z01.a0) The data have been filtered and sorted into two size groups ("big" and "small") based on a clustering approach. See Snortland, A., Clerc, J., Hein, C., & Cotter, E. (2025). Wind as Driver of Bird and Bat Abundance, Flight Direction, Altitude, and Speed on the North Atlantic Shelf. arXiv preprint arXiv:2511.14983 for complete details. Data are provided in 2 files: "Birds" and "Birds_hourly" Birds: This file contains information about each of the 67,410 flying animal tracks detected by the radar during the data collection period, including parameters measured by the radar and wind information interpolated from the lidar wind measurements. We note that the raw radar dataset contained 301,618 tracks; tracks in this processed dataset were filtered based on the requirements described in Snortland et al. (2025). Birds_hourly: This file contains timeseries of the number of tracks detected per hour over the course of the data collection period, including wind conditions and sun position for each hour. These data were used for generalized additive modeling in Snortland et al. (2025).

Realistic Noise Generation to Enhance Realism of Virtual Lidar Scans

Many real-world phenomena corrupt light detection and ranging (lidar) measurements, such as laser energy attenuation, variations in aerosol concentration and composition with height, and hard target returns. Accurate studies of lidar scans using virtual lidar methods should include some realistic model of these corrupting effects to generate more realistic simulations of lidar scans. We present a simple model that characterizes noise caused by energy attenuation and aerosol stratification. The model requires limited inputs and is developed for a Halo Photonics Streamline XR lidar but is readily generalizable for other lidar systems. A critical component of this model is a model of the standard deviation of measured wind speed as a function of the backscattered signal’s signal-to-noise ratio. We derive a general model for this behavior that can be adapted to different scan settings.

Methodology for deriving the telescope focus function and its uncertainty for a heterodyne pulsed Doppler lidar

Doppler lidars provide two measured parameters, radial velocity and signal-to-noise ratio, from which winds and turbulent properties are routinely derived. Attenuated backscatter, which gives quantitative information on aerosols, clouds, and precipitation in the atmosphere, can be used in conjunction with the winds and turbulent properties to create a sophisticated classification of the state of the atmospheric boundary layer. Calculating attenuated backscatter from the signal-to-noise ratio requires accurate knowledge of the telescope focus function, which is usually unavailable. Inaccurate assumptions of the telescope focus function can significantly deform attenuated backscatter profiles, even if the instrument is focused at infinity. Here, we present a methodology for deriving the telescope focus function using a co-located ceilometer for pulsed heterodyne Doppler lidars. The method was tested with Halo Photonics StreamLine and StreamLine XR Doppler lidars but should also be applicable to other pulsed heterodyne Doppler lidar systems. The method derives two parameters of the telescope focus function, the effective beam diameter and the effective focal length of the telescope. Additionally, the method provides uncertainty estimates for the retrieved attenuated backscatter profile arising from uncertainties in deriving the telescope function, together with standard measurement uncertainties from the signal-to-noise ratio. The method is best suited for locations where the absolute difference in aerosol extinction at the ceilometer and Doppler lidar wavelengths is small.

TRACER CLAMPS1 Doppler Lidar VAD Data

These files contain 24 hour periods of data collected from the CLAMPS1 Halo Streamline XR Doppler lidar. The Doppler lidar conducts regular conical scans at a set elevation angle. These data are then passed through a typical VAD algorithm to retrieve horizontal wind speed and direction profiles. These data were collected during the TRACER project. For the TRACER campaign, the CLAMPS1 Doppler lidar collected PPI scans at 70 deg elevation every 20 minutes.
