EMU Ag-Zn battery wet-life extension test

The Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) silver/zinc (Ag/Zn) battery is an 11 cell battery of approximately 30 AH. The Ag/Zn battery is comprised of two 4-cell monoblocks and one 3-cell monoblock. A discussion of a wet-life extension test performed on the battery is given in viewgraph form.

Microprocessor controlled advanced battery management systems

The advanced battery management system described uses the capabilities of an on-board microprocessor to: (1) monitor the state of the battery on a cell by cell basis; (2) compute the state of charge of each cell; (3) protect each cell from reversal; (4) prevent overcharge on each individual cell; and (5) control dual rate reconditioning to zero volts per cell.

Modular Battery Controller

Some embodiments of the present invention describe a battery including a plurality of master-less controllers. Each controller is operatively connected to a corresponding cell in a string of cells, and each controller is configured to bypass a fraction of current around the corresponding cell when the corresponding cell has a greater charge than one or more other cells in the string of cells.

Viking lander spacecraft battery

The Viking Lander was the first spacecraft to fly a sterilized nickel-cadmium battery on a mission to explore the surface of a planet. The significant results of the battery development program from its inception through the design, manufacture, and test of the flight batteries which were flown on the two Lander spacecraft are documented. The flight performance during the early phase of the mission is also presented.

Avalanche Photodiode Statistics in Triggered-Avalanche Detection Mode

The output of a triggered avalanche mode avalanche photodiode is modeled as Poisson distributed primary avalanche events plus conditionally Poisson distributed trapped carrier induced secondary events. The moment generating function as well as the mean and variance of the diode output statistics are derived. The dispersion of the output statistics is shown to always exceed that of the Poisson distribution. Several examples are considered in detail.

Cammatic: an Approach to Improve DSS 13 Antenna Gravity-Loading Performance

Corrective actuator forces are applied to the DSS 13 antenna structure to improve its accuracy. These forces are calibrated according to the antenna elevation requirements. The calibration is derived from accurate field measurements and is not subject to the errors that result from computer modeling. A successful demonstration provided significant antenna surface improvement. An improvement of 0.6 to 1 dB is predicted.

Synthetic battery cycling techniques

Synthetic battery cycling makes use of the fast growing capability of computer graphics to illustrate some of the basic characteristics of operation of individual electrodes within an operating electrochemical cell. It can also simulate the operation of an entire string of cells that are used as the energy storage subsystem of a power system. The group of techniques that as a class have been referred to as Synthetic Battery Cycling is developed in part to try to bridge the gap of understanding that exists between single cell characteristics and battery system behavior.

Technology Demonstrator of an Americium-Fuelled Radioisotope Stirling Generator

Americium-241 is used as the fuel of choice in European Radioisotope Power Systems. The University of Leicester have developed a number of systems using this fuel type, including a 200 Wth heat source. To maximise the electrical output that can be generated from the heat source, the University of Leicester and NASA Glenn Research Center have collaborated on a radioisotope Stirling generator concept, building on the long heritage of dynamic power conversion developments at NASA GRC. Here we present the design of a technology demonstrator of the Americium-fuelled Radioisotope Stirling Generator (Am-RSG).

Astrophysical science with a spaceborne photometric telescope

The FRESIP Project (FRequency of Earth-Sized Inner Planets) is currently under study at NASA Ames Research Center. The goal of FRESIP is the measurement of the frequency of Earth-sized extra-solar planets in inner orbits via the photometric signature of a transit event. This will be accomplished with a spaceborne telescope/photometer capable of photometric precision of two parts in 100,000 at a magnitude of m(sub v) = 12.5. To achieve the maximum scientific value from the FRESIP mission, an astrophysical science workshop was held at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, November 11-12, 1993. Workshop participants were invited as experts in their field of astrophysical research and discussed the astrophysical science that can be achieved within the context of the FRESIP mission.

Pioneer Odyssey

The success of Pioneer 11 in repeating an encounter with the giant planet Jupiter and producing unique images of the north polar regions of the planet necessitated an updating of SP-349. Additional material has been added to the descriptive material about the flight of the spacecraft in Chapter 5. The following chapter, describing the results of the two missions, has been completely updated in the light of further interpretations of the Pioneer 10 data coupled with the new data from Pioneer 11. An additional Chapter 9 has been added to provide a selection of the better images obtained by Pioneer 11. This chapter also includes images of the four Galilean satellites. The bibliography has been updated to include scientific papers published since the original edition.

ELECTRIC PROPULSION- A NEW TECHNOLOGY

Within the past 3 years, electric thrust devices have passed from the first exploratory feasibility experiments to the flight-engineered hardware phase. This rapid surge of development has been punctuated by equally rapid improvements in the performance figures of electrical thrust devices. The most spectacular advances were made in ion engine technology. Total energy expenditure per ion pair has gone from 35,000 ev in 1958 to about 600 ev at the present time leading to power utilization efficiencies of up to 80 per cent, depending upon the specific impulse. The percentage of the particles intercepting the accelerating and focusing electrodes has been reduced from more than 50 per cent in 1958 to less than 0.01 per cent at the present time. Great improvements in ion current per unit area have also been realized, leading to greater thrust "pressures."
