Development of a controllable particle generator for LV seeding in hypersonic wind tunnels

The paper describes the considerations that went into the development of a controllable particle generator for laser velocimeter seeding in a hypersonic wind tunnel operating at 3.45 million N/sq m, 533 K, and stream speed of about 1000 m/sec. Operating conditions determined the choice of a silicone oil as the material, and the requirement that the particle follow the flow within a certain accuracy range put constraints on the allowable particle size range. The principle of the particle generating device chosen was that of the LaMer generator, in which a liquid is first vaporized, mixed with the carrier gas, and then condensed under carefully controlled conditions. Preliminary results of studies on the effect of various apparatus parameters on the particle median diameter are given.

Three-function signal generator

Variable-frequency circuit develops sine square and triangular waveforms. Three-function generator used variable-rate integrator to generate triangular wave and zero-crossing detector to develop square wave. Sine wave generator uses diode matrix to operate on triangular wave, thus with design harmonic distortion in output is less then one percent. By changing values of outboard resistors and capacitors, same design can be used at higher frequencies.

GEMPAK: An arbitrary aircraft geometry generator

A computer program, GEMPAK, has been developed to aid in the generation of detailed configuration geometry. The program was written to allow the user as much flexibility as possible in his choices of configurations and the detail of description desired and at the same time keep input requirements and program turnaround and cost to a minimum. The program consists of routines that generate fuselage and planar-surface (winglike) geometry and a routine that will determine the true intersection of all components with the fuselage. This paper describes the methods by which the various geometries are generated and provides input description with sample input and output. Also included are descriptions of the primary program variables and functions performed by the various routines. The FORTRAN program GEMPAK has been used extensively in conjunction with interfaces to several aerodynamic and plotting computer programs and has proven to be an effective aid in the preliminary design phase of aircraft configurations.

Loran-C digital word generator for use with a KIM-1 microprocessor system

The problem of translating the time of occurrence of received Loran-C pulses into a time, referenced to a particular period of occurrence is addressed and applied to the design of a digital word generator for a Loran-C sensor processor package. The digital information from this word generator is processed in a KIM-1 microprocessor system which is based on the MOS 6502 CPU. This final system will consist of a complete time difference sensor processor for determining position information using Loran-C charts. The system consists of the KIM-1 microprocessor module, a 4K RAM memory board, a user interface, and the Loran-C word generator.

Spontaneous magnetic field generation in hypervelocity impacts

Hypervelocity impacts of meteoroids onto early planetary surfaces may have generated short-lived magnetic fields. The high specific power densities of the impacts, plasma production in the ejecta clouds, and the chemically layered targets of the meteoroids are analyzed in describing the evolution of the magnetic fields. Durations from about one millionth of a minute to one minute, as well as strengths up to 100 tesla, are posited for the impact-generated magnetic fields. The analogy of magnetic-field generation in laser-target experiments is also mentioned. The acquisition of shock remanence and thermoremanence by the ejecta and nearby rock following impact is discussed.

Engineering handbook on the atmospheric environmental guidelines for use in wind turbine generator development

The guidelines are given in the form of design criteria relative to wind speed, wind shear, turbulence, wind direction, ice and snow loading, and other climatological parameters which include rain, hail, thermal effects, abrasive and corrosive effects, and humidity. This report is a presentation of design criteria in an engineering format which can be directly input to wind turbine generator design computations. Guidelines are also provided for developing specialized wind turbine generators or for designing wind turbine generators which are to be used in a special region of the United States.

Application of a numerical orthogonal coordinate generator to axisymmetric blunt bodies

An application of a simple numerical technique which allows for the rapid construction of orthogonal coordinate systems about axisymmetric blunt bodies is presented. This technique can generate orthogonal meshes which have unequally spaced points in two directions. Relations are given for the numerical generation of the metric coefficients. Body shapes ranging from simple analytical bodies to complex reverse curvature bodies are presented together with their orthogonal coordinate systems. The relatively good accuracy of the technique is shown in tabular data describing coordinate line slopes and metric coefficients. The predictor-corrector numerical method used to generate these results is both simple in concept and easy to program, so that the application of the technique should be broader than the results presented.

A versatile burst generator for LDV

A laser-Doppler velocimeter (LDV) burst generator developed for calibration of an LDV before an actual test is described. This generator uses voltage-controlled oscillators to produce the information frequency up to 1 MHz and the pedestal frequency up to 10 MHz. The amplitude and the frequency of each signal can be adjusted independently, and the generator is capable of producing a single burst or a variety of periodic and aperiodic bursts. Variable symmetry in the burst signal can be introduced to the point of producing the 'double-pulse' burst. An LED display is used for the readout of the information and the pedestal frequencies.

Supplementary steam - A viable hydrogen power generation concept

Technical and economic aspects of a supplementary steam generation for peaking power applications are discussed. Preliminary designs of the hydrogen/oxygen combustors to be used for such applications are described. The integration of the hydrogen/oxygen steam-generating equipment into a typical coal-fired steam station is studied. The basic steam generation system was designed as a 20 MW supplementary system to be added to the existing 160 MW system. An analysis of the operating and design requirements of the supplementary system is conducted. Estimates were made for additional steam and fuel supply lines and for additional control required to operate the combustors and to integrate the combustor system into the facility.

Spherical harmonic analysis of a synoptic climatology generated with a global general circulation model

Spherical harmonic analysis was used to analyze the observed climatological (C) fields of temperature at 850 mb, geopotential height at 500 mb, and sea level pressure. The spherical harmonic method was also applied to the corresponding "model climatological" fields (M) generated by a general circulation model, the "GISS climate model." The climate model was initialized with observed data for the first of December 1976 at 00. GMT and allowed to generate five years of meteorological history. Monthly means of the above fields for the five years were computed and subjected to spherical harmonic analysis. It was found from the comparison of the spectral components of both sets, M and C, that the climate model generated reasonable 500 mb geopotential heights. The model temperature field at 850 mb exhibited a generally correct structure. However, the meridional temperature gradient was overestimated and overheating of the continents was observed in summer.

Pilot assessment of two computer-generated display formats for helicopter instrument approach

Two computer generated display formats were evaluated as primary displays by six research pilots in a fixed base simulator. One of the computer generated display formats was an electronic attitude director indicator (EADI) which featured three cue flight director, command information, superimposed on true perspective runway symbology. The other computer generated display format featured separate horizontal and vertical situation information with vector predictors. A baseline display, consisting of an electromechanical attitude director indicator (ADI) with a three cue flight director and a moving map, was used as a reference for the pilot evaluations.

Eigenvector analysis of some observed and model-generated Climatological fields

An empirical orthogonal function analysis of monthly mean synoptic fields computed with a general circulation model and the corresponding observed climatological patterns is presented. A computer program was used to compute the principal components of the data matrices representing global maps of various observed and model-generated climatological fields. The variables analyzed were: 500mb geopotential height, 850 mb temperature, and sea level pressure. It is concluded that eigenvector analysis of observed and model-generated synoptic climatological fields is a useful diagnostic aid in the evaluation of global model simulation. The maps of any climatological variables are readily decomposed into a few orthogonal components which account for a large fraction of the total spatial variance, and the observed and model-generated patterns may then be compared in terms of these principal components of the original data matrices.

Generation and injection of e.m. waves in space plasma by means of a long orbiting tether

The generation and injection of electromagnetic waves in space plasma by means of a long orbiting tether are considered. The objectives include an estimation of the portions of the primary electrodynamic power developed by the tether that goes to excite each of various wave generation and injection mechanisms expected to be present during a tether's orbital flight, an evaluation of the signal levels associated with each one of the mechanisms above, and verification of their detectability with state-of-the-art instrumentation on the Earth surface or elsewhere. The generation and injection of Alfven waves and electron whistler waves were identified as the most relevant mechanisms activited by the electrodynamic tether. The physical mechanisms that govern these two families of phenomena were investigated and the ratio between the power that goes in Alfven waves and in whistlers was derived. The analysis of the possible production of accelerated electrons by the electrodynamic tether was initiated.

Electric energy production by particle thermionic-thermoelectric power generators

Thermionic-thermoelectric power generators, composed of a thin layer of porous, low work function material separating a heated emitter electrode and a cooler collector electrode, have extremely large Seebeck coefficients of over 2 mV/K and can provide significant output power. Preliminary experiments with 20-micron thick (Ba Sr Ca)O coatings, limited by evaporative loss to temperatures below 1400 K, have yielded short circuit current densities of 500 mA/sq cm and power densities of 60 mW/ sq cm. Substantially more output is expected with cesium-coated refractory oxide particle coatings operating at higher temperatures. Practical generators will have thermal-to-electrical efficiencies of 10 to 20%. Further increases can be gained by cascading these high-temperature devices with lower temperature conventional thermoelectric generators.

An electrostatic analog for generating cascade grids

Accurate and efficient numerical simulation of flows through turbomachinery blade rows depends on the topology of the computational grids. These grids must reflect the periodic nature of turbomachinery blade row geometries and conform to the blade shapes. Three types of grids can be generated that meet these minimal requirements: through-flow grids, O-type grids, and C-type grids. A procedure which can be used to generate all three types of grids is presented. The resulting grids are orthogonal and can be stretched to capture the essential physics of the flow. A discussion is also presented detailing the extension of the generation procedure to three dimensional geometries.
