Pavilion 2 Feature Additions [Slides]

Pavilion 2 is a critical component of system testing for LANL HPC systems. Pavilion 2 is system independent, which allows for the creation of a large suite of generalized tests than can be applied to multiple systems. These additions to Pavilion 2 improve our ability to test systems and diagnose issues. With such a large suite, running the proper tests when diagnosing and fixing a system can be difficult, as well as locating old tests for reference. Test configurations may contain several permutations of a test, not all of which may apply to a given system. The ability to run sets of test permutations lets the tester focus on specific parts of the test without having to edit the test configurations or run extraneous tests. The addition of the filter argument improves the ability to find test results based on test attributes, including past tests. Pavilion 2's system independence is largely based on various layers of configuration files. Configuration files for the host, test, and modes exist to allow generalized testing. The operating system configuration layer can provide helpful OS defaults to a test. Survey, a collection and reporting tool, can help us gauge the performance of a system as well as diagnose issues. The addition of a Survey mode in Pavilion 2 makes running tests with Survey very straightforward. The Survey results are combined with Pavilion 2's test results to make it easy to access.

NSTX-U – A national User Facility to close the key fusion gaps

This presentation lays out how the NSTX-U Research Program will help close the science and technology gaps for moving towards a Fusion Pilot Plant (FPP) and how this work is aligned with the Bold Decadal Vision. The science gap focuses on determining whether the good confinement trends in Spherical Tokamaks extends to lower collisionalities that are comparable to those expected in FPPs. The technology gap is one of mitigating the power exhaust in FPPs, and NSTX-U is uniquely positioned to test Liquid Metal components in the highest heat flux environment of any existing tokamak, spherical or otherwise.

Cryogenic Optical and Spin Scanning Probe Station for High-throughput Characterization of Solid-state Quantum Defects

This final technical report provides an overview of the key milestones achieved by Advanced Research Systems (ARS), a DOE SBIR/STTR Grant Recipient. ARS’s main objective was to develop a prototype of the Closed Cycle Cryogenic Quantum Probe Station (Avalanche). Designed for near field spectroscopy (Tip Enhanced Photoluminescence, TEPL and Tip Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy TERS) and far field spectroscopy (micro-Raman, micro-PL) is in the final stage of completion. The critical components have been tested and the final System Test of the AFM is scheduled for August 2025.

The Mu2e Calorimeter

The EM CsI crystals and SiPM readout calorimeter of the Mu2e experiment is fully assembled, with all components completed and tested; the mechanical structure is fully built, with a complete integration and test of all the analog sensors and electronics. The digital electronics is being produced and installed. We summarise the Calorimeter characteristics and the assembly status, as well as the move, installation and commissioning plans of the final disks in the Mu2e hall.

Measurements of the Hubble Constant with a Two-rung Distance Ladder: Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad

Abstract The three-rung distance ladder, which calibrates Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) through stellar distances linked to geometric measurements, provides the highest precision direct measurement of the Hubble constant. In light of the Hubble tension, it is important to test the individual components of the distance ladder. For this purpose, we report a measurement of the Hubble constant from 35 extragalactic Cepheid hosts measured by the SH0ES team, using their distances and redshifts at cz ≤ 3300 km s −1 , instead of any more distant SNe Ia, to measure the Hubble flow. The Cepheid distances are calibrated geometrically in the Milky Way, NGC 4258, and the Large Magellanic Cloud. Peculiar velocities are a significant source of systematic uncertainty at z ∼ 0.01, and we present a formalism for both mitigating and quantifying their effects, making use of external reconstructions of the density and velocity fields in the nearby universe. We identify a significant source of uncertainty originating from different assumptions about the selection criteria of this sample, whether distance or redshift limited, as it was assembled over three decades. Modeling these assumptions yields central values ranging from H 0 = 71.7 to 76.4 km s −1 Mpc −1 . Combining the four best-fitting selection models yields H 0 = 72.9 − 2.2 + 2.4 as a fiducial result, at 2.4 σ tension with Planck. While SNe Ia are essential for a precise measurement of H 0 , unknown systematics in these supernovae are unlikely to be the source of the Hubble tension.

Resistance heating releases structural adhesive

Composite adhesive package bonds components together for testing and enables separation when testing is completed. The composite of adhesives, insulation and a heating element separate easily when an electrical current is applied.

Vibration damping composition has flush-away feature

Vibration damping compound nullifies resonant frequencies in structures that support critical components undergoing vibration testing. The main feature of this damping composition is the ability to remove it with a flush of plain tap water.

Atmospheric composition affects heat- and mass-transfer processes

For environmental control system functions sensitive to atmospheric composition, components are test-operated in helium-oxygen and nitrogen-oxygen mixtures, pure oxygen, and air. Transient heat- and mass-transfer tests are conducted for carbon dioxide adsorption on molecular sieve and for water vapor adsorption on silica gel.
