Switchbox for welding torches

Switchbox can be used to change from one welding torch setup to another without stopping production line. Simple flip of switch connects gas, water, and power to selected torch. In conventional systems, production must be stopped so that maintenance people can disconnect and reconnect another torch.

Totally confined explosive welding

The undesirable by-products of explosive welding are confined and the association noise is reduced by the use of a simple enclosure into which the explosive is placed and in which the explosion occurs. An infrangible enclosure is removably attached to one of the members to be bonded at the point directly opposite the bond area. An explosive is completely confined within the enclosure at a point in close proximity to the member to be bonded and a detonating means is attached to the explosive. The balance of the enclosure, not occupied by explosive, is filled with a shaped material which directs the explosive pressure toward the bond area. A detonator adaptor controls the expansion of the enclosure by the explosive force so that the enclosure at no point experiences a discontinuity in expansion which causes rupture. The use of the technique is practical in the restricted area of a space station.

Etchant for incoloy-903 welds

Special reagent consists of 1 part 90% lactic acid, 1 part 70% nitric acid, and 4 part, 37% hydrochloric acid. Solution etches parent and weld metals at same rate, without overetching. Underlying grain structure of both metals is revealed.

Sleeve puller salvages welded tubes

Tool removes sleeve remnants without distorting or damaging tubes, unlike pliers and other conventional handtools. Tubes can be reused, saving time, labor, and material in many applications. Sleeve-removal fixture consists of pressure screw, swing arm, locking screws, and base. It removes sleeve remnant from tubing after welded joint has been sawed through.

Honing fixture for welded electrodes

Fixture for refacing electrodes mounts directly on welding machine. Up-and-down movement of stone against electrode is done manually or with designed motor drive. Fixture is used in lieu of manually refinishing electrodes with emory paper or other abrasive. It produces uniformly flat, parallel electrodes in less time, saving cost on production time.

Reshaping tube ends for welding

Tube ends are rounded in preparation for welding by new semiautomatic tool. Tubes that have been trimmed close to bend may be deformed by process. To restore roundness, out-of-round tube is opened, plug inserted, and crimper compresses tube into proper shape around plug.

Space fabrication: Graphite composite truss welding and cap forming subsystems

An automated beam builder for the fabrication of space structures is described. The beam builder forms a triangular truss 1.3 meters on a side. Flat strips of preconsolidated graphite fiber fabric in a polysulfone matrix are coiled in a storage canister. Heaters raise the material to forming temperature then the structural cap section is formed by a series of rollers. After cooling, cross members and diagonal tension cords are ultrasonically welded in place to complete the truss. The stability of fabricated structures and composite materials is also examined.

Contamination Control During Weld Repairs

Using internal pressure, weld defects in pipes or tanks are repaired without contaminating interiors that cannot be protected or recleaned. Procedure can be used with pipes or tubing that is attached to components with critical internal clearances. Method has also been successfully used to cut completely through a pipe with a handsaw.

Graphite composite truss welding and cap section forming subsystems. Volume 2: Program results

The technology required to develop a beam builder which automatically fabricates long, continuous, lightweight, triangular truss members in space from graphite/thermoplastics composite materials is described. Objectives are: (1) continue the development of forming and welding methods for graphite/thermoplastic (GR/TP) composite material; (2) continue GR/TP materials technology development; and (3) fabricate and structurally test a lightweight truss segment.

Material Protection During Electron-Beam Welding

Alumina pellets behind electron-beam weld joint protect other parts of assembly from beam and from spattered material. Alumina pellets may be cleaned and reused. Easily applied and removed in regions that are narrow or have complex shapes.

Electrical Conduit Distributes Weld Gas Evenly

Purge-gas distributor, made from flexible electrical conduit by drilling small holes along its length, provides even gas flow for welding. Flexible conduit adjusts to accomodate almost any shape and is used for gas coverage in other applications that previously needed formed and drilled solid tubing.

Microfissuring in Alloys During Welding

Evaluating cause of intergranular cracking (microfissuring) in high-temperature alloys during welding done by measuring number of microcracks as function of temperature and plastic strain. Two mechanisms of microfissuring in heat-affected zones suggested.

Lightweight solar array blanket tooling, laser welding and cover process technology

A two phase technology investigation was performed to demonstrate effective methods for integrating 50 micrometer thin solar cells into ultralightweight module designs. During the first phase, innovative tooling was developed which allows lightweight blankets to be fabricated in a manufacturing environment with acceptable yields. During the second phase, the tooling was improved and the feasibility of laser processing of lightweight arrays was confirmed. The development of the cell/interconnect registration tool and interconnect bonding by laser welding is described.

Practical small-scale explosive seam welding

Joining principles and variables, types of joints, capabilities, and current and potential applications are described for an explosive seam welding process developed at NASA Langley Research Center. Variable small quantities of RDX explosive in a ribbon configuration are used to create narrow (less than 0.5 inch), long length, uniform, hermetrically sealed joints that exhibit parent metal properties in a wide variety of metals, alloys, and combinations. The first major all application of the process is the repair of four nuclear reactors in Canada. Potential applications include pipelines, sealing of vessels, and assembly of large space structures.
