Apollo contamination analysis

The Apollo 12 photographic observations of clouds produced by venting liquids into space were reduced and analyzed. The number of Baker-Nunn photographs required that film measurement and data processing be automated, and the microdensitometer was adapted to automatic digital operation. Computer programs were prepared to process the image-density measurements. A substantial selection of Apollo 12 data was processed; both hydrogen and oxygen clouds are represented. Some limited data were obtained from Apollo 13 and 14 missions. During the Apollo 12 data analysis, the theory and models of cloud phenomena were refined because the models were initially applied to inferior oxygen data from earlier missions. The reported observations of water dumps from Apollo 12 are also discussed, along with the use of the oxygen and hydrogen data from Apollo 12 photographs with the cloud models.

Computation of Earth Science Products on Spaceborne Platforms

Spaceborne sensors like NASA's Hyperion hyperspectral imager generate huge data volumes, and several near-term trends indicate that data volumes will only increase. Next-generation hyperspectral missions, such as NASA's Hyperspectral Infrared Imager (HyspIRI), will operate at higher duty cycles and higher data rates, and their users will expect products to be generated from the data in near real time [1]. Barring a sudden advance in satellite downlink capacity, these trends point to a need to process data and generate products onboard the spacecraft. Rather than downlink an entire hyperspectral image cube, onboard processing enables satellites to downlink partial or completed scientific data products, which are often one to two orders of magnitude smaller than the original image. In addition, a satellite with onboard data processing resources and direct broadcast transmission equipment could send data products directly to first responders, research scientists or other users on the ground. Next-generation space-capable data processors will have a combination of reconfigurable gate arrays, digital signal processors and general-purpose CPUs. Correctly programmed and configured, these resources are sufficient to run sophisticated data analysis programs, including hyperspectral image processing algorithms that commonly run on desktop computers [2]. This paper describes how we implemented one such program, the HSEG hierarchical image segmentation algorithm, software commonly used on desktop and parallel processors, on a hardware platform designed to mimic a next-generation space-capable data processor [3]. We also describe our approach to porting the algorithm to and optimizing it for the new platform, and determine the expected performance gains enabled by our design. This extended abstract will describe the HSEG algorithm and hardware platform in greater detail, provide an analysis of the key function within the algorithm that required hardware acceleration, and describe our implementation of that function in hardware.

CFD Extraction Tool for TecPlot From DPLR Solutions

This invention is a TecPlot macro of a computer program in the TecPlot programming language that processes data from DPLR solutions in TecPlot format. DPLR (Data-Parallel Line Relaxation) is a NASA computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, and TecPlot is a commercial CFD post-processing tool. The Tec- Plot data is in SI units (same as DPLR output). The invention converts the SI units into British units. The macro modifies the TecPlot data with unit conversions, and adds some extra calculations. After unit conversions, the macro cuts a slice, and adds vectors on the current plot for output format. The macro can also process surface solutions. Existing solutions use manual conversion and superposition. The conversion is complicated because it must be applied to a range of inter-related scalars and vectors to describe a 2D or 3D flow field. It processes the CFD solution to create superposition/comparison of scalars and vectors. The existing manual solution is cumbersome, open to errors, slow, and cannot be inserted into an automated process. This invention is quick and easy to use, and can be inserted into an automated data-processing algorithm.

Toward CO 2 Multimeasurement Geophysical Monitoring in the North Dakota CarbonSAFE Project

Paper presented at 16th International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies (GHGT-16), October 23–27, 2022, Lyon, France. Overcoming data acquisition challenges associated with a lake in the study area, electrical infrastructure around the plant, noise from mine activities, complex near-surface conditions associated with reclaimed mine land, high wind speed, and extremely cold temperatures, data processing, modeling, and inversion of the baseline geophysical data demonstrated the importance of high-quality data for a CO 2 geophysical monitoring program. Implementing more advanced data acquisition and processing techniques in future monitoring surveys can further improve confidence in interpretations of geophysical survey data.

Processing techniques for software based SAR processors

Software SAR processing techniques defined to treat Shuttle Imaging Radar-B (SIR-B) data are reviewed. The algorithms are devised for the data processing procedure selection, SAR correlation function implementation, multiple array processors utilization, cornerturning, variable reference length azimuth processing, and range migration handling. The Interim Digital Processor (IDP) originally implemented for handling Seasat SAR data has been adapted for the SIR-B, and offers a resolution of 100 km using a processing procedure based on the Fast Fourier Transformation fast correlation approach. Peculiarities of the Seasat SAR data processing requirements are reviewed, along with modifications introduced for the SIR-B. An Advanced Digital SAR Processor (ADSP) is under development for use with the SIR-B in the 1986 time frame as an upgrade for the IDP, which will be in service in 1984-5.

Methods and algorithms for computer synthesis of holographic elements to obtain a complex impulse response of optical information processing systems based on modern spatial light modulators

The possibilities of designing optical devices for data processing and imaging based on the manipulation of coherent light beams by means of spatial light modulators (SLMs) are investigated. A review of commercially available SLMs is presented and the limitations of their complex modulation characteristics are analysed. The main problem of using present-day SLMs is the lack of the ability to modulate directly all states within a unit circle in the complex plane. In this regard, the characteristics of current methods for the synthesis of holographic elements are described that implement a given complex impulse response of the optical system and are optimal for using SLMs with purely amplitude, purely phase, and hybrid amplitude – phase modulation. Myna: Connecting powder bed fusion build data to simulation tools for digital twin applications

Additive manufacturing (AM), as a digital process, can generate a detailed digital thread linking a part’s design and manufacturing to its operational performance. As AM systems advance, an increasing amount of process data is stored in manufacturing databases. In principle, this data can be utilized by simulation-based digital twin approaches, such as real-time process control and asynchronous post-processing guidance. However, few tools currently exist for systematically integrating digital thread data with computational tools. Here, in this study, we propose a software package, called Myna, for connecting data from powder bed fusion processes to simulation tools. The utility of such a platform is demonstrated using build data from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Manufacturing Demonstration Facility “Peregrine v2023-10” public dataset to automatically configure and run 54 semi-analytical 3DThesis melt pool simulations, 78 numerical Additive FOAM melt pool simulations, and 3 ExaCA microstructure simulations. The simulated, spatially registered microstructures are then compared directly with electron backscatter diffraction characterization of the corresponding as-built part locations. The resulting simulated microstructure showed variation as a function of process parameters, particularly stripe width; however, the experimental data had little variation between the microstructure texture and grain size resulting from different processing conditions. Analysis of the discrepancies suggest that it is possible a two-phase ferritic-austenitic solidification model is needed to accurately predict grain size and texture for certain stainless steel 316L feedstock compositions under powder bed fusion conditions, providing direction for future research. As illustrated here, due to the number and complexity of the simulations involved in AM process-structure–property predictions, automated methods to connect process data and simulations will remain necessary tools for testing hypotheses and implementing digital twin applications.

The R -process Alliance: Fifth Data Release from the Search for R -process-enhanced Metal-poor Stars in the Galactic Halo with the GTC

Understanding the abundance pattern of metal-poor stars and the production of heavy elements through various nucleosynthesis processes offers crucial insights into the chemical evolution of the Milky Way, revealing primary sites and major sources of rapid neutron-capture process (r-process) material in the Universe. In this fifth data release from the R-Process Alliance (RPA), we present the detailed chemical abundances of 41 faint (down to V = 15.8) and extremely metal-poor (down to [Fe/H] = -3.3) halo stars selected from the RPA. We obtained high-resolution spectra for these objects with the HORuS spectrograph on the Gran Telescopio Canarias. We measure the abundances of light, α, Fe-peak, and neutron-capture elements. We report the discovery of five carbon-enhanced metal-poor, one limited-r, three r-I, and four r-II stars, and six Mg-poor stars. We also identify one star of a possible globular cluster origin at an extremely low metallicity at [Fe/H] = -3.0. This adds to the growing evidence of a lower-limit metallicity floor for globular cluster abundances. We use the abundances of Fe-peak elements and the α-elements to investigate the contributions from different nucleosynthesis channels in the progenitor supernovae. We find the distribution of [Mg/Eu] as a function of [Fe/H] to have different enrichment levels, indicating different possible pathways and sites of their production. We also reveal differences in the trends of the neutron-capture element abundances of Sr, Ba, and Eu of various r-I and r-II stars from the RPA data releases, which provide constraints on their nucleosynthesis sites and subsequent evolution.
