Experimental evaluation of the stabilization of the COT orbitals by 4f orbitals in COT 2 Ce using a Hubbard model

Significant orbital mixing is rare in lanthanide complexes because of the limited radial extent of the 4f orbitals, which results in a generally small stabilization due to 4f orbital interactions. Nevertheless, even a small amount of additional stabilization could enhance lanthanide separations. One lanthanide complex in which orbital mixing has been extensively studied both experimentally and computationally is cerocene, COT 2 Ce, where COT is cyclooctatetraene. This compound has a singlet ground state with a low-lying, triplet excited state. Previous fluorescence studies on trimethylsilyl-substituted cerocenes indicate the triplet state is 0.4 eV higher in energy than the singlet state. In addition, computational studies predict that the triplet is 0.3 to 1 eV higher in energy than the singlet. The synthesis of highly pure COT 2 Ce by Walter and Andersen allowed its physical properties to be accurately measured. Using these measurements, we evaluate the stabilization of the 4f orbitals using two, independent approaches. A Hubbard model is used to evaluate the stabilization of the ground state due to orbital mixing. This stabilization, which is also the singlet–triplet gap, is –0.29 eV using this model. Furthermore, this gap was also from the temperature independent paramagnetism of COT 2 Ce, which yielded a value of –0.32 eV.

Evaluation of COTS Electronics by Power Spectrum Analysis and Multivariate Data Analysis

Power spectrum analysis (PSA) is a fast, non-destructive, sensitive method for examining commercial off-the-shelf ( COTS ) electronic components. These features make PSA attractive for both component screening and surveillance in support of component reliability efforts. Current analysis methods limit the utility of PSA due to the need to manually examine the results of analysis to identify anomalous parts. This study demonstrates the development and application of a workflow to automate the screening of COTS electronic components. Further, this study demonstrates the use of multivariate algorithms to assess aging of Zener diodes. These workflows can be readily extended to other components, combining the benefits of PSA and multivariate analysis to screen and evaluate COTS electronic components.

Robust COTS objective for diffraction-limited, high-NA, long front working distance imaging

We present a robust objective lens optimized for applications requiring both high numerical aperture (NA) and long front working distance imaging, comprised of all commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) spherical singlet lenses. Unlike traditional designs that require separate collimation and refocusing stages, our approach directly converges imaged light to the back focal plane using a single lens group. Our configuration corrects spherical aberrations and efficiently collects light to achieve diffraction-limited performance across a wide range of wavelengths while simplifying alignment and assembly. Using this approach, we design and construct an example objective lens that features a long front working distance of 61 mm and a clipped NA of 0.30 (limited by an aperture in our experimental setup). We experimentally verify that it achieves monochromatic diffraction-limited resolution at wavelengths from 375 nm to 866 nm without requiring replacement of the lenses or changing the inter-lens spacings, and its performance remains robust across a 46 mm range variation in total length (by adjusting mainly the back working distance). Additionally, we develop a quantitative method to measure the field of view (FOV) using an experimentally calibrated pinhole target. Under 397 nm illumination (i.e., from 40 Ca + ion fluorescence), the objective achieves a resolution of 0.87 μm with a 540 μm FOV. This robust, all-COTS, and versatile design is well-suited for a broad range of experiments, supporting high-precision measurements and exploring quantum phenomena.

Numerical and Analytical Modeling of the Effect of Cracks on the Self-Inductance of a COTS YJ-41003-TC Toroid

COTS inductors and transformers often contain partial cracks whose effect on inductance, a key performance parameter, have not been carefully studied. In this report, the effects of both partial and complete cracks on the self-inductance of a 100 turn square cross section COTS YJ-41003-TC toroid comprised of J Material was comprehensively investigated using both analytically derived closed form expressions and 3D computational techniques employing commercial codes. Both partial (half-penny) and complete (air gap) cracks of 10 and 25 μm were investigated. The crack is defined as the physical distance between two faces of the toroid's magnetic core, such that the surface normal of either face is along the Φ-direction, in alignment with the B-field. For the purposes of validation, two different approaches were incorporated for both the analytical and numerical models. The two analytical methods are comprised of a first principles approach based on the physics of electromagnetics, as well as linear circuit theory. The former directly utilizes the integral form of Maxwell's equations while the latter exploits the interchangeable relationship between electric and magnetic circuits. Validation within the computational scheme is realized through a code-to-code comparison between commercial solvers, COMSOL Multiphysics and CST, with the former employing the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the latter the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) technique. Sound agreement between all four methods (ie., two analytical and two numerical) is observed, with results indicating that only a perturbation in self-inductance occurs for the half-penny cracks, while a substantial reduction takes place for the case of complete cracks. It is important to note that even though a static μ r is applied, representing the linear region of the BH curve (based on manufacturer specifications), the complete crack results still place a lower conservative bound on the inductance. This follows from the fact that even in the case of a half-penny crack, if the magnetic core portion of the crack approaches saturation, the crack begins to behave like an air gap, or complete crack. When an air gap is introduced into a magnetic core, a substantial reduction in inductance can occur due to the significant difference in permeabilities between the two mediums (ie., μ core >> μ air ). The once intact bulk magnetic core of the toroid essentially begins to behave like an air core.

Expression and characterization of spore coat Cot$\mathrm{H}$ kinases from the cellulosomes of anaerobic fungi ( Neocallimastigomycetes )

Anaerobic fungi (Neocallimastigomycetes) found in the guts of herbivores are biomass deconstruction specialists with a remarkable ability to extract sugars from recalcitrant plant material. Anaerobic fungi, as well as many species of anaerobic bacteria, deploy multi-enzyme complexes called cellulosomes, which modularly tether together hydrolytic enzymes, to accelerate biomass hydrolysis. While the majority of genomically encoded cellulosomal genes in Neocallimastigomycetes are biomass degrading enzymes, the second largest family of cellulosomal genes encode spore coat CotH domains, whose contribution to fungal cellulosome and/or cellular function is unknown. Structural bioinformatics of CotH proteins from the anaerobic fungus Piromyces finnis shows anaerobic fungal CotH domains conserve key ATP and Mg 2+ binding motifs from bacterial Bacillus CotH proteins known to act as protein kinases. Experimental characterization further demonstrates ATP hydrolysis activity in the presence and absence of substrate from two cellulosomal P. finnis CotH proteins when recombinantly produced in E. coli. These results present foundational evidence for CotH activity in anaerobic fungi and provide a path towards elucidating the functional contribution of this protein family to fungal cellulosome assembly and activity.

Survey Report on Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Tracking Tools

Radioactive/nuclear (R/N) materials are integral parts of many business sectors such as medicine, industry, and research. In the United States alone, approximately 3 million packages containing R/N materials are shipped annually via highways, rail, air, and water. These materials are utilized in medical diagnostics and treatments, industrial radiography, and scientific research. The secure and efficient transportation of R/N materials is paramount to public safety and national security. Recent incidents involving the loss of R/N materials during transportation highlight significant security and safety concerns. For instance, in December 2024, a package containing four encapsulated Selenium-75 sources was reported lost in transit from the Czech Republic to Madrid, raising alarms about the security of such shipments. Similarly, a Germanium-68 pin source was reported lost in transit in New Jersey in December 2024, underscoring the risks associated with transporting radioactive materials.

Automated platform to assess commercial off the shelf (COTS) software assurance

A computer-implemented method of verifying software is provided. The method comprises creating a number of virtual machines that simulate computing environments and running a number of software program on the virtual machines. The software programs have full access to the simulated computing environments, but the source code of the software program is unavailable. A hypervisor performs virtual machine introspection as the software programs run on the virtual machines, wherein the virtual machines and software programs are unaware the virtual machine introspection is being performed. Telemetry data is collected about the software programs, including any identified threats posed by the software programs to the simulated computing environments, and presented to a user via an interface.

Trends in actinide electronic structure revealed from asymmetric, isostructural transuranic metallocenes

The study of actinide electronic structure and bonding within rigorously controlled environments is fundamental to advancing nuclear applications. Here, we report a new set of isostructural actinide organometallics; An(COT big ) 2 , (An = Th, U, Np, and Pu), where COT big is the bulky 1,4-bis(triphenylsilyl)-substituted cyclooctatetraenyl dianion (1,4-(Ph 3 Si) 2 C 8 H 6 ) 2 -. The actinide(IV) metallocene sandwiches have a clam-shell structure, offering a new molecular symmetry to explore f-orbital contributions in bonding. Combined experimental and computational studies reveal that An(COT big ) 2 complexes strongly differ from the previously published coplanar An(COT) 2 sandwiches due to the bent geometry and electron-withdrawing nature of the substituents. While COT big displays comparatively weaker electron donation, the low-energy f-f transitions in An(COT big ) 2 have increased molar absorptivity consistent with the removal of the parity selection rule and better energetic matching between ligand and actinide 5f orbitals as the series is traversed. For Pu(COT big ) 2 , covalent mixing of donor 5f metal orbitals and the ligand-π orbitals is especially strong.
