Anisotropic 2D van der Waals Magnets Hosting 1D Spin Chains

Abstract The exploration of 1D magnetism, frequently portrayed as spin chains, constitutes an actively pursued research field that illuminates fundamental principles in many‐body problems and applications in magnonics and spintronics. The inherent reduction in dimensionality often leads to robust spin fluctuations, impacting magnetic ordering and resulting in novel magnetic phenomena. Here, structural, magnetic, and optical properties of highly anisotropic 2D van der Waals antiferromagnets that uniquely host spin chains are explored. First‐principle calculations reveal that the weakest interaction is interchain, leading to essentially 1D magnetic behavior in each layer. With the additional degree of freedom arising from its anisotropic structure, the structure is engineered by alloying, varying the 1D spin chain lengths using electron beam irradiation, or twisting for localized patterning, and spin textures are calculated, predicting robust stability of the antiferromagnetic ordering. Comparing with other spin chain magnets, these materials are anticipated to bring fresh perspectives on harvesting low‐dimensional magnetism.

Structure and magnetic properties of Ba 9 ⁢V 3 ⁢Te 15 with ferromagnetic spin chains

Here we report a ferromagnetic compound Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 with quasi-one-dimensional (1D) spin chains. It was synthesized at high-temperature and high-pressure conditions and systematically investigated via structural, transport, magnetic and heat capacity measurements. Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 mainly consists of trimerized face-sharing V⁢Te6 octahedral chains running along the 𝑐 axis, which are separated by a distance of 10.184⁢(8)⁢Å, thus demonstrating a strong 1D structural character. Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 is a semiconductor with a band gap ∼128meV and undergoes a ferromagnetic transition with 𝑇C∼3.6K. Far above 𝑇C, the short-range spin orders due to the intrachain spin coupling have developed, which leads to a negative magnetoresistance effect, the deviation of magnetic susceptibility from the Curie-Weiss law and 𝑇1/2 dependence of magnetic heat capacity. Our results reveal that Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 provides a good opportunity to study the intrinsic properties of a system with quasi-1D ferromagnetic spin chains.

Perfect quantum state transfer on diamond fractal graphs

In the quest for designing novel protocols for quantum information and quantum computation, an important goal is to achieve perfect quantum state transfer for systems beyond the well-known one- dimensional cases, such as 1D spin chains. Here, we use methods from fractal analysis and probability to find a new class of quantum spin chains on fractal-like graphs (known as diamond fractals) which support perfect quantum state transfer and which have a wide range of different Hausdorff and spectral dimensions. The resulting systems are spin networks combining Dyson hierarchical model structure with transverse permutation symmetries of varying order.

Deconstructing magnetization noise: Degeneracies, phases, and mobile fractionalized excitations in tetris artificial spin ice

Direct detection of spontaneous spin fluctuations, or “magnetization noise,” is emerging as a powerful means of revealing and studying magnetic excitations in both natural and artificial frustrated magnets. Depending on the lattice and nature of the frustration, these excitations can often be described as fractionalized quasiparticles possessing an effective magnetic charge. Here, by combining ultrasensitive optical detection of thermodynamic magnetization noise with Monte Carlo simulations, we reveal emergent regimes of magnetic excitations in artificial “tetris ice.” A marked increase of the intrinsic noise at certain applied magnetic fields heralds the spontaneous proliferation of fractionalized excitations, which can diffuse independently, without cost in energy, along specific quasi-1D spin chains in the tetris ice lattice.

Quantum magnetism on small-world networks

While classical spin systems in random networks have been intensively studied, much less is known about quantum magnets in random graphs. In this work, we investigate interacting quantum spins on small-world networks, building on mean-field theory and extensive quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Starting from one-dimensional (1D) rings, we consider two situations: All-to-all interacting and long-range interactions randomly added. The effective infinite dimension of the lattice leads to a magnetic ordering at finite temperature Tc with mean-field criticality. Nevertheless, in contrast to the classical case, we find two distinct power-law behaviors for Tc versus the average strength of the extra couplings. This is controlled by a competition between a characteristic length scale of the random graph and the thermal correlation length of the underlying 1D system, thus challenging mean-field theories. We also investigate the fate of a gapped 1D spin chain against the small-world effect.

Real-Time Operator Evolution in Two and Three Dimensions via Sparse Pauli Dynamics

We study real-time operator evolution using sparse Pauli dynamics, a recently developed method for simulating expectation values of quantum circuits. On the examples of energy and charge diffusion in one-dimensional (1D) spin chains and sudden quench dynamics in the 2D transverse-field Ising model, it is shown that this approach can compete with state-of-the-art tensor network methods. We further demonstrate the flexibility of the approach by studying quench dynamics in the 3D transverse-field Ising model that is highly challenging for tensor network methods. For the simulation of expectation value dynamics starting in a computational basis state, we introduce an extension of sparse Pauli dynamics that truncates the growing sum of Pauli operators by discarding terms with a large number of X and Y matrices. This is validated by our 2D and 3D simulations. Finally, we argue that sparse Pauli dynamics is not only capable of converging challenging observables to high accuracy, but can also serve as a reliable approximate approach even when given only limited computational resources. Quantum time dynamics employing the Yang-Baxter equation for circuit compression

Quantum time dynamics (QTD) is considered a promising problem for quantum supremacy on near-term quantum computers. However, QTD quantum circuits grow with increasing time simulations. This study focuses on simulating the time dynamics of one-dimensional (1D) integrable spin chains with nearest-neighbor interactions. We have proved the existence of a reflection symmetry in the quantum circuit employed for simulating the time evolution of certain classes of 1D Heisenberg model Hamiltonians by virtue of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, and how this symmetry can be exploited to compress and produce a shallow quantum circuit. With this compression scheme, the depth of the quantum circuit becomes independent of step size and only depends on the number of spins. We show that the depth of the compressed circuit is rigorously a linear function of the system size for the studied Heisenberg model Hamiltonians in the present work. As a consequence, the number of CNOT gates in the compressed circuit only scales quadratically with the system size, which allows for the simulations of time dynamics of very large 1D spin chains. We derive the compressed circuit representations for different special cases of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian. We compare and demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach by performing simulations on quantum computers.

Topological edge modes without symmetry in quasiperiodically driven spin chains

Here we construct an example of a 1d quasiperiodically driven spin chain whose edge states can coherently store quantum information, protected by a combination of localization, dynamics, and topology. In a sharp departure from topological phases in static and periodically driven (Floquet) spin chains, this model does not rely upon microscopic symmetry protection: Instead, the edge states are protected purely by emergent dynamical symmetries. We explore the dynamical signatures of this emergent dynamical symmetry-protected topological (EDSPT) order through exact numerics, time evolving block decimation, and analytic high-frequency expansion, finding evidence that the EDSPT is a stable dynamical phase protected by bulk many-body localization up to (at least) stretched-exponentially long timescales, and possibly beyond. We argue that EDSPTs are special to the quasiperiodically driven setting, and cannot arise in Floquet systems. Moreover, we find evidence of a type of boundary critical with no known static or Floquet analogue, in which the edge spin dynamics transition from quasiperiodic to chaotic, leading to bulk thermalization.

Unraveling the nature of Fe-doping mediated inter- and intra-chain interactions in Ca 3 Co 2 O 6

The structural and magnetic properties of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) spin-chain compounds Ca 3 Co 2-x Fe x O 6 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) synthesized by a sol-gel method have been systematically studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), neutron powder diffraction (NPD), dc and ac magnetization measurements. The samples adopt a rhombohedral crystal structure with the space group R-3c in a temperature range of 5–100 K. Fe ions are found to locate at the trigonal prism Co2 crystallographic sites. Fe doping converts some of low-spin Co 3+ ions at Co1 octahedral sites into Co 2+ ions. For the high-temperature paramagnetic phase, the Curie paramagnetic temperature θp changes its sign from positive to negative at x = 0.2, implying that the dominant magnetic interaction is driven from ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) upon Fe substitution. A partial low-spin to high-spin state crossover of the Co1 ions is observed at high Fe-doping level x = 0.3. All the samples exhibit a long-range spin-density wave (SDW) AFM ordering below TN, followed by a spin-glass-like transition at Tf. These low-temperature magnetic phases were significantly suppressed upon Fe doping. The Fe substitution in Ca 3 Co 2-x Fe x O 6 weakened both intrachain and interchain magnetic interactions, caused by enhanced magnetic disorder due to the different magnetic characters of Ising Co and Heisenberg Fe spins.

Spectroscopic signatures of next-nearest-neighbor hopping in the charge and spin dynamics of doped one-dimensional antiferromagnets

In this work, we study the impact of next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) hopping on the low-energy collective excitations of strongly correlated doped antiferromagnetic cuprate spin chains. Specifically, we use exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group method to study the single-particle spectral function, the dynamical spin and charge structure factors, and the Cu L-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) intensity of the doped t-t'-J model for a set of t' values. We find evidence for the breakdown of spin-charge separation as |t'| increases and identify its fingerprints in the dynamical response functions. The inclusion of nnn hopping couples the spinon and holon excitations, resulting in the formation of a spin-polaron, where a ferromagnetic spin polarization cloud dresses the doped carrier. The spin-polaron manifests itself as additional spectral weight in the dynamical correlation functions, which appear simultaneously in the spin- and charge-sensitive channels. We also demonstrate that RIXS can provide a unique view of the spin-polaron, due to its sensitivity to both the spin and charge degrees of freedom.

Low-dimensional metal–organic frameworks: a pathway to design, explore and tune magnetic structures

Here, the magnetic structure adopted by a material relies on symmetry, the hierarchy of exchange interactions between magnetic ions and local anisotropy. A direct pathway to control the magnetic interactions is to enforce dimensionality within the material, from zero-dimensional isolated magnetic ions, one-dimensional (1D) spin-chains, two-dimensional (2D) layers to three-dimensional (3D) order. Being able to design a material with a specific dimensionality for the phenomena of interest is non-trivial. While many advances have been made in the area of inorganic magnetic materials, organic compounds offer distinct and potentially more fertile ground for material design. In particular magnetic metal–organic frameworks (mMOFs) combine magnetism with non-magnetic property functionality on the organic linkers within the structural framework, which can further be tuned with mild perturbations of pressure and field to induce phase transitions. Here, it is examined how neutron scattering measurements on mMOFs can be used to directly determine the magnetic structure when the magnetic ions are in a 2D layered environment within the wider 3D crystalline framework. The hydrated formate, in deuterated form, Co(DCOO) 2 ·2D 2 O, which was one of the first magnetic MOFs to be investigated with neutron diffraction, is reinvestigated as an exemplar case.

Quasi-one-dimensional Pb 5 Re 3 O 15 : A 5 d realization of the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain

Quasi-one-dimensional (1D) magnetic compounds connect the exact solutions of low-dimensional magnetic geometries, which promise quantum spin liquid behavior and exotic quasiparticles, with real-world materials, in which competing magnetic interactions affect their implementation in quantum information science. Here, the structural determination and quasi-1D magnetic behavior of a previously unreported compound, Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 , is presented. Like the anisotropic triangular A 3 ⁢ReO 5 ⁢Cl 2 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca) materials, Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 contains [ReO 5 ] square pyramids inserted into anion-centered quasi-two-dimensional layers and hosts spin-1/2 moments on the Re 6+ ions. Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 , however, has a more ideal quasi-1D geometry than the A 3 ⁢ReO 5 ⁢Cl 2 materials, with larger interchain distances and interlayer spacing. Quasi-1D magnetic behavior in Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 is confirmed by fitting the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility with the Bonner-Fisher model for a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetically coupled chain, yielding an intrachain coupling constant of |J|/k B =54.5K. Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 is highly insulating at room temperature, and heat capacity data below 10 K reveal a linear-T contribution that suggests the presence of low-temperature spinon excitations. Finally, with a lack of three-dimensional ordering down to at least 0.6 K, Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 is proposed as a model system for studying the quantum magnetism of quasi-1D Heisenberg chains in a real-world 5d 1 antiferromagnetic material.

Rethinking the magnetic properties of lepidocrocite: A density functional theory and cluster expansion study

The iron oxyhydroxide lepidocrocite (g-FeOOH) is an abundant mineral critical to a number of chemical and technological applications. Of particular interest is the ground state and nite temperature magnetic order, and the subsequent impact this has upon crystal properties. The magnetic properties, investigated in this work are governed primarily through superexchange interactions, and have been calculated using density functional theory and cluster expansion methods. Quantication of these exchange terms has facilitated the determination of the ground state magneto-crystalline structure and subsequent calculation of its lattice constants, elastic moduli, cohesive enthalpy, and electronic density of states. Further, using a collinear magnetic conguration model, the magnetic heat capacity versus temperature has been studied and the Neel temperature obtained.

Block-Type Antiferromagnetism in Single Chain Quasi-One-Dimensional K 3 ⁢Fe 2 ⁢Se 4

One-dimensional (1D) structures provide a unique platform to study the correlated quantum interactions and phase transitions such as unconventional magnetism and superconducting states. Here, we report that iron chalcogenide K 3 ⁢Fe 2 ⁢Se 4 exhibits an unusual block-type canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with a clear single chain quasi-1D structure, which is structurally different from the two-leg ladder BaFe 2 ⁢Se 3 , through both experimental measurements and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. The narrow bandgap semiconductor K 3 ⁢Fe 2 ⁢Se 4 has a quasi-1D edge-shared FeSe4 tetrahedra chain structure and orders antiferromagnetically below 110 K. The magnetic moments couple antiferromagnetically along the quasi-1D chain direction of the 𝑏 axis and form an up-down-down-up (↑−↓−↓−↑)–like spin structure with a commensurate propagation vector 𝒌=⁢(0,0,0), where block-type spin ↑−↑ or ↓−↓ coupling are between the longer Fe-Fe bonds of the quasi-1D chain. DMRG results show that block antiferromagnetic state is stable in K 3 ⁢Fe 2 ⁢Se 4 and reveal that the block-ordered arrangement of Fe 2.5+ ions spins arise from the competition between ferromagnetic and AFM interaction in the presence of strong electronic correlation. Our research results not only report the discovery of a clear block-type canted antiferromagnetic structure in a real quasi-1D chain material but also provide a theoretical approach to understand the block-type antiferromagnetism in quasi-1D iron chalcogenides.

Canted antiferromagnetism and spin reorientation in corner-shared single chain quasi-one-dimensional Ba 2 ⁢FeSe 3

Here, we report the canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure together with a spin reorientation in a single chain quasi-one-dimensional (Q-1D) iron chalcogenide Ba 2⁢ FeSe 3 . Ba 2 ⁢FeSe 3 crystallizes in Pnma (No. 62) orthorhombic structure with linear single iron chains consisting of corner-shared distorted FeSe 4 tetrahedra along the 𝑏 axis. Ba 2 ⁢FeSe 3 is a narrow-gap semiconductor and orders AFM below 60 K. Modeling of neutron powder diffraction data reveals a canted AFM ground state of magnetic space group 𝑃⁢𝑎⁢21/𝑐 (BNS No. 14.80) with commensurate propagation vector 𝐤 =(0, $\frac{1}{2}$, 0), where the Fe ion spins are AFM aligned with up-down-up-down (↑−↓−↑−↓) sequence along the Q-1D chain direction of the 𝑏 axis. In the magnetically ordered state, the canting of magnetic moments reorients from the 𝑎⁢𝑐 plane to the 𝑎⁢𝑏 plane below 30 K, with a 10° tilting angle toward the 𝑎 axis, and the magnetic moment does not induce a net moment in either orientation. The density functional theory results indicate that an ↑−↓−↑−↓ AFM state is stabilized along the chain direction. In this work, we elucidate the unique canted AFM of the iron chalcogenide and pave the way for searching exotic physics in Q-1D Ba 2⁢ FeSe 3 .

Quasi-One-Dimensional Spin Excitations in the Iron Pnictide NaFe 0.53 ⁢Cu 0.47 ⁢As

Spectroscopic measurements in model 1D correlated systems offer insights for understanding their two-dimensional counterparts, which include the cuprate and iron pnictide/chalcogenide superconductors. A major challenge is the identification of such correlated systems with dominantly 1D physics. Here, in this Letter, inelastic neutron scattering measurements on NaFe 0.53⁢ Cu 0.47 ⁢As single crystal directly reveal quasi-1D spin excitations, resulting from atomic order that leads to magnetic Fe and nonmagnetic Cu chains. The dominant exchange interaction is antiferromagnetic along the chain [𝑆⁢𝐽 ∥ ≈ 90.1⁢(3) meV], whereas the inter-chain couplings are much weaker [𝑆⁢𝐽 ⊥ ≈ −2.4⁢(1) meV and 𝑆⁢𝐽 c ≈ 0.15⁢(5) meV]. The quasi-1D spin excitations in NaFe 0.53 ⁢Cu 0.47⁢ As stem from both the Néel and stripe vectors, with Néel excitations sensitive to Fe impurities on the Cu site. The spin excitations in quasi-1D NaFe 0.53 ⁢Cu 0.47⁢ As and quasi-2D FeSe exhibit a striking resemblance, suggesting a common origin for their coexistent stripe and Néel excitations. Our findings demonstrate magnetic dilution in NaFeAs leads to dimension reduction of its magnetic degree of freedom, presenting a strategy for discovering low-dimensional quantum materials.

Structure-Spin-Transport Anomaly in Quasi-One-Dimensional Ba9Fe3Te15 under High Pressure

Recently, a series of novel compounds Ba3MX5 (M= Fe, Ti, V; X=Se, Te) with hexagonal crystal structures composed of quasi-1-dimensional (1D) magnetic chains has been synthesized by our research team using high-pressure and high-temperature methods. The initial hexagonal phases persist to the maximum achievable pressure, while spin configurations and magnetic interactions may change dramatically as a result of considerable reductions in interchain separations upon pressurization. These compounds therefore offer unique possibilities for studying the evolution of intrinsic electronic structures in quasi-1D magnetic systems. Here we present a systematic investigation of Ba9Fe3Te15, in which the interchain separations between trimerized 1D chains (~10.2 Å) can be effectively modulated by external high pressure. The crystal structure especially along the 1D chains exhibits an abnormal expansion at ~5GPa, which accompanies trimerization entangled anomalous mixed-high-low spin transition. An insulator-metal transition has been observed under high pressure as a result of charge-transfer gap closing. Pressure-induced superconductivity emerges at 26GPa, where the charge-transfer gap fully closes, 3D electronic configuration forms and local spin fully collapses.
