Importance of Electron Correlation on the Geometry and Electronic Structure of [2Fe–2S] Systems: A Benchmark Study of the [Fe 2 S 2 (SCH 3 ) 4 ] 2–,3–,4– , [Fe 2 S 2 (SCys) 4 ] 2– , [Fe 2 S 2 (S- p -tol) 4 ] 2– , and [Fe 2 S 2 (S- o -xyl) 4 ] 2– Complexes

Iron–sulfur clusters are crucial for biological electron transport and catalysis. Obtaining accurate geometries, energetics, manifolds of their excited electronic states, and reduction energies is important to understand their role in these processes. Here, using a [2Fe–2S] model complex with Fe II and Fe III oxidation states, which leads to different charges, i.e., [Fe 2 S 2 (SMe) 4 ] 2–,3–,4– , we benchmarked a variety of computational methodologies ranging from density functional theory (DFT) to post-Hartree–Fock methods, including complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF), multireference configuration interaction, the second-order N-electron valence state perturbation theory (NEVPT2), and the linearized integrand approximation of adiabatic connection (AC0) approaches. Additionally, we studied three experimentally well-characterized complexes, [Fe 2 S 2 (SCys) 4 ] 2– , [Fe 2 S 2 (S-o-tol) 4 ] 2– , and [Fe 2 S 2 (S-o-xyl) 4 ] 2– , via DFT methods. We conclude that the dynamic electron correlation is important for accurately predicting the geometry of these complexes. Broken symmetry (BS) DFT correctly predicts experimental geometries of low-spin multiplicity, while CASSCF does not. However, BS-DFT significantly overestimates the difference between the low- and high-spin electronic states for a given oxidation state. At the same time, CASSCF underestimates it but provides relative energies closer to the reference NEVPT2 results. Finally, AC0 provides energetics of NEVPT2 quality with the additional advantage of being able to use large CASSCF sizes. NEVPT2 gives the best estimates of the Fe III /Fe III → Fe II /Fe III (4.27 eV) and Fe II /F III → Fe II /F II (7.72 eV) reduction energies. The results provide insight into the electronic structure of these complexes and assist in the understanding of their physical properties.

A new synthetic method of [Ru(2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine)(2,2′-bipyridine)Cl] + complexes using cis -[Ru(2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine)(NCCH 3 ) 2 Cl] + as an intermediate and comparison to a method using [Ru(benzene)(2,2′-bipyridine)Cl] + intermediates

A new method of synthesizing [Ru(terpy)(bpy)Cl] + (terpy = 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine, bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) complexes using the starting material cis-[Ru(terpy)(NCCH 3 ) 2 Cl](PF 6 ) is reported. The yields of four derivatives ([Ru(terpy)(NN)Cl](PF 6 ): NN = bpy, 1; 4,4′-(MeO) 2 bpy, 2; 4,4′-(CF 3 ) 2 bpy, 3; 2,2′-biquinoline, 4) with this method range from 58 to 94 % and are similar to or greater than a known reaction in which the starting material is [Ru(benzene)(NN)Cl](PF 6 ). However, the use of cis-[Ru(terpy)(NCCH 3 ) 2 Cl](PF 6 ) results in lower levels of homoleptic Ru byproducts in the synthesis of 1 as compared to the use of [Ru(benzene)(bpy)Cl](PF 6 ) as determined by 1 H NMR spectroscopy. In addition, a high-purity and gram-scale synthesis of cis-[Ru(terpy)(NCCH 3 ) 2 Cl](PF 6 ) that does not use column chromatography is reported, in contrast to the original synthesis disclosed in the literature.

Stabilization of [(N 5 ) 2 BX] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 X 2 ] 2– (X = H, F, Cl, Br) by Conjugation and Hyperconjugation Effects

The isolation of nucleophilic boron bases has led to a paradigm shift in boron chemistry. Previous studies of the bis(carbene) borylene complexes revealed that these compounds possess strong donor abilities, and their reaction inertness is due to the large steric hindrance between boron reagents and reactant. In the present study, we have theoretically studied the [(N 5 ) 2 BX] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 X 2 ] 2– compounds (X = H, F, Cl, Br). Their electronic structures and properties are discussed by using the NBO, LOL, and ELF methods. We found that both π-conjugation and hyperconjugation effects can effectively stabilize the substituted nucleophilic anionic boron compounds [(N 5 ) 2 BX] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 X 2 ] 2– . Substituents, especially X = H, stabilize the boron center through highly delocalized π-bonding, involving the formally “empty” in-plane p orbitals of the boron atom. While the halogen substituents have high electron withdrawal ability, leading to systems being less stable, we suggest the borinium anions [(N 5 ) 2 BH] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 H 2 ] 2– as possible synthetic targets of novel environmentally friendly catalysts.

Iodine Close Packing in Hybrid Halide Bismuth(III) and Antimony(III) Semiconductors: (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Bi 2 I 10 and (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Sb 2 I 10

Simple features in complex hybrid inorganic–organic crystalline materials provide opportunities for targeted discovery of materials with desired optoelectronic properties. In this study, we report the structure and optoelectronic properties of isostructural (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Bi 2 I 10 and (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Sb 2 I 10 . The crystal structures are characterized by corner-connected metal-iodide octahedral chains that form a cubic close-packed iodine inorganic framework. Variable temperature UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy reveals stark contrasts in the onset of absorption and color changes between the [MX6]3– based structures, due to differences in the interaction of the (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2+ organic ammonium cation and the iodine packing of the inorganic framework. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal flat bands reflective of the pseudo-1D crystal structure. Dark microwave conductivity (DMC) and time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) reveal an excitonic character with long carrier lifetimes, consistent with the electronically confined octahedral chains. Comparison of the structural features with those of other diammonium-containing crystals reveals that diammoniumheptane can substitute into structures, displacing inorganic octahedra while retaining a close-packed anion framework. This provides a means for targeting new hybrid materials in which “vacancy-ordering” provides a crystal chemical approach for targeting desirable optoelectronic properties.

BaCu 4/3 Si 2/3 P 2 and BaCu 2–( x + y ) Zn x Si y P 2 : Expanding the Semiconducting Landscape in the ThCr 2 Si 2 -Type Family

ThCr 2 Si 2 -type layered materials are a large family of compounds with applications ranging from thermoelectricity to magnetism, with the vast majority of the members exhibiting metallic behavior. Here, in this study, we synthesized a new group of materials with Cu-Si and Cu-Zn-Si square nets with the general formula BaCu 1.33 Si 0.67 P 2 and BaCu 2–(x+y) Zn x Si y P 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.9; 0.3 ≤ y ≤ 0.7). Several synthesized compounds are charge-balanced semiconductors, which are rare in the ThCr 2 Si 2 family. All the reported compounds crystallize in the ThCr 2 Si 2 -type tetragonal I4/mmm space group, with Cu/Zn/Si jointly occupying the same 4d crystallographic site. In the Zn-free composition, BaCu 1.33 Si 0.67 P 2 , Ba, and P each occupy a single crystallographic site. The introduction of Zn results in the expansion of the unit cell and splitting the Ba atomic sites along the [001] direction. Such structural displacement of the Ba atoms was confirmed by the heat capacity measurements. Band structure and density-of-states calculations on ordered hypothetical structural models reveal either a small bandgap (∼0.2 eV) or semimetallic band structures. The compounds reported here exhibit high Seebeck coefficients and ultralow thermal conductivity, making them promising candidates for the development of thermoelectric materials.

Grafting of 2 (2-hydroxy-5-vinylphenyl) 2H-benzotriazole onto polymers with aliphatic groups. Synthesis and polymerization of 2 (2-hydroxy-5-isopropenylphenyl) 2H-benzotriazole and a new synthesis of 2 (2-hydroxy-5-vinylphenyl) 2H-benzotriazole

Successful grafting of 2(2-hydroxy-5-vinylphenyl)2H-benzotriazole onto saturated aliphatic C-H groups of polymers has been accomplished. When the grafting reaction was carried out in chlorobenzene at 150 C = 160 C with di-tertiarybutylperoxide as the grafting initiator, grafts as high as 20 percent - 30 percent at a grafting efficiency of 50 percent and 80 percent have readily been obtained. The grafting reaction was carried out in tubes sealed under high vacuum since trace amounts of oxygen cause complete inhibition of the grafting reaction by the phenolic monomer. On a variety of different polymers including atactic polypropylene, ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(butyl acrylate), and polycarbonate were used.

High Pressure–Temperature Study of MgF 2 , CaF 2 , and BaF 2 by Raman Spectroscopy: Phase Transitions and Vibrational Properties of AF 2 Difluorides

The phase transition of AF 2 difluorides strongly depends on pressure, temperature, and cationic radius. Here, we have investigated the phase transition of three difluorides, including MgF 2 , CaF 2 , and BaF 2 , at simultaneously high pressures and temperatures using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction in externally heated diamond anvil cells up to 55 GPa at 300–700 K. Rutile-type difluoride MgF 2 with a small cationic radius undergoes a transition to the CaCl 2 -type phase at 9.9(1) GPa and 300 K, to the HP-PdF 2 -type phase at 21.0(2) GPa, and to the cotunnite-type phase at 44.2(2) GPa. The phase transition pressure to the HP-PdF 2 and cotunnite structure at 300 K for our single crystal was found to be higher than that in previous studies using polycrystalline samples. Elevating the temperature increases the transition pressure from rutile- to the CaCl 2 -type phase but has a negative influence on the transition pressure when MgF 2 transforms from the HP-PdF 2 - to cotunnite-type phase. Meanwhile, the transition pressure from the CaCl 2 - to HP-PdF 2 -type phase for MgF 2 was identified to be independent of the temperature. Raman peaks suspected to belong to the α-PbO 2 -type phase were observed at 14.6–21.0(1) GPa and 400–700 K. At 300 K, difluorides CaF 2 and BaF 2 in the fluorite structure with larger cationic radii transform to the cotunnite-type phase at 9.6(3) and 3.0(3) GPa at 300 K, respectively, and BaF 2 further undergoes a transition to the Ni 2 In-type phase at 15.5(4) GPa. For both CaF 2 and BaF 2 , elevating the temperature leads to a lower transition pressure from fluorite- to the cotunnite-type phase but has little influence on the transition to the Ni 2 In structure. Raman data provide valuable insights for mode Grüneisen parameters. We note that the mode Grüneisen parameters for both difluorides and dioxides vary linearly with the cation radius. Further calculations for the mode Grüneisen parameters at high pressures for MgF 2 , CaF 2 , and BaF 2 yield a deeper understanding of the thermodynamic properties of the difluorides.

Shallow core levels, or how to determine the doping and T c of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + δ and Bi 2 Sr 2 CuO 6 + δ without cooling

In this study, determining the doping level in high-temperature cuprate superconductors is crucial for understanding the origin of superconductivity in these materials and for unlocking their full potential. However, accurately determining the doping level remains a significant challenge due to a complex interplay of factors and limitations in various measurement techniques. In particular, in Bi 2 Sr 2 CuO 6+δ and Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ , where the mobile carriers are introduced by non-stoichiometric oxygen δ, the determination has been extremely problematic. Here, we study the doping dependence of the electronic structure of these materials in angle-resolved photoemission and find that both the doping level, p, and the superconducting transition temeprature, T c can be precisely determined from the binding energy of the Bi 5d core-levels. The measurements can be performed at room temperature, enabling the determination of p and T c without cooling the samples. This should be very helpful for further studies of these materials

Synthesis and structural characterization of 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine zinc formate: Hydroboration and hydrosilylation of CO 2 and carbonyl compounds

The zinc formate compound (terpy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 is obtained via the reaction of Zn(O 2 CH) 2 with 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine (terpy) and has been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction as possessing formate ligands that coordinate via a κ 1 -monodentate coordination mode, which is in accord with IR spectroscopic studies. In terms of reactivity, (terpy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 participates in catalytic transformations involving CO 2 and carbonyl compounds via hydrosilylation and hydroboration reactions. For example, (terpy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 achieves hydroboration of Me 2 CO and Ph 2 CO by HBpin to afford R 2 C(H)OBpin, and triple insertion of Ph 2 CO, PhC(O)Me, Me 2 CO and PhCHO into the Si–H bonds of PhSiH 3 to afford PhSi[OCH(R)R’] 3 . In addition, CO 2 also undergoes hydroboration and hydrosilylation by HBpin and (MeO) 3 SiH in the presence of (terpy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 to afford HCO 2 Bpin and HCO 2 Si(OMe) 3 , respectively.

Confinement of quasi-atomic structures in Ti 2 N and Ti 3 N 2 MXene electrides

Metal carbides, nitrides, or carbonitrides of early transition metals, better known as MXenes, possess notable structural, electrical, and magnetic properties. Analyzing electronic structures by calculating structural stability, band structure, density of states, Bader charge transfer, and work functions utilizing first principle calculations, we revealed that titanium nitride MXenes, namely Ti 2 N and Ti 3 N 2 , have excess anionic electrons in their lattice voids, making them MXene electrides. Bulk Ti 3 N 2 has competing antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) configurations with slightly more stable AFM configuration, while the Ti 2 N MXene is nonmagnetic. Although Ti 3 N 2 favors AFM configuration with hexagonal crystal systems having 6/ mmm point group symmetry, Ti 3 N 2 does not support altermagnetism. The monolayer of the Ti 3 N 2 MXene is a ferromagnetic electride. These unique properties of having non-nuclear interstitial anionic electrons in the electronic structure of titanium nitride MXene have not yet been reported in the literature. Density functional theory calculations show TiN is neither an electride, MXene, or magnetic.

Heterometallic UO 2 2+ /Ag + Complexes: Structural Design and Luminescence Properties

Reported here are the synthesis, structural characterization, and luminescence properties of 11 novel UO 2 2+ /Ag + heterometallic complexes. Halogenated benzoic acids (2,6-dihalobenzoic acid (halo = F, Br), 3,5-dichlorobenzoic acid, and 3-halobenzoic acid (halo = Br, I)) and N-donor polycyclic ligands (2,2′-bipyridine, 2,2’;6′,2″-terpyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2′-bipyrimidine) were employed to synthesize a set of compounds and induce structural diversity. The primary mode of coordination with the uranyl cation is hexagonal bipyramidal monomeric units with three halobenzoate ligands in the equatorial plane, though 1-D chains with pentagonal bipyramidal uranyl centers also form. The Ag + cations coordinate preferentially to the N-donor ligands and serve as counter-cations for the anionic uranyl motifs. The soft ligand character of the N-donor molecules is found to be a requirement for the inclusion of the Ag + cation into the structures. Anionic uranyl units and cationic silver units assemble via noncovalent interactions between π systems on adjacent rings and between halogens (when Br and I are present). Solid-state emission spectra display the usual uranyl band with superimposed vibronic fine structure, except for that of compound 1 , which shows emission from the 2,2′-bipyridine center. This family of compounds represents a substantial contribution to the already rich library of UO 2 2+ /Ag + compounds, and the synthetic parameters discussed within reveal a platform for the design of new heterometallic uranyl-containing materials.

Coupling of Klein-Andreev resonant states in B⁢i 2 ⁢S⁢r 2 ⁢CaC⁢u 2 ⁢O 8+𝑥 -graphene-B⁢i 2⁢ S⁢r 2 ⁢CaC⁢u 2 ⁢O 8+𝑥 devices

Quantum devices require coherent coupling over macroscopic distances. Recently, resonances due to Klein tunneling and Andreev reflection states (KARS) have been observed in a naturally occurring p-n junction at the interface between B⁢i 2 ⁢S⁢r 2 ⁢CaC⁢u 2 ⁢O 8+𝑥 (BSCCO), a high−⁢𝑇 c superconductor (HTS), and graphene. The resonances appear as conductance oscillations with gating. Here, in this study, we show coupling between the KARS in BSCCO-graphene-BSCCO devices of varying separation (L). The coupling is evidenced by a power-law decay of resonance period as L increases from tens of nanometers to microns. These results demonstrate the long-distance coupling of KARS cavities in graphene-HTS junctions. The length dependence seen in experiments is supported by single-particle spectral functions which show KARS are coupled by transport modes in graphene. The strong coupling between KARS in BSCCO-graphene-BSCCO devices showcases the possibility of HTS-graphene junctions for quantum circuits and unconventional Josephson junctions.

Combined Cyclohexene Dehydrogenation and Oxygenation over VO x /CeO 2 with O 2 and Vaporized H 2 O 2 as Oxidants

Selective oxidation of hydrocarbons over metal oxide catalysts frequently invokes Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanisms involving lattice oxygens. At typical reaction temperatures, oxidative dehydrogenation reactions predominate and compete with total oxidation; production of more useful oxygenates is challenging. However, because regeneration of lattice oxygens has been previously hypothesized to involve transient formation of surface hydroperoxides or peroxides, MvK cycles should be capable of forming products derived from both lattice oxygen and surface (hydro)peroxide species, under certain conditions. In this report, we study the low temperature reaction of cyclohexene with O 2 over CeO 2 -supported VO x catalysts. Below 150°C and for higher VO x loading, cyclohexene converts to benzene and trans-1,2-cyclohexanediol with no appreciable CO 2 formation. Control experiments show similar behavior in other supported vanadia catalysts. Conversely, using vaporized H 2 O 2 as oxidant exclusively gives 1,2-cyclohexanedione, suggesting that MvK reoxidation cycles do not directly involve H 2 O 2 . Furthermore, these findings contribute to the current understanding of selective oxidation mechanisms, and demonstrate routes to the formation of industrially useful oxygenates with O 2 or vaporized H 2 O 2 over metal oxide catalysts.

Si–Cl Bond Activations at Ni(0) to Give Bimetallic Ni(I) μ 1,2 -Cl–SiR 1 R 2 Complexes that Undergo Selective Hydrogenolyses to R 1 R 2 SiH 2 Dihydrosilanes

Chlorosilanes are cheap and abundant raw materials as crucial building blocks in silicon chemistry, yet the metal-mediated activation and functionalization of Si–Cl bonds typically require precious metal sources due to their thermodynamic inertness. Herein, we report the stoichiometric, facile activation, and hydrogenolysis of chlorosilanes mediated by a series of low-valent NHC–Ni (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) complexes. Treatment of a Ni(0) complex (IPr)Ni(η 6 -toluene) (IPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazole-2-ylidene) with chlorosilanes (R 1 R 2 SiCl 2 , R 1 = Cl, R 2 = Cl, Me, Ph, or R 1 = R 2 = Me, Et, Ph, 4-MePh) rapidly afforded di-Ni(I) complexes with a bridging silyl ligand ([(IPr)Ni] 2 (μ-SiR 1 R 2 Cl)(μ-Cl), 1 R1,R2 ) in high yields. Use of a bulkier chlorosilane, Ph 2 SiCl 2 , allowed the isolation of the mono-Ni(II) silyl complex (IPr)Ni(SiPh 2 Cl)Cl (2 Ph ) as an intermediate generated via Si–Cl oxidative addition, which underwent comproportionation with (IPr)Ni(η 6 -toluene) to form 1 Ph,Ph in nearly quantitative yield. Interestingly, 1 R1,R2 was found to react with H 2 at room temperature to form mono- or di-hydrosilanes in moderate to high yields, and the product selectivity was found to be highly dependent on the identity of substituents on Si. In conclusion, these results demonstrate a novel example of facile Si–Cl activation and hydrogenolysis mediated by low-valent mono- and dinuclear NHC–Ni complexes under mild conditions.

Anomalous proximitized transport in metal/quantum magnet heterostructure Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 /Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7

Fluctuations of quantum spins play a crucial role in the emergence of exotic magnetic phases and excitations. The lack of the charge degree of freedom in insulating quantum magnets, however, precludes such fluctuations from mediating electronic transport. Here, we show that the quantum fluctuations of a localized frustrated magnet induce strong proximitized charge transport of the conduction electrons in a synthetic heterostructure comprising an epitaxial Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 ultrathin film on a single crystal of Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 . The proximity effects are evidenced by the scaling behavior of the Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 resistance in correspondence with the dynamic scaling of the dynamic spincorrelation function of Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 , which is a result of quantum fluctuations near a multiphase quantum critical point. The proximitized transport in Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 can be effectively tuned by a magnetic field through suppressing the quantum spin fluctuations (QSFs) as well as inducing transitions via magnetic anisotropy in Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 . In this study, we establish a pathway for harnessing QSFs in magnetic insulators with electric transport, offering exciting prospects for potential applications in the realm of quantum spintronics.
