Protecting Smart Buildings with STIG

This is a submission for the 2022 Intern Poster Session. The abstract of the poster is: Smart buildings are getting more common, and so are hackers that target them. The physical systems in our businesses and homes are now vulnerable to cyber attacks. Using STIG, an INL program that turns cybersecurity data into graphs, buildings can be better protected.

Earth Energy Balance Assessment at the 2022 BIPM-WMO Metrology for Climate Action Workshop

The BIPM and WMO hosted a five-day workshop in Sept. 2022 to assess the state of current metrology and identify future meteorological needs regarding climate change for the upcoming decade. A resulting broad policy-oriented workshop summary report, written by the workshop’s ~70 international organizers and reviewed by meeting attendees, identifies the current issues in each of nine high-level topic areas and provides recommendations to address them, listing specific needs, pathways, timelines, and responsible agencies or organizations for each. One prominent Topic within the workshop, “Earth Energy Balance,” was organized by the authors of this presentation and resulted in a section of the workshop summary report using the contributions from the topic’s several pre-recorded oral and poster presentations and the outcomes of two interactive real-time community-wide discussion sessions. The Earth-energy-balance topic issues centered on three areas: Radiometric energy measurements, including needed accuracies and stabilities and the use of SI-Traceable Satellites (SITSats), such as CLARREO and TRUTHS, to achieve them; improved on-orbit calibration sources, including the Sun and the Moon, thermal-infrared and UV sources, and space-flight blackbodies; and the four primary Earth-heat storage reservoirs of the oceans, land, permafrost, and cryosphere, giving an inventory of where and how much of the Earth’s energy is stored and how much uptake there is of the incoming energy. This presentation will summarize the results of the Earth Energy Balance topic from the 2022 BIPM-WMO Metrology for Climate Action Workshop.

Student Support for the “Frontiers in Attosecond & Ultrafast X-ray Science” School

The new millennium witnessed two revolutionary breakthroughs in ultrafast x-ray science: table-top XUV sources based on high harmonic generation in gases ushered in the attosecond era while facility-based x-ray free-electron lasers opened the path for intense, femtosecond hard x-rays. This award requested scholarship funds for a 2019 and 2023 School whose prime objective was the training of young scientists in these emerging complementary areas both relevant to DOE BES mission. The school entitled the “Frontiers of Attosecond and Ultrafast X-ray Science (FAXS)” (http://www.erice-attosecond.it/) was the second and fourth in a series, which began in 2017. The two Schools were held during March 10-16, 2019 and March 26-31, 2023 at the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture (http://www.ccsem.infn.it/) in Erice, Sicily. The DOE funds supported the registration fee for young scientists (graduate students and postdocs) from US institutions. The registration fees included School participation, lodging and meals over the duration of the School. Note, the third addition of the School was held in 2022 as a virtual event due to the pandemic, DOE funds were not necessary for this event. The FAXS School is a course of the 62th and 63rd International School of Quantum Electronics under the directorship of Prof. Diederik Wiersma (University of Florence). The Directors for the FAXS School are Louis DiMauro (The Ohio State University, USA) and Mauro Nisoli (Politecnico di Milano, Italy). The FAXS School program consisted of approximately 10 lectures by leading experts in attosecond and x-ray science (see attached list). Most lecturers delivered a series of three 1-hour lectures. The lecturers were required to spend the full 5 days at the school so to promote interaction with the students. The Erice Majorana Center venue accommodated ~75 young scientists. The registration fee covered the cost of participating in the school, lodging and meals for the entire duration of the school. The schedule consisted of lectures every morning and afternoon except for one afternoon that was reserved for an archaeological excursion. Every evening had a student/postdoc poster session and social gatherings at the Majorana Center to encourage further interaction of all participants and lecturers. The two FAXS Schools attracted an international group of young scientists. The DOE funds supported the registration fee for 11 students/postdocs from US institutions (5 supported in 2019 and 6 supported in 2023). The management of the DOE fellowships were administered through the Research Foundation of The Ohio State University. FAXS scholarships for European students/postdocs were provided by European funding sources administered by co-Director, Prof. Nisoli. All students/postdocs were encouraged to present a poster. Travel expenses to the FAXS School were the responsibility of the student/postdoc home institution.

NRAP-Open-IAM: NRAP Open Source Integrated Assessment Model

Note: This is the last version (a2.6.1) of NRAP-Open-IAM released during NRAP Phase II in 2022. The latest version of NRAP-Open-IAM is available here: https://edx.netl.doe.gov/dataset/phase-iii-nrap-open-iam NRAP-Open-IAM is an open-source software product that enables quantification of containment effectiveness and leakage risk at storage sites in the context of system uncertainties and variability. NRAP-Open-IAM represents the next-generation in a line of systems-based computational models developed for quantitative geological carbon storage (GCS) risk assessment. The model comprises a set of reduced-order and analytical models of various components of the GCS system, potential leakage pathways, receptors of concern including impact to groundwater resources and the atmosphere, a framework to support stochastic simulation, time stepping, uncertainty quantification, other analytical functionality for scenario and risk-performance evaluation, and a basic graphical user interface to support scenario development, data input simulation definition, and basic post-processing and results display. As the NRAP Open-IAM functionality continues to evolve, we continue to add to its capability to develop quantitative, probabilistic, and time-dependent profiles of the evolution of risk at a GCS site and evaluate the influence of uncertain parameters on uncertainty in predicted risk. It can be used to quantify the dynamics of reservoir saturation plume and pressure-affected area, for evaluation of the area of potential groundwater impact (i.e., Area of Review) and monitoring requirements to support cost and regulatory analysis, and for consideration of different post-injection site care and closure scenarios. This submission contains the current version of NRAP-Open-IAM available for evaluation and testing. To use the NRAP-Open-IAM, download the source code (https://edx.netl.doe.gov/dataset/08f396c8-bc5f-44ad-a028-6e98a6ea6d70/resource/4c24a3da-3b40-4ffe-9892-c807ae9f8760) then open the NRAP-Open-IAM user's guide (https://edx.netl.doe.gov/dataset/08f396c8-bc5f-44ad-a028-6e98a6ea6d70/resource/8b27335a-343c-4836-b8a3-3ad0bdc9e669) to read more about the tool. Installation instructions for Windows, Mac, and Linux can be found in the "installers" folder of the extracted NRAP-Open-IAM folder and describe setup of environment (e.g., Python libraries) needed for proper work of the tool. Test of installation can be done by running "python openiam_setup_tests.py" in the "setup" folder. The installation test also runs a test suite to see if the NRAP-Open-IAM has been installed correctly. To run the test suite separately, run "python iam_test.py" in the "test" folder.
