2MASS J15491331-3539118: a new low-mass wide companionof the GQ Lup system

Substellar companions at wide separation around stars hosting planets or brown dwarfs (BDs) yet close enough for their formation in the circumstellar disc are of special interest. In this Letter we report the discovery of a wide (projected separation ~16".0, or 2400AU, and position angle 114.61°) companion of the GQLup A-B system, most likely gravitationally bound to it. A VLT/X-shooter spectrum shows that this star, 2MASS J15491331-3539118, is a bonafide low-mass (~0.15 M(ʘ) ) young stellar object (YSO) with stellar and accretion/ejection properties typical of Lupus YSOs of similar mass, and with kinematics consistent with that of the GQLup A-B system. A possible scenario for the formation of the triple system is that GQ Lup A and 2MASS J15491331-3539118 formed by fragmentation of a turbulent core in the Lup I filament, while GQ Lup B, the BD companion of GQ Lup A at 0".7, formed in situ by the fragmentation of the circumprimary disc. The recent discoveries that stars form along cloud filaments would favour the scenario of turbulent fragmentation for the formation of GQ Lup A and 2MASS J15491331-3539118.

Extending the ICRF into the Infrared: 2MASS - UCAC Astrometry

An external comparison between the infrared 2MASS and the optical UCAC positions was performed, both being on the same system, the ICRS. About 48 million sources in common were identified. Random errors of the 2MASS catalog positions are about 60 to 70 mas per coordinate for the Ks = 4 to 14 range, increasing to about 100 to 150 mas for saturated and very faint stars. Systematic position differences between the 2 catalogs are very small, about 5 to 10 mas as a function of magnitude and color, with somewhat larger errors as a function of right ascension and declination. The extension of the ICRF into the infrared has become a reality.

Spectroscopic Observations of Obscured Populations in the Inner Galaxy: 2MASS-GC02, Terzan 4, and the 200 km s{sup −1} stellar peak

The interpretation of potentially new and already known stellar structures located at low latitudes is hindered by the presence of dense gas and dust, as observations toward these sight lines are limited. We have identified Apache Point Observatory Galaxy Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) stars belonging to the low-latitude globular clusters 2MASS-GC02 and Terzan 4, presenting the first chemical element abundances of stars residing in these poorly studied clusters. As expected, the signature of multiple populations coexisting in these metal-rich clusters is evident. We redetermine the radial velocity of 2MASS-GC02 to be −87 ± 7 km s{sup −1}, finding that this cluster’s heliocentric radial velocity is offset by more than 150 km s{sup −1} from the literature value. We investigate a potentially new low-latitude stellar structure and a kiloparsec-scale nuclear disk (or ring) that has been put forward to explain a high-velocity (V {sub GSR} ∼ 200 km s{sup −1}) peak reported in several Galactic bulge fields based on the APOGEE commissioning observations. New radial velocities of field stars at (l, b) = (−6°,0 °) are presented and combined with the APOGEE observations at negative longitudes to carry out this search. Unfortunately no prominent −200 km s{sup −1} peak at negative longitudes along the plane of the Milky Way are apparent, as predicted for the signature of a nuclear feature. The distances and Gaia EDR3 proper motions of the high-V {sub GSR} stars do not support the current models of stars on bar-supporting orbits as an explanation of the +200 km s{sup −1} peak.

Dwarfs Cooler Than M: The Definition of Spectral Type L Using Discoveries from the 2-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS)

Before the 2-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) began, only six objects were known with spectral types later than M9.5 V. In the first 371 sq. deg. of actual 2MASS survey data, we have identified another twenty such objects spectroscopically confirmed using the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph (LRIS) at the W.M. Keck Observatory.

Near-infrared Variability in the 2MASS Calibration Fields: A Search for Planetary Transit Candidates

The Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) photometric calibration observations cover approximately 6 square degrees on the sky in 35 'calibration fields,' each sampled in nominal photometric conditions between 562 and 3692 times during the 4 years of the 2MASS mission. We compile a catalog of variables from the calibration observations to search for M dwarfs transited by extrasolar planets. We present our methods for measuring periodic and nonperiodic flux variability. From 7554 sources with apparent K(sub s) magnitudes between 5.6 and 16.1, we identify 247 variables, including extragalactic variables and 23 periodic variables. We have discovered three M dwarf eclipsing systems, including two candidates for transiting extrasolar planets.

The search for red AGN with 2MASS

We present the results of a simple, highly efficient 2MASS color-based survey that has already discovered 140 previously unknown red AGN and QSOs. These objects are near-infrared-bright and relatively nearby; the media redshift of the sample is z=0.25, and all but two have z<0.7.

The R-Process Alliance: Hunting for gold in the near-UV spectrum of 2MASS J05383296–5904280

Over the past few years, the R-Process Alliance (RPA) has successfully carried out a search for stars that are highly enhanced in elements produced via the rapid neutron-capture (r-) process. In particular, the RPA has identified a number of relatively bright, highly r-process-enhanced (r-II) stars, suitable for observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), facilitating abundance derivation of elements such as gold (Au) and cadmium (Cd). This paper presents the detailed abundances derived for the metal-poor ([Fe/H] = −2.55) highly r-process-enhanced ([Eu/Fe] = +1.29) r-II star 2MASS J05383296–5904280. One-dimensional local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) elemental abundances were derived via equivalent width and spectral synthesis using high-resolution high signal-to-noise near-UV HST/STIS and optical Magellan/MIKE spectra. Abundances were determined for 43 elements, including 26 neutron-capture elements. In particular, abundances of the rarely studied elements Nb, Mo, Cd, Lu, Os, Pt, and Au are derived from the HST spectrum. These results, combined with RPA near-UV observations of two additional r-II stars, increase the number of Cd abundances derived for r-process-enriched stars from seven to ten and Au abundances from four to seven. A large star-to-star scatter is detected for both of these elements, highlighting the need for more detections enabling further investigations, specifically into possible non-LTE effects.

Constraints on neutrino emission from nearby galaxies using the 2MASS redshift survey and IceCube

The distribution of galaxies within the local universe is characterized by anisotropic features. Observatories searching for the production sites of astrophysical neutrinos can take advantage of these features to establish directional correlations between a neutrino dataset and overdensities in the galaxy distribution in the sky. The results of two correlation searches between a seven-year time-integrated neutrino dataset from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, and the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS) catalog are presented here. The first analysis searches for neutrinos produced via interactions between diffuse intergalactic Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) and the matter contained within galaxies. The second analysis searches for low-luminosity sources within the local universe, which would produce subthreshold multiplets in the IceCube dataset that directionally correlate with galaxy distribution. No significant correlations were observed in either analyses. Herein, constraints are presented on the flux of neutrinos originating within the local universe through diffuse intergalactic UHECR interactions, as well as on the density of standard candle sources of neutrinos at low luminosities.

2MASS extended sources in the zone of avoidance

A new high-resolution near-infrared mapping effort, the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), is now underway and will provide a complete census of galaxies as faint as 13.5 mag (3 mJy) at 2.2 mu m for most of the sky, and similar to 12.1 mag (10 mJy) for regions veiled by the Milky Way.
