A density functional theory based comparative study of hybrid photoemissions from Cl@C 60 , Br@C 60 and I@C 60

Photoionization from atom-C 60 hybrid levels in halogen endofullerene molecules, Cl@C 60 , Br@C 60 and I@C 60 , are calculated using a linear response density functional method. Both the ordinary electron-configuration where the open shell halogen is at the center of C 60 and the stable configuration after the atom receives an electron from C 60 to form a closed shell anion are considered. Similar ground state hybridization is found for all three systems while, in general, a slight weakening of the effect is noticed after the electron transfer. At lower photon energies, cross sections of the outer hybrid levels attain identical shapes from enhancements driven by the C 60 plasmon resonances, while the higher energy emissions remain distinguishable from the differences in atomic responses. These results further show near insensitivity to the choice of a configuration. The inner hybrid cross sections in general exhibit similar overall structures, although differ in details between molecules. Furthermore, for these states the results significantly differ before and after the electron transfer – a feature that can be useful to experimentally determine the real configuration of the molecules via photoelectron spectroscopy.

A Comparative Tribo-Mechanical Behavior Analysis of Laser Cladded Nitronic 60 Coating Against Wrought Nitronic 60 Alloy

In this study the tribological and mechanical behavior of a laser cladded Nitronic 60 coating on maraging steel is compared to that of a wrought Nitronic 60 alloy. A multi-layer Nitronic 60 coating was deposited using laser directed energy deposition, and its microstructure, porosity, and microhardness were characterized. The microhardness of the coated region in the laser cladded Nitronic 60 varied between 270-300 HV whereas that for wrought form was 230 HV. Controlled tribological tests under motor oil lubricated conditions were conducted at both room and elevated temperatures. The laser cladded Nitronic coating exhibited poorer wear resistance at room temperature but higher wear resistance at elevated temperature as compared to the wrought Nitronic alloy. Severe plastic deformation and fracture was observed on the laser cladded coating after the wear tests at both temperatures. Wear mechanisms were investigated based on the morphological and compositional characterization of the wear tracks.

High-spin states in 60 Cu and implications for states in the mirror nucleus 60 Ga

High-spin states in 60 Cu are investigated on the basis of reaction-channel-selected 𝛾-ray spectroscopy. Data stem from three experiments that used the same fusion-evaporation reaction at similar beam energies. The Gammasphere 𝛾-ray spectrometer was combined with the Microball CsI(Tl) detector array and sets of liquid-scintillator neutron detectors which allowed us to identify and tag on evaporated light charged particles and neutrons, respectively. A level scheme is proposed which comprises more than 300 𝛾-ray transitions connecting more than 100 excited states. Predictions from cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations describe the observed high-spin collective structures in 60 Cu. Predictions of shell-model calculations are probed with a suite of low- to medium-spin states of both parities. Taking into account isospin-symmetry-breaking terms in these calculations, a case study of the yrast line of the weakly bound mirror nucleus 60 Ga is presented.

Distribution of ozone between 60 deg North and 60 deg South

The distribution of total column ozone is investigated, using data from the TOMS (Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer) experiment aboard the US Nimbus 7 satellite. The region of interest extends from 60 North to 60 South, encircling the earth. Data for several years have been used in order to assess the long-term variations in the distribution of total column ozone. First results are presented on the seasonal variability of total column ozone in each hemisphere. The effects of the seasons are strongest at the highest latitudes but can still be discerned at the equator. While the variations are similar in the two hemispheres, ozone levels in the north are larger than in the south. Strong similarities are also found in the drift patterns of total column ozone in the two hemispheres. These drift patterns are compared to meteorological phenomena. We find an almost stationary ozone distribution drifts eastward in both hemispheres and this drift shows a seasonal variation. At very high latitudes (70 deg and higher) during spring in the southern hemisphere the ozone distribution is once again almost stationary, indicating that these regions are inside the polar vortex.

Highly Coupled Heterobicycle‐Fused Porphyrin Dimers: Excitonic Coupling and Charge Separation with Coordinated Fullerene, C 60

Abstract Porphyrin dimers have been widely explored and studied owing to their importance in photosynthetic systems. A vast variety of dimers linked by different groups and at different angles have been synthesized and studied; however, the means by which to synthesize rigidly fused porphyrins with direct conjugation of the chromophores remains limited. Such a class of porphyrins may possess interesting properties that unconjugated or stacked dimers may not exhibit. In this study, bisbenzimidazole‐fused porphyrin dimers and their mono‐ and bis−zinc derivatives are synthesized and characterized. As a consequence of excitonic coupling, these dimers exhibit a split Soret band irrespective of the metal ion in the porphyrin cavity. Steady‐state fluorescence and excitation spectra followed by femtosecond transient absorption spectral studies of the heterometallated dimer, (free‐base and zinc porphyrin) reveals the occurrence of efficient singlet‐singlet energy transfer (>95 % efficiency and rate constant >10 12 s −1 ) within the dyad. Further, donor‐acceptor conjugates were formed by metal‐ligand axial coordination of phenyl imidazole functionalized C 60 and were characterized by a variety of physicochemical techniques. Excited state charge separation from both singlet and triplet excited states of ZnP in the conjugates has been established. The lifetime of the final charge‐separated state was in the 30–40 μs range revealing charge stabilization. Interestingly, no charge separation in the conjugate derived from the heterometallated dimer was observed wherein excitation transfer dominated the process. The present study brings out the importance of the rigid π‐spacer connecting porphyrin dimers in governing the energy and electron transfer events when coupled with an electron acceptor.

Synthesis of [60]- and [70]Fullerene-Fused Tetrahydroquinoxaline Derivatives by Oxidative [4 + 2] Cycloaddition with Unusual Reactivity and Regioselectivity

The oxidative [4 + 2] reaction of o-phenylenediamine-derived disulfonamides with fullerene C 60 and C 70 is reported, in which electron-deficient reactants showed high reactivity. The reaction of C 70 exhibited unusual regioselectivity, yielding a [5,6]-adduct as the major product, which was characterized by 1 H, 13 C NMR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Here, DFT calculations revealed the reaction is an inverse-electron-demand Diels–Alder (IEDDA) reaction, and the [5,6]-adduct of C 70 is a kinetic product.

Diurnal stratospheric tide in meridional wind, 30 to 60 KM, by season and monthly mean temperatures, 20 to 60 KM, at 80 deg N and to 0 deg N

The diurnal component in meridional wind was observed for each season at twelve rocket stations. Amplitudes and phases are presented as a function of height-latitude or as vertical profiles. Many of the gross features of the tide persist throughout the year, but as they migrate in height and latitude the amplitude or phase at a given location may undergo large changes with season. Longitudinal variations in the diurnal tide are found in the mid-stratosphere, and it is suggested they are coupled with longitudinal variations in the tropospheric temperature structure.

Thermal inertia mapping of Mars from 60 deg S to 60 deg N

The considered region comprises 81% of the surface of Mars. Thermal inertia I is a composite surface property, which is equal to the square root of the product of three factors, including the thermal conductivity, the density, and the specific heat. I is the sole thermal parameter which governs the temperature variation of a periodically heated homogeneous surface, and, as such, is the prime intermediary between remote temperature observations and their geologic interpretation. The values for the thermal inertia found imply particulate surface materials. The variation in Martian surface thermal conductivity is about two orders of magnitude. Three large regions of low-inertia material are defined. Low-inertia material always possesses high albedo. There is a general tendency for higher-thermal-inertia surfaces to be darker but exceptions occur which may be related to a thin mantling of light dust or bonding of light material.

Galaxies with spectral energy distributions peaking near 60 micrometers. 1: Optical spectroscopy, infrared photometry, and radio continuum data

We present and discuss broadband infrared photometry in the 1-100 micrometer wavelength range, optical spectroscopy, and radio continuum observations of a sample of IRAS galaxies with unusual spectral energy distributions that peak near 60 micrometers. For inclusion in this sample of '60 PKs', the galaxies must have satisfied the following criteria: IRAS flux ratios f(sub 60)/f(sub 100) greater than 1 and 1 less than f(sub 60)/f(sub 25) less than 4, and galactic latitude absolute value of b greater than 10 deg. In this paper, which is the first of a series, we show that the 60PKs are relatively scarce objects that represent about 2% of the spatial density of 60 micrometer-selected galaxies in the range L(60 micrometers) = 10(exp 9) to 10(exp 12) solar luminosity, but have a far-infrared luminosity function of nearly identical shape. They are detected up to redshifts of 0.2. Besides having the usual high percentage of active galaxies (approximately 30% H II-region like, 50% Seyfert 2, 10% Seyfert 1, 10% unknown) associated with a flat 25 to 60 micrometer spectral index, the sample also includes most of the galaxies that have been found to have a dust-obscured broadline region. We show that the additional f(sub 60)/f(sub 100) greater than 1 constraint selects galaxies with dust that is more centrally concentrated and exposed to a more intense radiation field than in most other IRAS galaxies. In particular, the cirrus component of the far-infrared radiation, which is typically the dominant contributor to the 100 micrometer emission from spiral galaxies, is negligible or missing. This is consistent with the fact that the most distinctive optical signature of 60PKs is the absence of spiral structure: they tend to be peculiar and/or amorphous objects.

Lubrication of Nitinol 60

The mechanical properties of Nitinol 60, 60 wt% Ni, 40 wt% Ti (55 at.% Ni, 45 at.% Ti) are sufficiently attractive to warrant its consideration as a lubricated triboelement. Triboelements are always run lubricated. The ability to lubricate Nitinol 60 by the oils usually used on spacecraft mechanisms--Pennzane 2001A, Krytox 143AC and Castrol 815Z--was experimentally determined. These oils were run in the boundary lubrication regime for Nitinol 60 balls running against Nitinol 60 counterfaces in the vacuum spiral orbit tribometer. Test results consisting of the coefficient of friction versus time (friction traces) and relative degradation rates of the oils are presented. Contrary to the inability to successfully lubricate other metal alloys with high titanium content, it was found that Nitinol 60 is able to be lubricated by these oils. Overall, the results presented here indicate that Nitinol 60 is a credible candidate material for bearing applications.

Photoemission from hybrid states of Cl@C 60 before and after a stabilizing charge transfer

Photoionization calculations of the endofullerene molecule Cl@C 60 with an open-shell chlorine atom are performed in the linear response density functional theory based on a spherical jellium model of C 60 . Cross sections for atom–fullerene hybrid photoemission studied show the effects of the hybridization symmetry, the giant plasmon and the molecular cavity. Comparisons with the results of Ar@C 60 provide insights into the role of a shell-closing electron and its influence on the dynamics. The results for Cl@C 60 are further compared with those of a more stable configuration that results after a C 60 electron transfers to Cl forming Cl–@${{\text{C}}_{60}}^{+}$. This comparison reveals noticeable differences in the ionization properties of the antibonding hybrid state while the bonding hybrid remains nearly unaltered showing a magnification covering the entire giant plasmon energy range. Furthermore, these predictions should raise interest in probing the molecular configuration using photoelectron spectroscopy.

Experimental studies on photoabsorption by endohedral fullerene ions with a focus on Xe@C 60 + confinement resonances

A brief overview on the status of experimental investigations into photoionization and fragmentation of fullerenes and endohedral fullerenes by absorption of a single short-wavelength photon is presented. The focus of this paper is on the endohedral Xe@C 60 + molecular ion in which a xenon atom is centrally encapsulated inside a C$^{+}_{60}$ fullerene cage. Confinement resonances that result from the interference of Xe photoelectron matter waves emerging from the C$^{+}_{60}$ cavity were studied by exposing Xe@C 60 + ions to synchrotron radiation of 60 to 150 eV energy which is the region of the well-known giant atomic Xe 4d excitation resonance. Photoions Xe@C n q+ (with final charge states q = 2,3,4 of the product ions and numbers of carbon atoms left in the cage) were recorded as a function of photon energy and cross sections for the individual reaction channels were determined. In addition to previous work, new final channels (q = 2; n = 60, 58 and q = 4; n = 58, 56) were observed, and thus, about 70% of the oscillator strength expected for the encapsulated Xe atom in the investigated energy range could be recovered. The present results establish the first and, so far, only conclusive experimental observation of confinement resonances in an endohedral fullerene. The data are in remarkable agreement with relativistic R-matrix calculations that accompanied the previous experimental work.
