Ferrimagnetism in EuFe 4 As 12 revealed by 153 Eu NMR and 75 As NQR measurements

Filled skutterudite compound EuFe 4 As 12 shows the highest magnetic ordering temperature of T C =154K among Eu-based skutterudite compounds, but its magnetic ground state has not been determined yet. In this study, we performed 153 Eu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and 75 As nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on EuFe 4 As 12 to reveal its magnetic ground state as well as the physical properties from a microscopic point of view. From the temperature and magnetic field dependence of 153 Eu NMR spectrum in the magnetically ordered state, we found that the Eu ions are in Eu 2+ state with a nearly 7 μB corresponding to S=7/2 spins. Combined with the magnetization measurements, which show the reduced saturation moments of 4.5 μB/f.u., we determined the ground magnetic structure in EuFe 4 As 12 to be ferrimagnetic where the Eu 2+ 4f and the Fe 3d ordered moments are ferromagnetically aligned in each sublattice but the moments between the sublattices are antiferromagnetically aligned. We also found the local distortion at the Eu site from the cubic symmetry in the magnetically ordered state. The relationship between the rattling motion of Eu atoms and the local symmetry of the Eu ions is discussed. From the 75 As NQR nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time measurements as well as 153 Eu NMR measurements, we found that the 4f electrons of the Eu ions are well described by the local moment picture in both the magnetic and paramagnetic metallic states.

Non-LTE analysis of extremely helium-rich stars. The hot sdO stars LSE 153, 259 and 263

Results of a non-LTE fine analysis based mainly on high-resolution CASPEC spectra for three extremely helium-rich sdO stars are discussed in order to explain hydrogen deficiency in single stars. High temperature (Teff = 70,000 to 75,000 K) and a position in the log Teff - log g diagram were found close to the Eddington limit. Various abundance estimates are derived for hydrogen (upper limits only), carbon, nitrogen, and magnesium. Hydrogen is reduced to less than 10 percent by number in LSE 153 and LSE 263, and to less than 5 percent in LSE 259. The hydrogen deficiency is accompanied by nitrogen- and carbon-enrichment in LSE 153 and LSE 259 only. In LSE 263, carbon is depleted by about 1 dex. Stellar masses obtained by assuming that a core mass-luminosity relation holds for these stars, were found to be in the range 0.6-0.9 solar mass, yielding luminosities log L/L:solar = 3.7-4.5. Two of the program stars (LSE 153 and 259) appear to be possible successors of the R CrB and helium B stars, whereas the third star (LSE 263) displays a much lower carbon content in its photosphere making it an exceptional case among the known hydrogen deficient stars.

Magnetic detwinning and biquadratic magnetic interaction in EuFe 2 As 2 revealed by 153 Eu NMR

In the nematic state of iron-based superconductors, twin formation often obscures the intrinsic, anisotropic, in-plane physical properties. Relatively high in-plane external magnetic fields H ext greater than the typical laboratory-scale magnetic fields 10–15 T are usually required to completely detwin a sample. However, recently a very small in-plane H ext ~ 0.1 T was found to be sufficient for detwinning the nematic domains in EuFe 2 As 2 . To explain this behavior, a microscopic theory based on biquadratic magnetic interactions between the Eu and Fe spins has been proposed. In this paper, using 153 Eu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements below the Eu 2+ ordering temperature, we show experimental evidence of the detwinning under small in-plane H ext . Our NMR study also reveals the evolution of the angles between the Eu and Fe spins during the detwinning process, which provides experimental evidence for the existence of biquadratic coupling in the system.

Improved Cross Sections From Group T-2 For 11 B, 151 Eu, 153 Eu, and 165 Ho

Group T-2 has recently completed neutron-induced cross-section evaluations for 11 B, 151 Eu, 153 Eu, and 165 Ho. Evaluations for the latter three isotopes are described in Ref. 1. We have prepared cross-section tables based on the new evaluations for use in C-Division deterministic and Monte Carlo codes. Before describing how to access the new data for your calculations, we will compare some characteristics of the new data with previously available data. ZAID identifiers for the new and old data are listed in Table I, along with the source of the old data.

The mass of hot, shocked CO in Orion - First observations of the J = 17-J = 16 transition at 153 microns

Observations of the Kleinmann-Low Nebula in Orion detected the J = 17-J = 16 transition of CO at 153 microns and at a flux level of 7 x 10 to the -17th W/sq cm. The total mass of hot (not less than about 750 K) carbon monoxide in the nebula is estimated at 8 x 10 to the 30th g, and the total hydrogen mass at this temperature is assessed to be about 1.5 solar masses. A CO column density of about 4 x 10 to the 17th per sq cm is derived for the region, which agrees with those predictions made by Storey et al. (1981), and an apparent deficit of oxygen in the nebula is discussed.

The calibration of photographic and spectroscopic films: The response of 2aO film to small dosages of alpha particles from 3/10th's rad to 8 rads at energy levels 153 MeV, 79 MeV and 47 MeV

The 2aO film, pre-exposed to a series of neutral density filters which on development under standard conditions will produce the standard H-D curve for that film, were then exposed to Alpha paricles with a dose range of 3/10ths rads to 8 rads while varying the energy of the particles using 153 MeV, 70 MeV, and 47 MeV, respectively. An analysis of the film shows that the 3/10th rad dose produces the lowest optical density changes at 70 MeV and 47 MeV. While the optical density readings for the darker patterns seem to oscillate and decrease when exposed to radiation dosages of 3/10th rads to 8 rads.

A 153 day periodicity in the occurrence of solar flares producing energetic interplanetary electrons

The occurrence times of energetic (above 10 MeV) solar flare electron events observed on board the ISEE 3 spacecraft during the years 1978-1982 have been examined; strong evidence is found for a periodicity of 153 + or - 2 days, confirming the discovery of a periodicity in the occurrence of solar flares producing X-rays and gamma rays. The Rayleigh test for periodicity is applied to obtain a probability of less than 10 to the -6th that the times of the electron flares were drawn from a uniform distribution.

Low density of neutral hydrogen and helium in the local interstellar medium: Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer photometry of the Lyman continuum of the hot white dwarfs MCT 0501-2858, MCT 0455-2812, HZ 43, and GD 153

The first comprehensive sky survey of the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral range performed by the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) has uncovered a handful of very bright sources at wavelengths longer than the He I 504 A photoionization edge. Among these objects are four white dwarfs with exceptionally low interstellar medium (ISM) column densities along the line of sight. Analysis of EUV photometry of the He-rich DO white dwarf MCT 0501-2858 and the H-rich DA white dwarf MCT 0455-2812 along one line of sight and of the DA white dwarfs HZ 43 and GD 153 near the north Galactic pole indicates that the overall minimum column density of the neutral material centered on the Sun is N(H I) = 0.5-1.0 x 10(exp 18)/sq cm. In the case of MCT 0501-2858, EUV photometric measurements provide a clear constraint to the effective temperature (60,000-70,000 K). Given these neutral hydrogen columns, the actual contribution to the density of neutral species from the immediate solar environment (the 'local fluff') would only cover a distance of approximately equals 2-3 pc (assuming an average density n(H I) = 0.1/cu cm) leaving these lines of sight almost entirely within the hot phase of the ISM. A preliminary examination of the complete EUVE long-wavelength survey indicates that these lines of sight are exceptional and set a minimum column density in the solar environment.

Absorption by H2O and H2O-N2 mixtures at 153 GHz

New experimental data on and a theoretical analysis of the absorption coefficient at 153 GHz are presented for pure water vapor and water vapor-nitrogen mixtures. This frequency is 30 GHz lower than the resonant frequency of the nearest strong water line (183 GHz) and complements our previous measurements at 213 GHz. The pressure dependence is observed to be quadratic in the case of pure water vapor, while in the case of mixtures there are both linear and quadratic density components. By fitting our experimental data taken at several temperatures we have obtained the temperature dependence of the absorption. Our experimental data are compared to several theoretical models with and without a continuum contribution, and we find that none of the models is in very good agreement with the data; in the case of pure water vapor, the continuum contribution calculated using the recent theoretical absorption gives the best results. In general, the agreement between the data and the various models is less satisfactory than found previously in the high-frequency wing. The anisotropy in the observed absorption differs from that currently used in atmospheric models.

Temperature-dependent deformation behavior of a CuZr-based bulk metallic glass composite

In this study, the effect of cryogenic testing temperatures on the deformation behavior of a CuZr-based bulk metallic glass composite (BMGC) has been investigated using in situ high energy X-ray diffraction. The yield strength and work-hardenability of the studied BMGC show an increasing trend from 298 K to 153 K. A higher yield strength at a lower temperature can be attributed to the larger difference in the volume shrinkage between the crystalline phase and the amorphous matrix. The increasing martensitic transformation degree of the crystalline phase from 298 K to 153 K results in the enhanced work-hardenability. These results lead to a better understanding of the temperature dependence of phase-transformation induced plasticity in CuZr-based BMGCs. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Light- and Chemical-Doping-Induced Magnetic Behavior of Eu Molecular Systems

Variable temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (VT-EPR) was used to investigate the role of the environment and oxidation states of several coordinated Eu compounds. We find that while Eu(III) chelating complexes are diamagnetic, simple chemical reduction results in the formation of paramagnetic species. In agreement with the distorted D 3h symmetry of Eu molecular complexes investigated in this study, the EPR spectrum of reduced complexes showed axially symmetric signals (g ⊥ = 2.001 and g ∥ = 1.994) that were successfully simulated with two Eu isotopes with nuclear spin 5/2 ( 151 Eu and 153 Eu with 48% and 52% natural abundance, respectively) and nuclear g-factors 151 Eu/ 153 Eu = 2.27. Illumination of water-soluble complex Eu(dipic) 3 at 4 K led to the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) that resulted in the formation of Eu(II) in a rhombic environment (g x = 2.006, g y = 1.995, g z = 1.988). The existence of LMCT affects the luminescence of Eu(dipic) 3 , and pre-reduction of the complex to Eu(II)(dipic) 3 reversibly reduces red luminescence with the appearance of a weak CT blue luminescence. Furthermore, encapsulation of a large portion of the dipic ligand with Cucurbit[7]uril, a pumpkin-shaped macrocycle, inhibited ligand-to-metal charge transfer, preventing the formation of Eu(II) upon illumination.

Polarization and variability of compact sources measured in Planck time-ordered data

This paper introduces a new Planck Catalog of Polarized and Variable Compact Sources (PCCS-PV) comprising 153 sources, the majority of which are extragalactic. The data include both the total flux density and linear polarization measured by Planck with frequency coverage from 30 to 353 GHz, and temporal spacing ranging from days to years. We classify most sources as beamed, extragalactic radio sources; the catalog also includes several radio galaxies, Seyfert galaxies, and Galactic and Magellanic Cloud sources, including H II regions and planetary nebulae. An advanced extraction method applied directly to the multifrequency Planck time-ordered data, rather than the mission sky maps, was developed to allow an assessment of the variability of polarized sources. Our analysis of the time-ordered data from the Planck mission, tod2flux, allowed us to catalog the time-varying emission and polarization properties for these sources at the full range of polarized frequencies employed by Planck, 30-353 GHz. PCCS-PV provides the time-and frequency-dependent, polarized flux densities for all 153 sources. To illustrate some potential applications of the PCCS-PV, we conducted preliminary comparisons of our measurements of selected sources with published data from other astronomical instruments. In summary, we find general agreement between the Planck and the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) polarization measurements as well as with the Metsähovi 37 GHz values at closely similar epochs. Here, these combined measurements also show the value of PCCS-PV results and the PCCS2 catalog for filling in missing spectral (or temporal) coverage and helping to define the spectral energy distributions of extragalactic sources. In turn, these results provide useful clues as to the physical properties of the sources.
