Memory and rejuvenation in glassy systems

Here, the memory effect in a single crystal spin glass (Cu 0.92 Mn 0.08 ) has been measured using 1 Hz ac susceptibility measurements over a reduced temperature range of 0.4 - 0.7 T g and a model of the memory effect has been developed. A double-waiting-time protocol is carried out where the spin glass is first allowed to age at a temperature below T g , T w$_{1}$ , followed by a second aging 4 K lower, T w$_{2}$ . The 4 K separation is sufficient to ensure rejuvenation has occurred. The model is based on calculating overlaps between the growth of the correlation lengths at the two temperatures. It accounts for the absolute magnitude of the memory effect as a function of both waiting times and temperatures. The data can be explained by the memory loss being a function of the relative change in the correlated volume at the first waiting temperature due to growth in the correlations at the second waiting temperature.

Structure and magnetism of the triangular lattice material YbBO 3

Abstract YbBO 3 is a member of the orthoborate family of materials which contains a triangular arrangement of Yb 3+ ions. Here we study the physical properties of YbBO 3 with neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, specific heat, and ac susceptibility measurements. The neutron diffraction measurements confirm that our samples of YbBO 3 crystallize in the monoclinic space group C 2 / c (#15) which contains two crystallographically distinct Yb 3+ sites decorating a slightly distorted triangular lattice. Heat capacity and ac susceptibility measurements indicate a potential transition to magnetic order at 0.4 K. In agreement with these observations, neutron diffraction measurements at 0.044 K observe magnetic Bragg peaks which can be indexed by a propagation vector of (0 0 1). Although determining a unique spin configuration corresponding to the observed magnetic Bragg peaks is not possible, model refinements indicate that the ordered moments are likely in the range of 0.4–0.9 μ B and, notably, require moments on both Yb sites. In addition to the magnetic Bragg peaks, diffuse scattering at low Q is observed indicating that the transition does not correspond to complete long range magnetic order. The two-site picture for YbBO 3 is further evidenced by the number of crystal field excitations observed by inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Together these results show that YbBO 3 is a two-site triangular lattice material with signatures of long-range order as well as shorter ranged spin correlations.

Candidate spin-liquid ground state in CsNdSe 2 with an effective spin-1/2 triangular lattice

Rare-earth-based triangular lattice materials are extremely attractive for studying unconventional magnetism. Here, we report the magnetic properties of layered CsNdSe 2 based on direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) susceptibility measurements down to 0.04 K. While the AC susceptibility at the zero DC field shows a broad hump below 0.5 K, there is no sign of any long-range magnetic ordering. Quantitative analysis of the DC magnetic susceptibility gives the negative Curie-Weiss (CW) temperature θ CW < 0 in all directions, indicating antiferromagnetic interaction between Nd ions. Of particular interest is the low temperature magnetic susceptibility, which reflects the effective spin-1/2 state with $\theta^a_{\text {cw}}/\theta^c_{\text {cw}}$ > 3. The estimated exchange interactions are J a /k B = 1.42 K (in-plane) and J c /k B = 0.44 K (out-of-plane), pointing to the anisotropic magnetism. First-principles calculations that include spin-orbit coupling and Coulomb correlations reveal multiple states with zero net magnetization for CsNdSe 2 . Both experiment and simulation strongly suggest CsNdSe 2 has the spin liquid ground state with effective spin-1/2. Application of a magnetic field can induce long-range antiferromagnetic ordering with the maximum transition temperature around 0.3 K, in further support of the zero-field spin liquid state.

Low-temperature domain-wall freezing and nonequilibrium dynamics in the transverse-field Ising model material CoNb 2 O 6

CoNb 2 O 6 is a rare realization of the transverse-field Ising model, making it a useful tool for studying both equilibrium and nonequilibrium many-body quantum physics. Despite a large body of work dedicated to characterizing this material, details of the ordered states in the presence of relatively weak transverse fields have not been discussed in detail. Here, we present a detailed study of CoNb 2 O 6 via ac susceptibility measurements in order to further characterize its low-temperature behavior in the presence of a transverse field. Specifically, we call attention to an unconventional freezing transition in zero field below T F = 1.2 K, occurring within the well-known commensurate antiferromagnetic (CAFM) state that onsets at T N2 = 1.9 K. We performed a series of transverse-field quenches into this frozen state, which resulted in a slowly relaxing susceptibility, χ' (t), that followed a logarithmic decay within the time range measured. Additionally, we discuss the frozen state in the context of the freezing of previously discussed “free” chains arising from domain walls between the four degenerate sublattices of the CAFM state. We also attempted to observe Kibble-Zurek scaling by quenching the transverse field into the frozen state at different rates. This produced a null result; the behavior can be fully explained by coarsening of domains over the time scale of the quenches. The absence of a clear Kibble-Zurek scaling is itself surprising, given the proposed ubiquity of the phenomenon for general second-order phase transitions.

Superconductivity in 2-2-3 Y2Ba2Cu3O(sub 8+ delta)

Researchers synthesized a new high T(sub c) 2-2-3 superconductor (Y2Ba2Cu3O8+delta) by a special preparation technique and characterized it by ac-susceptibility measurements. Diamagnetism and Meissner effect sets in at low fields and superconducting transition onsets at 90 K. The systematic investigation of the real and imaginary components of ac-susceptibility as a function of temperature and applied ac magnetic field reveals that the magnetic behavior is that of a granular type superconductor.

Luminescent and Magnetic Tb-MOF Flakes Deposited on Silicon

The synthesis of a terbium-based 2D metal–organic framework (MOF), of formula [Tb(MeCOO)(PhCOO) 2 ] (1), a crystalline material formed by neutral nanosheets held together by Van der Waals interactions, is presented. The material can be easily exfoliated by sonication and deposited onto different substrates. Uniform distributions of Tb-2D MOF flakes onto silicon were obtained by spin-coating. We report the luminescent and magnetic properties of the deposited flakes compared with those of the bulk. Complex 1 is luminescent in the visible and has a sizeable quantum yield of QY = 61% upon excitation at 280 nm. Photoluminescence measurements performed using a micro-Raman set up allowed us to characterize the luminescent spectra of individual flakes on silicon. Magnetization measurements of flakes-on-silicon with the applied magnetic field in-plane and out-of-plane display anisotropy. Ac susceptibility measurements show that 1 in bulk exhibits field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetization through two relaxation paths and the slowest one, with a relaxation time of τ lf ≈ 0.5 s, is assigned to a direct process mechanism. The reported exfoliation of lanthanide 2D-MOFs onto substrates is an attractive approach for the development of multifunctional materials and devices for different applications.

Disorder-induced spin excitation continuum and spin-glass ground state in the inverse spinel CuGa 2 O 4

Spinel-structured compounds serve as prototypical examples of highly frustrated systems and are promising candidates for realizing the long-sought quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. However, structural disorder is inevitable in many real QSL candidates and its impact remains a topic of intense debate. In this work, we conduct comprehensive investigations on CuGa 2 ⁢ O 4 , a spinel compound with significant structural disorder, focusing on its thermodynamic properties and spectroscopic behaviors. No long-range magnetic order is observed down to ∼80 mK, as evidenced by magnetic susceptibility, specific-heat, and elastic neutron scattering measurements. More intriguingly, inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal a broad gapless continuum of magnetic excitations around the Brillouin zone boundary, resembling the magnetic excitation spectra expected for a QSL. Nevertheless, a spin-freezing transition at 𝑇 f ≈ 0.88 K is identified from the cusp in the dc susceptibility curves, where a bifurcation between zero-field-cooling and field-cooling curves occurs. Furthermore, ac susceptibility measurements show a peak close to 𝑇 f at low frequency, which shifts to higher temperature with increasing frequency. These results show that CuGa 2 ⁢ O 4 has a spin-glass ground state, consistent with the establishment of short-range order inferred from the specific-heat measurements. Collectively, these results illustrate the crucial role of disorder in defining the excitation spectrum out of the disordered ground state. Furthermore, our findings shed light onto the broader class of 𝐴⁢𝐵 2 ⁢O 4 spinels and advance our understanding of the spin dynamics in magnetically disordered systems.

Investigation of experimental signatures of spin glass transition temperature

We present a series of temperature and field-dependent magnetization studies of large single-crystal spin glass samples, focusing on both field-cooled (FC) and zero-field-cooled (ZFC) magnetization studies, as well as ac susceptibility measurements. Using the above experimental techniques we aim to understand the nature of spin glass transition in presence of a field, a key factor in understanding the properties of these systems. Building on previous studies that have explored magnetic signatures indicative of spin glass transitions, our research employs a systematic approach to refine the identification of this transition temperature. Through static and dynamic measurements, we aim to shed light on the open issues regarding the key markers of spin glass transitions, enhancing our understanding of these complex systems.

Sample Dependence of Magnetism in the Next-Generation Cathode Material LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2

We present a structural and magnetic study of two batches of polycrystalline LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (commonly known as Li NMC 811), a Ni-rich Li ion battery cathode material, using elemental analysis, X-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetometry, and polarized neutron scattering measurements. We find that the samples, labeled S1 and S2, have the composition Li 1–x Ni 0.9+x–y Mn y Co 0.1 O 2 , with x = 0.025(2), y = 0.120(2) for S1 and x = 0.002(2), y = 0.094(2) for S2, corresponding to different concentrations of magnetic ions and excess Ni 2+ in the Li + layers. Both samples show a peak in the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) dc susceptibility at 8.0(2) K, but the temperature at which the ZFC and FC (field-cooled) curves deviate is substantially different: 64(2) K for S1 and 122(2) K for S2. The ac susceptibility measurements show that the transition for S1 shifts with frequency whereas no such shift is observed for S2 within the resolution of our measurements. Our results demonstrate the sample dependence of magnetic properties in Li NMC 811, consistent with previous reports on the parent material LiNiO 2 . Here, we further establish that a combination of experimental techniques is necessary to accurately determine the chemical composition of next-generation battery materials with multiple cations.

Magnetic ac susceptibility of superconducting Ta films for quantum computing

Recently, breakthroughs were reported in the long coherence time (>0.5 ms) transmon qubit using tantalum films (Ta). Identifying the loss mechanism in Ta films will help further improve the performance of Ta-based superconducting qubits. We report a study of superconducting properties in two sets of Ta films grown on c-cut and a-cut sapphires respectively using contact transport and noncontact magnetic ac susceptibility measurements. Although the resistive transition appears to be similar in both films, we found strikingly different responses in their complex magnetic susceptibilities χ' + iχ'$^{'}$ .χ'$^{'}$ in the c-cut films exhibits a sharp peak at superconducting transition Tc and becomes featureless below Tc indicating a strongly coupled superconducting state. In contrast, χ'$^{'}$ \ in the a-cut films exhibits a broad peak near Tc and a second peak appears below Tc, indicating granular superconductivity behavior. This second peak χ'$^{'}$ in is associated with the hysteresis loss at weak-link-type grain boundaries, which is believed to be a leading source of decoherence in the a-cut Ta films. The derived magnetic loss tangent in the a-cut films is about one order of magnitude higher than in the c-cut films. This study demonstrates that ac susceptibility is an excellent probe for characterizing bulk superconducting properties of the constituent superconducting materials used in qubits.

Magnetic properties of the Ising-like rare earth pyrosilicate: D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7

Ising-like spin-1/2 magnetic materials are of interest for their ready connection to theory, particularly in the context of quantum critical behavior. In this work we report detailed studies of the magnetic properties of a member of the rare earth pyrosilicate family, D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7 , which is known to display a highly anisotropic Ising-like g-tensor and effective spin-1/2 magnetic moments. We used powder neutron diffraction, powder inelastic neutron spectroscopy (INS), and single crystal AC susceptibility to characterize its magnetic properties. Neutron diffraction enabled us to determine the magnetic structure below the known transition temperature (T N = 1.9 K) in zero field, confirming that the magnetic state is a four-sublattice antiferromagnetic structure with two non-collinear Ising axes, as was previously hypothesized. Our powder INS data revealed a gapped excitation at zero field, consistent with anisotropic (possibly Ising) exchange. An applied field of 1 T produces a mode softening, which is consistent with a field-induced second order phase transition. To assess the relevance of D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7 to the transverse field Ising model, we performed AC susceptibility measurements on a single crystal with the magnetic field oriented in the direction transverse to the Ising axes. This revealed a transition at 2.65 T at 0.1 K, a field significantly higher than the mode-softening field observed by powder INS, showing that the field-induced phase transitions are highly field-direction dependent as expected. Furthermore, these measurements suggest that D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7 may be a candidate for further exploration related to the transverse field Ising model.

Planar XY magnetic glass state in the Gd 2 ScNbO 7 pyrochlore

Here a spin glass system with emergent planar ordered spin clusters is investigated. The mixed B-site pyrochlore Gd 2 ScNbO 7 has been synthesized and characterized through a variety of techniques, including x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, muon spin relaxation, heat capacity and neutron scattering. Despite a Curie–Weiss temperature of -3.93(3) K, indicating net antiferromagnetic interactions, no signs of long ranged magnetic ordering are found down to T = 0.3 K. Instead, a disordered magnetic state emerges with a small correlation length of 2.1(1) Å of single tetrahedra. A Reverse Monte Carlo analysis of the polarized neutron scattering data reveals short-range antiferromagnetic order with emergent XY spin ordering similar to the parent pyrochlore compounds. Muon spin relaxation, and AC susceptibility measurements confirm that the magnetization condenses into a glass, with 10 % of the potential entropy missing in the specific heat. This magnetic ground state is similar to what is observed in Gd 2 Sn 2 O 7 just above the ordering temperature, without the eventual long-range ordering at low temperature.

Entropic signatures of the skyrmion lattice phase in MnSi 1- x Al x and Fe 1- y Co y Si

Here, the entropic signatures of magnetic phase transitions in the skyrmion lattice host compounds MnSi 0.962 Al 0.038 and Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 Si were investigated through low field magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements. These data indicate that the conical to skyrmion transition that occurs with the application of magnetic field in MnSi 0.962 Al 0.038 is characterized by clear discontinuity in the magnetic entropy as expected for first order topological phase transition. These same magnetoentropic features are negligibly small in isostructural Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 Si due to the level of chemical substitution related disorder and differences in the spin dynamics (range and timescales). Despite the obvious similarities in the magnetic structures of these two compounds, the transitions between these phases is substantially different indicating a surprising nonuniversality to the magnetic phase transitions in this class of materials.

Local distortion driven magnetic phase switching in pyrochlore Yb 2 ( Ti 1 - x Sn x ) 2 O 7

While it is commonly accepted that the disorder induced by magnetic ion doping in quantum magnets usually generates a rugged free-energy landscape resulting in slow or glassy spin dynamics, the disorder/distortion effects associated with nonmagnetic ion sites doping are still illusive. Here, using AC susceptibility measurements, we show that the mixture of Sn/Ti on the nonmagnetic ion sites of pyrochlore Yb 2 ⁢(Ti 1-x⁢ Sn x ) 2⁢ O 7 induces an antiferromagnetic ground state despite both parent compounds, Yb 2 ⁢Ti 2 ⁢O 7 and Yb 2 ⁢Sn 2⁢ O 7 , order ferromagnetically. Local structure studies through neutron total scattering reveals the local distortion in the nonmagnetic ion sites and its strong correlation with the magnetic phase switching. Further, our study demonstrates the local distortion as induced by the nonmagnetic ion site mixture could be a new path to achieve magnetic phase switching, which has been traditionally obtained by external stimuli such as temperature, magnetic field, pressure, strain, light, etc.

Robust superconductivity intertwined with charge density wave and disorder in Pd-intercalated ErTe 3

Pd-intercalated ErTe 3 is studied as a model system to explore the effect of "intertwined" superconducting and charge density wave (CDW) orders. Despite the common wisdom that superconductivity emerges only when CDW is suppressed, we present data from STM and AC susceptibility measurements that show no direct competition between CDW order and superconductivity. Both coexist over most of the intercalation range, with uniform superconductivity over length scales that exceed the superconducting coherence length. This is despite persisting short-range CDW order and increased scattering from the Pd intercalation. While superconductivity is insensitive to local defects in either of the bi-directional CDWs, vestiges of the Fermi-level distortions are observed in the properties of the superconducting state.

Polaronic transport and thermoelectricity in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals

Here, we carried out a comprehensive study of the structural, electrical transport, thermal, and thermodynamic properties in ferrimagnetic Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals. Mn and Te K -edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction were measured to provide information on the local atomic environment and the average crystal structure. The dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a second-order paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition at T c ~ 74 K, which is further confirmed by the specific heat measurement. Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 exhibits semiconducting behavior along with a large negative magnetoresistance of -87% at T c and a relatively high value of thermopower up to ~10 mV/K at 5 K. Besides the rapidly increasing resistivity ρ(T) and thermopower S(T) below 20 K, the large discrepancy between the activation energy for resistivity E ρ and thermopower E S above 20 K indicates the polaronic transport mechanism. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity κ(T) of Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 is notably rather low, comparable to Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 , and is strongly suppressed in the magnetic field across T c , indicating the presence of strong spin-lattice coupling, also similar with Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 .

Structure and properties of NdCuGa 3 single crystals

Here this manuscript reports on the structural and magnetic properties of NdCuGa 3 using powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), zero-field single crystal neutron diffraction, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. Our XRD on a single crystal specimen of NdCuGa3 confirmed that it crystallizes in the tetragonal BaNiSi 3 -type structure. A magnetic phase transition at T N = 3.3 K is assessed using specific heat and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. No additional anomaly below T N down to 50 mK was detected by performing specific heat measurements. Neutron single crystal diffraction data collected at T = 300 mK confirm the antiferromagnetic phase below T N = 3.3 K with the propagation vector $\vec{\tau}$ = (0.2, 0, 0). Possible magnetic structure solutions of NdCuGa 3 are discussed
