A high-order WENO-limited finite-volume algorithm for atmospheric flow using the ADER-differential transform time discretization

A high-order-accurate weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) limited upwind finite-volume scheme is detailed for the compressible, nonhydrostatic, inviscid Euler equations using an arbitrary derivatives (ADER) time-stepping scheme based on differential transforms (DTs). A second-order-accurate alternating Strang dimensional splitting is compared against multidimensional simulation with 2D transport using solid body rotation of various data. The two were found to give nearly identical accuracy in orthogonal, Cartesian coordinates. Orders of convergence are demonstrated at up to ninth-order accuracy with 2D transport. 1D transport is used to confirm that error decreases monotonically with increasing order of accuracy with WENO limiting even for discontinuous data. Further, WENO limiting always decreased the error compared with simulation without limiting in the L 1 norm. A series of standard 2D compressible nonhydrostatic Euler equation test cases were validated against previous results from literature. Finally, it was demonstrated that increasing the order of accuracy led to better resolved features and increased power for kinetic energy at small wavelengths.

Aggregated Distributed Energy Resources in 2024: The Fundamentals

This report builds upon existing literature and leading examples of ADER pricing and programs in practice to equip commissioners and staff at Public Utilities Commissions (PUCs) and State Energy Offices with the fundamentals of ADER grid services, valuation options, and approaches to compensation. Examples, active debates, and opportunities for further reading are highlighted throughout the document for readers to explore. This report does not seek to outline a specific objective for ADERs in the electricity system nor does it recommend any specific policies for ADERs—it seeks to provide helpful information to inform policymakers’ own ADER strategies and priorities.

Low-dissipation centred schemes for hyperbolic equations in conservative and non-conservative form

We propose a one-parameter family of low-dissipation centred numerical schemes for solving hyperbolic equations in conservative or non-conservative form, using finite volume or discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods. The new schemes spring out from the multi-dimensional FORCE method and are determined by a single parameter α ≥ 1. Given an increasing sequence of real numbers 1 ≤ α 1 < α 2 < . . . < α K , there corresponds a sequence of numerical schemes with stability restriction associated to a decreasing sequence of Courant numbers 1 > c 1 > c 2 > . . . > c K > 0 and a decreasing sequence of corresponding numerical viscosity functions d 1 > d 2 > . . . > d K . For a given Courant number c k ≤ 1 there is a real number α k > 0 and a corresponding stable scheme with minimal numerical viscosity d k . The proposed schemes suit very well the family of high-order discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods and the recently proposed class of ADER-TR schemes, whose orders of accuracy define decreasing sequences of Courant numbers, as the order of accuracy increases. The centred methods of this paper are stable in 2D and 3D in the frame of simultaneous updating formulae, unlike other centred methods, such as 1D FORCE, which are not. Furthermore, the schemes are highly accurate for slowly-moving waves, which is precisely the kind of waves that traditional centred methods smear disastrously. Additional features of the proposed schemes include ease of implementation and applicability to any hyperbolic system either in conservative or non-conservative form. Here, the proposed schemes are analysed and computationally assessed through a suite of test problems for a linear model system, for the Euler equations in one and two space dimensions, and for the Baer-Nunziato equations for compressible two-phase flow.

Arms Control Development Criteria (ACDCs)

The Arms Control Development Criteria (ACDC) have been developed to provide a consistent framework for understanding the readiness of a technology or capability for use in arms control as poten>al components of a verifica>on system. More importantly, they are also intended to serve as a guide for technology developers to beCer address the development needs of a technology from the start of the development process, rather than trying to adapt a technology to arms control aDer it is developed.
