Tutorial - Electric Motor and Integrated Traction Drive Thermal Management

The share of vehicles with fully electric propulsion systems is constantly increasing, and so is their traction drive power. The continuous push to increase power of electric vehicle (EV) traction drives necessitates their efficient cooling to prevent damage to temperature sensitive components of the drive system and achieving higher power outputs in a smaller footprint. With increasing power and power density of electric traction drives, their thermal management is becoming increasingly challenging. This tutorial will provide an overview of thermal management approaches for electric motors and power electronics in EV applications. It will review examples of current industry solutions for power-dense electric motor cooling, power electronics (inverter) cooling, their integration concepts and thermal management system solutions. We'll look at the advantages and challenges of power electronics integration into a single traction drive unit and respective thermal management system concepts. We'll talk about barriers to implementation of a unified thermal management system. The tutorial will also review key aspects of thermal management system design: modeling and simulation using FEA and CFD tools, experimental characterization, and general workflow for thermal management system evaluation.

Commercial EV Charging Infrastructure: Modeling Concepts & Techniques

This presentation offers an overview of key concepts and techniques for modeling global commercial EV charging infrastructure. We begin by comparing the unique needs of commercial vehicles with those of personal vehicles. Next, we delve into network design topics, including phased deployment of public infrastructure, port sharing across and within fleets, power requirements for en-route charging, and strategies for estimating depot charging availability. Finally, we outline the primary steps NREL follows in conducting an EV charging infrastructure needs assessment.

Nov. 2024 EVs@Scale High-Power Charging Deep Dive Technical Meeting

EVs@Scale Lab Consortium is addressing challenges, developing solutions, and enabling technologies for transportation electrification ecosystem. The consortium has five research pillars one of which focuses on high power charging (HPC). HPC pillar brings together hardware and software expertise, capabilities, and facilities related to high power EV charging, charge management, and grid integration. Deep-dive technical meetings are organized twice a year and provides an opportunity for more industry engagement and technical feedback for the national labs throughout the project lifecycle. High-Power Charging pillar has two active projects: (i) Next-Gen Profiles (NGP) and (ii) High-Power Electric Vehicle Charging Hub Integration Platform (eCHIP). This presentation summarizes the progress made in both projects during the past six months focusing on specific topics. There will be two deep-dive technical meetings twice a year. Every deep-dive meeting will focus on different aspects of the project progress.

Annual Technology Baseline (ATB): The 2024 Transportation Update

The Transportation Annual Technology Baseline (ATB) provides detailed cost and performance data, estimates, and assumptions for vehicle and fuel technologies in the United States. It includes current and projected estimates for vehicle technologies as well as fuels, and it details the assumptions used to calculate those costs, such as gas and electricity prices, discount rates, and vehicle miles traveled. The 2024 update added more biofuels pathways to align with pathways used in the Biomass Scenario Model.

Integrating Electric Vehicles into the Grid

Historically, transportation and power systems operated independently, but the rise of electric vehicles is transforming this relationship. In the United States, EV demands are expected to become the largest source of electricity load growth, posing challenges for the grid if not properly managed. This presentation highlights how managed charging strategies and strategic infrastructure deployment can integrate EVs into the power system to enhance grid efficiency and support renewable energy.

Electric Vehicle Basics (French Translation)

Electric vehicles (EVs) use electricity as their primary fuel or to improve the efficiency of conventional vehicle designs. EVs include all-electric vehicles, also referred to as battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). In colloquial references, these vehicles are called electric cars, or simply EVs, even though some of these vehicles still use liquid fuels in conjunction with electricity. EVs are known for providing instant torque and a quiet driver experience. Other types of electric-drive vehicles not covered here include hybrid electric vehicles, which are powered by a conventional engine and an electric motor that uses energy stored in a battery that is charged by regenerative braking, not by plugging in, and fuel cell electric vehicles, which use a propulsion system similar to electric vehicles, where energy stored as hydrogen is converted to electricity by the fuel cell. This is the French translation of NREL/FS-5400-87125.
