Effects of Inlet Area Ratio on Operability of an Axial Air Inlet Rotating Detonation Combustor

This research presents the first results from a new Rotating Detonation Combustor (RDC) design with an axial air inlet and rear-facing angled fuel injection. This design features a variable air inlet that allows for the study of the effect of inlet area ratio on operation and to directly study the coupling between the air plenum and channel of the RDC while minimizing inlet pressure losses. This device maintains the same downstream channel configuration as those previously tested in our laboratory, which includes a 154 mm outer channel diameter and a constant area channel with a width of 7.6 mm. All tests were completed with a downstream hydrogen-air afterburner capable of flashing back in the channel to initiate detonation operation. Initial tests demonstrated successful operation at air mass flow rates from 160 to 770 g/s and equivalence ratios from 0.53 to 1.05 at multiple air inlet to channel area ratios, indicated that sensors installed within the air feed plenum are able to characterize the dynamic characteristics of waves within the detonation channel, and verified that the design goals for this configuration were achieved.

Investigation of X24C-2 10-Stage Axial-Flow Compressor: Effect of Inlet-Air Pressure and Temperature of Performance - 2

Effect of inlet-air pressure and temperature on the performance of the X24-2 10-Stage Axial-Flow Compressor from the X24C-2 turbojet engine was evaluated. Speeds of 80, 89, and 100 percent of equivalent design speed with inlet-air pressures of 6 and 12 inches of mercury absolute and inlet-air temperaures of approximately 538 degrees, 459 degrees, and 419 degrees R ( 79 degrees, 0 degrees, and minus 40 degrees F). Results were compared with prior investigations.

Effect of Inlet-air-flow Distortions on Steady-state Performance of J65-B-3 Turbojet Engine

The effects of inlet-air-flow distortions on the performance of the J65-B-3 turbojet engine were determined over a range of altitudes from 15,000 to 50,000 feet at a flight Mach number of 0.8. Radial inlet-air-flow distortions apparently do not affect the radial distribution of pressure after the first few compressor stages, while the circumferential inlet-air-flow distortion carried completely through the engine. For the distortions investigated, at rated exhaust-gas temperature and fixed-area exhaust-nozzle operation, the primary effect of the radial inlet-air-flow distortions was to reduce the engine air flow, and the primary effect of the circumferential distortion was to impose a temperature profile on the turbine, both resulting in reduction of thrust.

Effect of inlet-air humidity on the formation of oxides of nitrogen in a gas-turbine combustor

Tests were conducted to determine the effect of inlet-air humidity on the formation of oxides of nitrogen from a gas-turbine combustor. Combustor inlet-air temperature ranged from 450 F to 1050 F. The tests were run at a constant pressure of 6 atmospheres and reference Mach number of 0.065. The NO sub x emission index was found to decrease with increasing inlet-air humidity at a constant exponential rate of 19 percent per mass percent water vapor in the air. This decrease of NO sub x emission index with increasing humidity was found to be independent of inlet-air temperature.

Effect of inlet-air humidity, temperature, pressure, and reference Mach number on the formation of oxides of nitrogen in a gas turbine combustor

Tests were conducted to determine the effect of inlet air humidity on the formation of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from a gas turbine combustor. Combustor inlet air temperature ranged from 506 K (450 F) to 838 K (1050 F). The tests were primarily run at a constant pressure of 6 atmospheres and reference Mach number of 0.065. The NOx emission index was found to decrease with increasing inlet air humidity at a constant exponential rate: NOx = NOx0e-19H (where H is the humidity and the subscript 0 denotes the value at zero humidity). the emission index increased exponentially with increasing normalized inlet air temperature to the 1.14 power. Additional tests made to determine the effect of pressure and reference Mach number on NOx showed that the NOx emission index varies directly with pressure to the 0.5 power and inversely with reference Mach number.

Investigation of Effects of Inlet-air Velocity Distortion on Performance of Turbojet Engine

To determine effect of nonuniform inlet-air velocities, a full scale, axial-flow turbojet engine was investigated in Lewis altitude wind tunnel at altitudes from 20,000 to 50,000 feet, 0.21 flight Mach number and corrected engine speeds from 77.3 percent of rated speed to rated speed. Total-pressure variations as large as 103 pounds per square foot in radial direction and 90 pounds per square foot in circumferential direction at 30,000 feet were obtained. With the distortions investigated, net thrust varied between 0.95 and 1.03 of the thrust with uniform inlet-air distribution. Similarly the ratio of specific fuel consumption varied from 1.00 to 1.04. Within the arrange of this investigation the effects of nonuniform inlet velocity were not serious for the engine investigated.

A Low-speed Investigation of an Annular Transonic Air Inlet

Low-speed wind-tunnel tests were conducted as preliminary steps in the study of fuselage-air-inlet arrangements believed suitable for use at transonic speeds. The forward part of the model consisted of an NACA 1-85-050 cowling located at the base of the long protruding fuselage nose designed to maintain substream surface velocities everywhere ahead of the entrance and thereby to avoid or minimize adverse boundary-layer-shock interaction effects up to low supersonic speeds. Pressure-recovery and surface-pressure measurements are presented for the model with three fuselage nose shapes for ranges of angle of attack and inlet-velocity ratio useful for high-speed flight

Improving the performance of a compression ignition engine by directing flow of inlet air

The object of this report is to present the results of tests performed by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics to determine the effect on engine performance of directing the flow of the inlet air to a 5-inch by 7-inch cylinder, solid injection, compression ignition engine, After a few preliminary tests, comparative runs were made at a speed of 1500 r.p.m. with and without directed air flow. It was found that directing the flow of the inlet air toward the fuel injection valve gave steadier engine operation, and an appreciable increase in power, and decreased fuel consumption. The results indicate the possibility of improving the performance of a given type of combustion chamber without changing its shape and with no change in valve timing. They would also seem to prove that directional turbulence, set up before the inlet valve of a four-stroke cycle engine, continues in the engine cylinder throughout the compression stroke.

A Low-speed Investigation of a Fuselage-side Air Inlet for Use at Transonic Flight Speeds

Low-speed pressure-recovery and surface-pressure measurements for a twin fuselage-side air-inlet arrangement intended for use at transonic speeds are presented. The model was developed by adding a canopy and nose-wheel fairing to basic transonic annular inlet studied in TN 2685. The results indicate shape requirements of fuselage nose, canopy, and nose-wheel fairing for maintaining substream surface velocities everywhere ahead of entrance.

Energy and Environmental Analyses of a Solar–Gas Turbine Combined Cycle with Inlet Air Cooling

Sensitivity to ambient air temperatures, consuming a large amount of fuel, and wasting a significant amount of heat dumped into the ambient atmosphere are three major challenges facing gas turbine power plants. This study was conducted to simultaneously solve all three aforementioned GT problems using solar energy and introducing a new configuration that consists of solar preheating and inlet-air-cooling systems. In this study, air was preheated at a combustion chamber inlet using parabolic trough collectors. Then, inlet air to the compressor was cooled by these collectors by operating an absorption cooling cycle. At the design point conditions, this novel proposed integration resulted in a 6.87% relative increase in generated power and a 10.53% relative decrement in fuel consumption, achieving a 19.45% relative increment in the plant’s thermal efficiency. This was accompanied by a reduction of 0.026 kg/s, 4.2 kg/s, and 0.278 kg/s in CO 2 , CO, and NOx emissions, respectively. Finally, spider diagrams were employed to assess the impact of the operating parameters on the overall system’s performance and its associated environmental implications.

Aerodynamic effect of combustor inlet-air pressure on fuel jet atomization

Mean drop diameters were measured with a recently developed scanning radiometer in a study of the atomization of liquid jets injected cross stream in high velocity and high pressure airflows. At constant inlet air pressure, reciprocal mean drop diameter, was correlated with airflow mass velocity. Over a combustor inlet-air pressure range of 1 to 21 atmospheres, the ratio of orifice to mean drop diameter, D(O)/D(M), was correlated with the product of Weber and Reynolds number, WeRe, and with the molecular scale momentum transfer ratio of gravitational to inertial forces.
