One-dimensional transient waves in anisotropic plates.

The stresses and displacements induced in anisotropic plates by short-duration impact line forces are calculated in this paper. The anisotropy is related to the lay-up angles of the fibers of a laminated fiber composite plate. A modification of Mindlin's theory of crystal plates is used. The plate responses are calculated for various fiber lay-up angles and inclination of the line load to the axes of symmetry. Use is made of the computational method of the fast Fourier transform.

Buckling analysis of fully anisotropic plates containing cutouts and elastically restrained edges

An analysis is developed which combines the Ritz and collocation methods for the stability solution of an anisotropic plate with a cutout and elastically restrained edges. Results are presented which agree closely with experiment for isotropic and orthotropic materials. Results are also given for restrained anisotropic plates with circular holes loaded in compression and shear. Difference is noted in the critical buckling loads between displacement and stress loaded panels as hole size is increased. Clamping is also seen to affect the trends in buckling associated with hole size.

Transient motion of thick anisotropic plates

Analyses are developed for the response of anisotropic plate strips to a transient load. The load is taken in the form of a line load of normal stress on the surface or within the body of the strip. The characteristic free vibrational modes of the strip are derived and used to derive the secular equation for this case in closed form and to isolate the mathematical conditions for symmetric and antisymmetric wave mode propagation in completely separate terms. The applied loads are expanded in terms of these normal modes and the response of the plate is obtained by superposition of the appropriate components. Material systems of higher symmetry are contained implicitly in the analysis.

Theoretical buckling loads of boron/aluminum and graphite/resin fiber composite anisotropic plates

Theoretical results are presented for the buckling of anisotropic plates. The plates are subjected to simple and combined in-plane loading. The plates are made from fiber composite material of boron/aluminum or high-modulus graphite/resin. The results are presented in nondimensional form as buckling load against fiber orientation angle for various plate aspect ratios. The results indicate that buckling loads of boron/aluminum plates are independent of fiber direction if the plate aspect ratios are greater than about 1, and moderately dependent when this ratio is less than about 1. In addition, the results indicate that the buckling loads are independent of aspect ratio for plates with aspect ratios greater than about 2. Boron/ aluminum composite plates can resist buckling loads more efficiently than graphite/resin composites on a specific buckling stress basis. The numerical algorithm and a listing of the computer code used to obtain the results are included.

Assessment of computational models for multilayered anisotropic plates

The accuracy of the static and vibrational responses of multilayer anisotropic plates, predicted by eight modeling approaches based on two-dimensional shear-deformation theories, was investigated as a function of the lamination and geometric parameters of the shells. The models used included two-dimensional global approximation models, two-dimensional discrete-layer models, and predictor-corrector models. It is shown that the accuracy of the stress and vibrational responses predicted by the different models is strongly dependent on the significance of the transverse shear deformations.

Analysis of multilayered anisotropic plates - A new look at an old problem

The paper is concerned with the effects of variation in the lamination and geometric parameters of multilayered anisotropic plates on the accuracy of the static and vibrational responses predicted by six modeling approaches based on two-dimensional shear deformation theories. Extensive numerical results are presented for antisymmetrically laminated anisotropic rectangular plates. It is shown that, for most practical problems, the transverse shear deformation has a much more pronounced effect on the response of multilayered composite plates than that of transverse normal strain and stress. It is also shown that the accuracy of the predictions of the first-order deformation theory is strongly dependent on the values of the composite shear correction factors used.

A compressive failure model for anisotropic plates with a cutout under compressive and shear loads

Failure models for the prediction of compressive strength of plates with a hole are investigated. One of the models is based on the strength failure of the fibers that leads to fiber kinking failure. A different version is developed for cases where shear failure of the fibers is expected to be a dominate failure mode. Both models are capable of including the effects of combined shearing and compressive stresses around a hole in a plate and, therefore, are expected to be applicable to plates under combined shearing and compressive loadings, as well as anisotropic plates.

Buckling behavior of long anisotropic plates subjected to combined loads

A parametric study is presented of the buckling behavior of infinitely long symmetrically laminated anisotropic plates subjected to combined loads. The study focuses on the interaction of a subcritical (stable) secondary loading state of constant magnitude and a primary destabilizing load that is increased in magnitude until buckling occurs. The loads, considered in this report are uniform axial compression, pure in-plane bending, transverse tension and compression, and shear. Results are presented that were obtained by using a special purpose nondimensional analysis that is well suited for parametric studies of clamped and simply supported plates. In particular, results are presented for a +/- 45(sub S) graphite-epoxy laminate that is highly anisotropic and representative of a laminate used for spacecraft applications. In addition, generic buckling-design charts are presented for a wide range of nondimensional parameters that are applicable to a broad class of laminate constructions. These results show the general behavioral trends of specially orthotropic plates and the effects of flexural anisotropy on plates subjected to various combined loading conditions. An important finding of the present study is that the effects of flexural anisotropy on the buckling resistance of a plate can be significantly more important for plates subjected to combined loads than for plates subjected to single-component loads.

Buckling Behavior of Long Anisotropic Plates Subjected to Combined Loads

A parametric study of the buckling behavior of infinitely long symmetrically laminated anisotropic plates subjected to combined loads is presented. The study focuses on the interaction of a stable subcritical secondary loading state of constant magnitude and a primary destabilizing load that is increased in magnitude until buckling occurs. The loads considered are uniform axial compression, pure inplane bending, transverse tension and compression, and shear. Results obtained using a special purpose plates with a significant potential for reducing structural nondimensional analysis that is well suited for parametric studies are presented for clamped and simply supported plates. In particular, results are presented for a (+/- 45)(sub s) graphite-epoxy laminate, and generic buckling design charts are presented for a wide range of non-dimensional parameters that are applicable to a broad class of laminate constructions. These results show the effects of flexural orthotropy and flexural anisotropy on plates subjected to various combined loading conditions. An important finding of the present study is that the effect of flexural anisotropy herein as flexural anisotropy on the buckling resistance of a plate can be increased significantly for certain types of combined loads.

Three-dimensional solutions for antisymmetrically laminated anisotropic plates

Analytic three-dimensional elasticity solutions are presented for the stress and free vibration problems of multilayered anisotropic plates. The plates are assumed to have rectangular geometry and antisymmetric lamination with respect to the middle plane. A mixed formulation is used with the fundamental unknowns consisting of the six stress components and the three displacement components of the plate. Each of the plate variables is decomposed into symmetric and antisymmetric components in the thickness direction, and is expressed in terms of a double Fourier series in the Cartesian surface coordinates. Extensive numerical results are presented showing the effects of variation in the lamination and geometric parameters of composite plates on the importance of the transverse stress and strain components.

Finite-element analysis of vibration and flutter of cantilever anisotropic plates

The hybrid stress finite element method is used to study the effects of filament angle and orthotropicity parameter on the vibration and flutter characteristics of cantilevered anisotropic plates. The results indicate a generally strong lack of monotonic dependence on filament angle. Also, the natural frequency in certain cases involving the first few modes, can become relatively insensitive to both filament angle and orthotropicity parameter for a range of filament angle beyond 70 deg. Values of critical dynamic pressure are obtained by a modal approach, in which the mode shapes are obtained by the hybrid stress method. Convergence of the modal method is rather rapid for the configurations analyzed, and a comparison of the method with an exact solution for the case of an isotropic simply supported plate shows that use of six modes gives excellent agreement.

Computer program to compute buckling loads of simply supported anisotropic plates

Program handles several types of composites and several load conditions for each plate, both compressive or tensile membrane loads, and bending-stretching coupling via the concept of reduced bending rigidities. Vibration frequencies of homogeneous or layered anisotropic plates can be calculated by slightly modifying the program.

Buckling Behavior of Long Anisotropic Plates Subjected to Fully Restrained Thermal Expansion

An approach for synthesizing buckling results and behavior for thin balanced and unbalanced symmetric laminates that are subjected to uniform heating or cooling and fully restrained against thermal expansion or contraction is presented. This approach uses a nondimensional analysis for infinitely long, flexurally anisotropic plates that are subjected to combined mechanical loads and is based on useful nondimensional parameters. In addition, stiffness-weighted laminate thermal-expansion parameters are derived that are used to determine critical temperatures in terms of physically intuitive mechanical buckling coefficients, and the effects of membrane orthotropy and membrane anisotropy are included. Many results are presented for some common laminates that are intended to facilitate a structural designer's transition to the use of the generic buckling design curves that are presented in the paper. Several generic buckling design curves are presented that provide physical insight into the buckling response in addition to providing useful design data. Examples are presented that demonstrate the use of the generic design curves. The analysis approach and generic results indicate the effects and characteristics of laminate thermal expansion, membrane orthotropy and anisotropy, and flexural orthotropy and anisotropy in a very general and unifying manner.

Buckling Behavior of Long Anisotropic Plates Subjected to Elastically Restrained Thermal Expansion and Contraction

An approach for synthesizing buckling results for thin balanced and unbalanced symmetric laminates that are subjected to uniform heating or cooling and elastically restrained against thermal expansion or contraction is presented. This approach uses a nondimensional analysis for infinitely long, flexural anisotropic plates that are subjected to combined mechanical loads. In addition, stiffness-weighted laminate thermal-expansion parameters and compliance coefficients are derived that are used to determine critical temperatures in terms of physically intuitive mechanical-buckling coefficients. Many results are presented for some common laminates that are intended to facilitate a structural designer s transition to the use of the generic buckling design curves. Several curves that illustrate the fundamental parameters used in the analysis are presented, for nine contemporary material systems, that provide physical insight into the buckling response in addition to providing useful design data. Examples are presented that demonstrate the use of the generic design curves.
