Elastic-plastic analysis of annular plate problems using NASTRAN

The plate elements of the NASTRAN code are used to analyze two annular plate problems loaded beyond the elastic limit. The first problem is an elastic-plastic annular plate loaded externally by two concentrated forces. The second problem is stressed radially by uniform internal pressure for which an exact analytical solution is available. A comparison of the two approaches together with an assessment of the NASTRAN code is given.

Finite stretching of an annular plate.

The problem of the finite stretching of an annular plate which is bonded to a rigid inclusion at its inner edge is considered. The material is assumed to be isotropic and incompressible with a Mooney-type constitutive law. It is shown that the inclusion of the effect of the transverse normal strain leads to a rapid variation in thickness which is confined to a narrow edge zone. The explicit solutions to the boundary layer equations, which govern the behavior of the plate near the edges, are presented.

Multiple plate hydrostatic viscous damper

A device for damping radial motion of a rotating shaft is described. The damper comprises a series of spaced plates extending in a radial direction. A hydraulic piston is utilized to place a load in these plates. Each annular plate is provided with a suitable hydrostatic bearing geometry on at least one of its faces. This structure provides a high degree of dampening in a rotor case system of turbomachinery in general. The damper is particularly useful in gas turbine engines.

Aerodynamic performance of an annular flat plate airfoil cascade with nonuniform inlet velocity

The demand for increased gas turbine engine efficiency with minimum weight is leading to more complex blading designs, in which viscous and three-dimensional effects are significant. As a result, design procedures based on first principle, experimentally verified, three-dimensional aerodynamic analyses are required. This paper describes a series of experiments performed in a large-scale, subsonic, annular cascade facility specifically designed to provide three-dimensional aerodynamic data suitable for code verification. In particular, the effect of inlet velocity profile on the overall three-dimensional performance of a classical flat plate airfoil cascade is investigated over a range of incidence angles including those resulting in airfoil surface flow separation. All of the data are analyzed and correlated with appropriate nonseparated flow predictions.

Three-dimensional elastic stress and displacement analysis of finite circular geometry solids containing cracks

A seminumerical method is presented for solving a set of coupled partial differential equations subject to mixed and coupled boundary conditions. The use of this method is illustrated by obtaining solutions for two circular geometry and mixed boundary value problems in three-dimensional elasticity. Stress and displacement distributions are calculated in an axisymmetric, circular bar of finite dimensions containing a penny-shaped crack. Approximate results for an annular plate containing internal surface cracks are also presented.

A finite element for thermal stress analysis of shells of revolution

A new finite element is described for performing detailed thermal stress analysis of thin orthotropic shells of revolution. The element provides for temperature loadings which may vary over the surface of the shell as well as through the thickness. In a number of sample calculations, results from the present method are compared with analytical solutions as well as with independent numerical analyses. Such calculations are carried out for two cylinders, a conical frustum, a truncated hemisphere, and an annular plate. Generally, the agreement between the present solution and the other solutions is excellent.

An algebraic turbulence model for turbomachinery

This paper presents a description and verification of RVC3D (rotor viscous code 3-D) which provides a Euler or Navier-Stokes analysis for steady three dimensional flows in turbomachinery. A motivation for this analysis is the calculation of turbine endwall heat transfer. Features of the turbulence model code include thin-layer formulation, Baldwin-Lomax or Cebeci-Smith turbulence models, node-centered finite difference formulation, and explicit four-stage Runge-Kutta time marching scheme. Results for flat plate, annular turbine cascade, turbine endwall heat transfer, and supersonic compressor blade test cases are presented.

Solar energy modulator

A module is described with a receiver having a solar energy acceptance opening and supported by a mounting ring along the optic axis of a parabolic mirror in coaxial alignment for receiving solar energy from the mirror, and a solar flux modulator plate for varying the quantity of solar energy flux received by the acceptance opening of the module. The modulator plate is characterized by an annular, plate-like body, the internal diameter of which is equal to or slightly greater than the diameter of the solar energy acceptance opening of the receiver. Slave cylinders are connected to the modulator plate for supporting the plate for axial displacement along the axis of the mirror, therby shading the opening with respect to solar energy flux reflected from the surface of the mirror to the solar energy acceptance opening.

Rocket injector head

A high number of liquid oxygen and gaseous hydrogen orifices per unit area are provided in an injector head designed to give intimate mixing and more thorough combustion. The injector head comprises a main body portion, a cooperating plate member as a flow chamber for one propellant, a cooperating manifold portion for the second propellant, and an annular end plate for enclosing an annular propellant groove formed around the outer edge of the body. All the openings for one propellant are located at the same angle with respect to a radial plane to permit a short combustion chamber.

Comparison of aerogrids and punched plates for smoothing flow from short annular diffusers

Scale model tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of aerogrids and punched plates in producing flat velocity profiles downstream of short diffusers as would be used between the compressor and combustor of advanced aircraft engines. The diffuser had an area ratio of 4.17 and a length-to-inlet-height ratio of 2.07. The aerogrids tested were plates containing 1123 contoured venturis in parallel with geometric blockages of 83, 74, and 61 percent, respectively. The punched plates contained 1123 sharp-edged orifices with blockages of 58 and 30 percent. The results show that aerogrids, with higher effective blockage for the same pressure loss, are more effective flow-smoothing devices than the punched plates. Also, the overall pressure loss decreases and the exit velocity profile becomes flatter as either type of grid is moved closer to the diffuser exit plane.

Static regenerative fuel cell system for use in space

The cell stack can be operated as a fuel cell stack or as an electrolysis cell stack. The stack consists of a series of alternate fuel cell subassemblies with intervening electrolysis cell subassemblies, and interspersed cooling plates. The water produced and consumed in the two modes of operation migrates between adjacent cell subassemblies. The component plates are annular with a central hydrogen plenum and integral internal oxygen manifolds. No fluid pumps are needed to operate the stack in either mode.
