Dynamic Modeling of Full Converter Adjustable-speed Pumped Storage Hydropower (FC AS-PSH)

Full converter adjustable-speed pumped storage hydropower (FC AS-PSH) technology, as one of advanced-PSH technology, is developed from wind turbine technology. By making the synchronous machine connect to the grid through a full-size converter, FC AS-PSH has a wider adjustment range of speed and a better reactive power control capability compared with a doubly-fed asynchronous generator AS-PSH technology. When it plays as an energy backup in the power system, FC AS-PSH can provide a much faster response than conventional-PSH (C-PSH) which makes this technology provide better ancillary service for a high renewable penetrated system. In this paper, the dynamic modeling of FC AS-PSH is fully studied. We develop a detailed model of this technology in the IEEE 14-bus system based on GE Positive Sequence Load Flow (PSLF) platform. Especially, the first governor model is developed based on the Engineer’s Program Control Language (EPCL) user-defined model in this platform. All operation modes are validated and studied under a system contingency. Besides, comparison cases between FC AS-PSH and C-PSH are studied to show advantages providing from FC AS-PSH when it works with renewable energy.

Frequency Support Enhancement of a Permanent Magnet-Based Adjustable-Speed Pumped Hydropower Plant

When a permanent magnet (PM) -based adjustable-speed pumped storage hydropower (AS-PSH) plant delivers frequency response via the full-scaled power converter, there is power imbalance at the PM generator during the initial stage of the frequency response. This is because the AS-PSH has the different time constants between the power converter and wicket gate in the governor valve. Thus, this imbalance causes a sudden reduction of the rotational speed of the machine during the frequency response. As a result, a voltage deficit arises at the generator terminal in proportion to the decrement in the rotational speed, and thereby it is promising that the current flow at the converter will reach its limit when attempting to inject the commanded active power at a reduced voltage level. Thus, this causes the degradation of the frequency response of the AS-PSH due to the self-demagnetization at a reduced rotational speed. This paper proposes a frequency support scheme of a PM-based AS-PSH to enhance the frequency response by bridging the gap between the different time constants. To achieve this, the frequency support scheme includes a gate opening adjustment in the governor and a dynamic ramp-down in converter controller of the AS-PSH.

Electrical Systems of Pumped Storage Hydropower Plants: Electrical Generation, Machines, Power Electronics, and Power Systems

Adjustable-speed (AS) pumped storage hydropower (PSH) technology has the potential to become a large, consistent contributor to grid stability enabling higher penetrations of wind and solar energy on the future U.S. power system. AS-PSH has high-value characteristics, such as fast response to provide ancillary services to the grid, because it is a power converter interface with the grid (like battery storage), but at the same time it has the energy content large enough to supply both short-term (seconds-to-minutes) and long-term (minutes-to-hours) of energy needs, like more conventional power plants. However, designs must be optimized to lower the capital expenditure (CapEx) and to provide a high-quality grid interface capability (e.g. power quality, ancillary service provider, fault-tolerant or fault ride-through capability), which is a primary factor in the acceptance of AS-PSH into a utility’s generation mix. This CapEx will be greatly affected by the cost savings associated with the civil structure, turbine design, power electronics, control systems, or unique generator designs. A holistic design must be considered to get a full picture of the benefits of the technology proposed. The AS-PSH can be controlled to reduce the impact of transient disturbance on a power system and at the same time can be controlled to minimized subsequent component fatigue and potential oscillation modes within the plant, with the overall impact in reducing the operational expenditures (OpEx).Generating clean power to meet standards such as Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 519 and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 1000-3-2 will be a continuing challenge. For many technology developers, however, improved AS-PSH technologies will become a key component of generator-storage systems of the future given the prospects of increased performance and decreasing costs, and the ever-increasing penetration of renewables (e.g wind power and solar power).

Grid Integration and Market Analysis of Adjustable-Speed Pumped Storage Hydropower: Preprint

Many of the products and services on the electrical grid are currently provided by the conventional power plants, however the response time from conventional power plants is slow compared to hydropower. Similarly, some services such as spinning reserve can be provided by modern renewable generation (wind or PV), however the renewable generation must be curtailed down, thus there is loss of opportunity to harvest clean energy while operating in spinning reserve mode. On the other hand, Adjustable Speed - Pumped Storage Hydropower (AS-PSH) can readily perform these functions while pumping or generating, thus also taking benefit of energy arbitrage which can increase system efficiency. This paper will present results from production cost models showing the effect of adding AS-PSH 50 MW in size to three regional ISO areas which have different ancillary service markets available and different generation mixes. The benefits to these market areas from the ancillary services that can be provided by the AS-PSH and also the load shifting benefits will be measured with cost savings and additional system flexibility in the day-ahead and real-time markets. The main metrics to provide this insight will be savings in the total system production cost and in variable renewable energy curtailment respectively. The simulated operation of the additional hydropower will be analyzed to determine the breakdown of system cost reduction by ancillary services provided and load shifting.

Capability-Coordinated Frequency Control Scheme of a Virtual Power Plant with Renewable Energy Sources

Growing trends in the deployment of inverter-based renewable energy will decrease the inertia and frequency control capability of electric power systems by replacing conventional power plants; thus, the frequency of future power systems might be dynamic. This study proposes a capability-coordinated frequency control (CCFC) scheme of a virtual power plant (VPP) including adjustable-speed pumped storage hydropower (AS-PSH), a wind power plant (WPP), and an energy storage system to support the frequency nadir and reduce the steady-state error of system frequency. The CCFC scheme is based on a hierarchical-control structure in which a CCFC organises the output of local frequency control units. To support the frequency nadir, the CCFC dispatches weighted frequency errors that are proportional to the available headroom of the units; thus, the errors are forwarded separately with a system frequency error to the primary control loop of each unit and thereby arrest the frequency nadir at a higher value than a system without the CCFC. To reduce the steady-state error of the system frequency, the CCFC determines a partial active power command by additionally feeding an integrator of the CCFC with a modified frequency error that depends on the unit with the largest control.

Developing of Quaternary Pumped Storage Hydropower for Dynamic Studies

Quaternary pumped storage hydropower (Q-PSH) technology, as one of the new advanced-PSH technology, has been developed by taking advantage of Conventional-PSH (C-PSH) and Adjustable Speed-PSH (AS-PSH). By combining adjustable-speed pump unit and conventional hydropower turbine unit in the quaternary configuration, Q-PSH has the more competitive capability of providing fast power support in the future high renewable penetrated power system. Acting as energy storage (ES), Q-PSH provides promising power supply to deal with the uncertainty and variability from renewable energy generation. This paper focuses on the dynamic modeling of Q-PSH technology employing full-converter machine and the impact of Q-PSH on the frequency response in a system. The detailed model of Q-PSH is developed and implemented in the IEEE 14-bus system based on GE Positive Sequence Load Flow (PSLF) platform, which captures the dynamic of multiple operation modes, especially hydraulic short-circuit (HSC) operation mode. Several cases are set up to reveal the advantages of Q-PSH technology when power electronic based renewable energy generation is deployed in the system. Sensitivity studies of the controller in pump governor show the impact of parameters in pump response performance. The comparison case illustrates the impact of frequency response provided by the Q-PSH in the system.
