Prospects for Machine Learning and Pulse Shaping on the Scorpius Accelerator [Poster]

The Advanced Sources and Detectors (ASD) project aims to build Scorpius, a multi pulse linear induction accelerator capable of delivering a 1.4 kA electron beam at energies up to 24 MeV. One of the primary advancements of Scorpius is the use of solid state pulsed power (SSPP) to provide flexibility in pulse shaping by independently triggering 45 individual stages stacked in each of 984 line replaceable units (LRU), with 168 LRUs dedicated to the injector. By leveraging circuit modeling of each LRU stage, a machine learning model of the SSPP will be developed to allow for optimization of the pulse shape, including pulse flattening and reflection mitigation. Particle-in-cell simulations of Scorpius have, for example, demonstrated that reducing reflections during multi-pulse operation mitigates beam spill by preventing the production of off-energy electrons between pulses, thereby abating stimulated ion desorption from the wall and beam charge neutralization. This machine learning model will be validated and tuned with experimental data collected from the Scorpius injector and Integrated Test Stand

Brief Overview of the ASD Integrated Test Stand, Activities and Hazards

The ITS venue provides the first opportunity to fully assemble and test the performance of the injector; integrate, assemble and test four modules; measure the severity of the Beam Break-Up instability and perform the first set of beam measurements. Figure 1 shows a high level configuration of the ITS without the system of overhead cable management trays. The final configuration will integrate the injector, 4 modules (12 accelerator cells), 264 SSPP Line Replaceable Units (LRUs), global controls, data acquisition, and a subset of the downstream transport, Table 1. This was chosen because it provides the minimum accelerator cells required to measure the Beam Break-Up (BBU) instability and perform measurements required to validate the ASD beam transport computer models, which are priority measurements for commissioning.

Spot Size Optimization of the Scorpius Accelerator

The Scorpius Linear Induction Accelerator (LIA) is being developed by the Advanced Sources and Diagnostics (ASD) Project and will complement other U1a capabilities by providing a multi-pulse, DARHT-class, flash-radiography capability. Commissioning activities are expected to end in Spring of 2026. All of the diagnostics discussed in this chapter are relevant to LIAs that generate high-current relativistic electron beams, and some diagnostics will also be relevant to other accelerators. The Scorpius Accelerator will be the world’s most advance LIA. Although significant technological advancements have been incorporated throughout the machine, many performance aspects of Scorpius will be similar to those of FXR and DARHT Axis-I and -II. These LIAs offer the same challenges, whether it is suppressing beam instabilities, improving diagnostic accuracy, validating computer simulations and beam tunes, or reducing beam-target interaction effects. However, the ultimate figure of merit is consistent between these LIAs, which is spot size and dose.
