Preliminary scientific rationale for a voyage to a thousand astronomical units

A proposed mission to 1000 astronomical units (TAU) is under study by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Launch date for a TAU mission is likely to be well into the first decade of the 21st century. Study of TAU has focused on the technologies required to carry out this ambitious mission and the identification of preliminary scientific rationale for such a deep space flight. A 1-MW nuclear-powered electric propulsion (NEP) system forms the baseline method for achieving the high velocities required. A solar system escape velocity of 106 km/s is needed to propel the TAU vehicle to 1000 AU in 50 years. The NEP system must accelerate the vehicle for about ten years before this velocity is attained because of the extremely low thrust nature of the xenon-fueled ion engines. At the end of the thrusting phase the NEP system is jettisoned to allow the TAU spacecraft and science experiments to coast out to 1000 AU. Another important technology for TAU is advanced optical communication systems, which are envisioned for transmitting science data to Earth. A 1-m optical telescope combined with a 10-W laser transponder can transmit 20 kbps to a 10-m Earth-orbit-based telescope from 1000 AU.

Disk Evolution Study through Imaging of Nearby Young Stars (DESTINYS): A Panchromatic View of DO Tau’s Complex Kilo-astronomical-unit Environment

While protoplanetary disks are often treated as isolated systems in planet formation models, observations increasingly suggest that vigorous interactions between Class II disks and their environments are not rare. DO Tau is a T Tauri star that has previously been hypothesized to have undergone a close encounter with the HV Tau system. As part of the DESTINYS ESO Large Programme, we present new Very Large Telescope (VLT)/SPHERE polarimetric observations of DO Tau and combine them with archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) scattered-light images and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of CO isotopologues and CS to map a network of complex structures. The SPHERE and ALMA observations show that the circumstellar disk is connected to arms extending out to several hundred astronomical units. HST and ALMA also reveal stream-like structures northeast of DO Tau, some of which are at least several thousand astronomical units long. These streams appear not to be gravitationally bound to DO Tau, and comparisons with previous Herschel far-IR observations suggest that the streams are part of a bridge-like structure connecting DO Tau and HV Tau. We also detect a fainter redshifted counterpart to a previously known blueshifted CO outflow. While some of DO Tau's complex structures could be attributed to a recent disk–disk encounter, they might be explained alternatively by interactions with remnant material from the star formation process. These panchromatic observations of DO Tau highlight the need to contextualize the evolution of Class II disks by examining processes occurring over a wide range of size scales.

TAU - A mission to a thousand astronomical units

The potential of nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) is investigated as the enabling technology for achieving a mission to a thousand astronomical units within 50 years duration. By means of a 1000 AU baseline, the primary objective is to make measurements of distances to the stars in the Galaxy and beyond. In addition, several deep space unique studies in astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, and space plasma physics can be carried out. NEP technology requirements for a mission to 1000 AU are addressed. These technology requirements are compared with current plans for both nuclear space power and ion propulsion research. And finally an example TAU spacecraft system is described.

Interplanetary gas. XVIII - Models and the mean free path of protons at 1 astronomical unit.

Velocity distribution functions of solar-wind protons obtained by the Vela 3 satellites have been analyzed to obtain a microscopic determination of the momentum flux along magnetic field lines with respect to a reference frame moving at the bulk speed. The determination from macroscopic parameters allows the calculation of an effective mean free path for protons at 1 AU which averages 0.06 AU and is relatively independent of solar-wind velocity w. For quiet times when w is from 300 to 400 km/sec, the experimental mean free path is 2 to 3 times smaller than the value from plasma theory. For w greater than 400 km/sec, the experimental value is 10 to 100 times smaller than the theoretical value.
