2022 Accomplishments Report Template

Chromium-doped UO 2 fuels is an industrially important Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) due to the ability to increase the average grain size relative to standard UO 2 . However, there is a lack of knowledge of the thermophysical properties of these doped fuels, which is necessary for accurately modeling the in-pile performance. The work accomplished this FY focused on developing large grain Cr-doped UO 2 pellets as a function of Cr content and subsequently measuring the thermophysical and mechanical properties. The microstructural variations were also investigated to evaluate chromium formation within the microstructure of the sintered pellets.

Employing bacterial microcompartments to create privileged redox pools for biofuel production (Final report: Accomplishments)

Over the award period we made progress on all three objectives. We completed our goal of understanding the impact of cofactor recycling on pathway performance for a propanediol-related pathway (Objective 1) and coupled this data with kinetic metabolic models developed in Objective 3, resulting in several products (4 published research articles, 1 review and 3 other research manuscripts in preparation). We completed half of Objective 2 but found the pathway was incompatible with compartmentalization, which is an important but unexpected result. The details are relayed in the following sections, grouped by objective and task as applicable.

DOE SCGSR Final Report - Project Accomplishments and Additional Materials

The major accomplishments of my project were successfully developing and testing the laser interferometry diagnostic on the Plasma Liner Experiment (PLX) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). This diagnostic helped advance my research by providing a simpler way to obtain electron density measurements of magnetized plasmas compared to other electron density diagnostics such as triple Langmuir probes. The laser used was a 561 nm continuous wave (CW) diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) laser. The PLX laser interferometry diagnostic consists of two parts. These include the launching and receiving sides of the laser diagnostic. The launching side consists of the main laser beam from the DPSS laser being split into five chords(probe beams) and a reference beam which are then directed with fiber optic couplers into fiber optic cables which transmit the probe beamsto the PLX vacuum chamber. The probe beams then pass through the plasma in the chamber and into the receiving side optics where they are again directed through fiber optic cables to be combined with the reference beam. The combined beams are transmitted via multi-mode fiber optic cables to photodiodes to convert the light signals into electrical signals. Before the electrical signals get digitized, they pass through bandpass and low pass filters to eliminate electromagnetic noise and unwanted frequencies. The electrical signals are then processed by IQ demodulators to determine phase angle difference between the probe and reference beams for each chord in order to calculate line-integrated electron density.

Reducing Uncertainty of Fielded Photovoltaic Performance (Final Technical Report)

Improved analysis and reporting of photovoltaic (PV) field performance increases the certainty of owners and financiers that systems will perform as expected. Advanced module technologies (e.g., PERC, HJT, and bifacial) introduce new degradation mechanisms and performance characteristics. The FY19-21 Reducing Uncertainty project leveraged data from the ever-increasing PV fleet to develop models and understanding of the field performance of existing and new technologies. Specifically, we accomplished: report on field performance and degradation rates for high-efficiency silicon (HJT, PERC, IBC) and more conventional technologies; developed automated analysis techniques to quantify system performance (performance ratio, energy yield) and production shortfalls (soiling, degradation, availability); refined the RdTools software toolkit to bring standard, validated analysis techniques to bear on third-party data; analyzed and reported on large datasets including Treasury data and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Utility-Scale dataset to expand the high-quality degradation-rate histogram published previously; worked with industry partners and the DuraMAT data hub to enable private parties to share and aggregate PV production data anonymously, leveraging cloud-based data analysis infrastructure and publishing on US fleet-scale performance comprising over 7GW of operating systems. (https://www.nrel.gov/pv/fleet-performance-data-initiative.html). Through our industry collaborations we have engaged in NDA-covered data transfer with twelve PV fleet owners as of January 2022, with more agreements in negotiation. Our scalable cloud-based time series database contains over 30 billion rows (20TB) of PV time series data, representing over 1700 commercial and utility-scale systems, and over 7.2 GW of DC capacity (Fig 1). Initial field performance results have been distributed in several public reports. Because our fleet composition and data quality methods are continually improving, annual updates to these results are published to our PV Fleet webpage [ https://www.nrel.gov/pv/fleet-performance-data-initiative.html ] and DuraMAT data hub [DOI: 10.21948/1842958]. Another existing dissemination channel used for observed soiling losses is a map we maintain for soiling losses. Additional products developed include a report detailing fleet-wide performance index, availability, startup loss and snow loss factors, a detailed report on the 1603 grant dataset comprising over 100,000 PV systems with failure and performance details and a utility-scale report coauthored with LBNL on 31 GW of system performance.
