Venus Aerial Platforms and Engineering and Scientific Modeling Needs

NASA’s Planetary Science Division is performing an assessment of the state of technology in aerial platforms for exploration of Venus. A key factor in the design of aerial platforms is knowledge of the Venus environment. Modeling the Venus environment, which is the subject of this workshop, is needed for the design of robust aerial platforms that can carry out their missions successfully. The purpose of this paper is to enumerate the kinds of models that are important for both engineering and scientific aspects of the design of an aerial platform mission. The first meeting of the NASA Aerial Platforms study team took place from May 30 to June 2, 2017 and defined the science that can be performed by aerial platforms. A second study meeting is planned for late November 2017. This paper focuses on the current status.

The Mars Aerial Platform (MAP) mission

The Mars Aerial Platform (MAP) mission is a conceptual design for a low-cost, Discovery-class mission whose purpose would be to generate tens of thousands of very-high-resolution (20 cm/pixel) pictures of the martian surface, map the global circulation of the martian atmosphere, and examine the surface and subsurface with ground-penetrating radar, infrared spectroscopy, neutron spectroscopy, and other remote sensing techniques. The data would be acquired by instruments that are carried by balloons flying at a nominal altitude of about 7 km over the martian surface. Because new balloon and microspacecraft technology is now available, the balloon probes could be quite long-lived, lasting hundreds or even thousands of days, producing an immense science harvest in the process. Together with the Mars Environmental Survey (MESUR) surface network science mission, MAP would revolutionize our knowledge of the Red Planet.

Exploration of Mars Using Aerial Platforms

The exploration of the atmosphere of Mars can be conducted using aerial platforms such as balloons and airships. Current research and development efforts at NASA include a lobed pressurized balloon system for the Ultra Long Duration Balloon Program. The capabilities of this system, in regards to pressure, load carrying capability, and duration, are far greater than anything previously flown. This technology can be adapted for use in the atmosphere of Mars.

Multispectral and Thermal Imager Onboard Aerial Platforms Instrument Handbook

The MicaSense Altum imager is an off-the-shelf, synchronized multispectral and thermal camera, combined with a Global Positioning System (GPS) unit and downwelling light sensor (DLS). The Altum takes images of the land surface within its field of view (FOV) across five visible bands and one longwave infrared thermal band. The sensor records the radiance and converts it to digital numbers. Imagery is radiometrically corrected, taking into account the sensor calibration, lens distortions, vignette effects, sun angle, and atmospheric effects (scattering and absorption). The photogrammetry software Agisoft PhotoScan v 1.4 is used to align and stitch the images into a larger composite image using the technique of structure from motion image capture to construct a dense cloud and 3D model of the surface, which is used to produce a digital elevation model of the terrain surveyed and orthomosaic imagery. Land surface leaf area index, albedo, and surface skin temperature are provided for the user. The user can perform raster calculations on the imagery to produce various other vegetative indices, which are used to indicate plant health and land surface characteristics, including Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), surface temperature, and Enhanced_vegetation_index (EVI). This code is provided with the readme file for each data set. The images have a resolution of 20-60 cm/pixel, which are subsampled to 100 cm/pixel.

Development of A Microsampler for Aerial Platform on Collection of Aerosol Particles

A microsampler for aerosol particles was designed and evaluated in the laboratory for dry (no condensed water) and wet (foggy, misty, or rainy) air conditions. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) results suggested a design that provided a higher sampling efficiency with minimal inlet loss. The microsampler was experimentally evaluated using fluorescent Polystyrene Latex (PSL) particles at four nominal sizes. The experimental results at the four PSL particle sizes agree reasonably well with the collection efficiencies predicted by CFD. We found no impacts on the collection efficiency of the microsampler at conditions under 80% Relative Humidity (RH). However, when condensed water exists, significant biases on the collection efficiencies were found suggesting this microsampler should not be used in the condition where there was condensed water in the atmosphere, e.g., foggy, misty, and rainy conditions.

Hardware Implementation of COTS Avionics System on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Platforms

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can serve as low cost and low risk platforms for flight testing in Aeronautics research. The NASA Exploration Aerial Vehicle (EAV) and Experimental Sensor-Controlled Aerial Vehicle (X-SCAV) UAVs were developed in support of control systems research at NASA Ames Research Center. The avionics hardware for both systems has been redesigned and updated, and the structure of the EAV has been further strengthened. Preliminary tests show the avionics operate properly in the new configuration. A linear model for the EAV also was estimated from flight data, and was verified in simulation. These modifications and results prepare the EAV and X-SCAV to be used in a wide variety of flight research projects.
