Learning Behavior of Distribution System Discrete Control Devices for Cyber-Physical Security

Conventional cyber-security intrusion detection systems monitor network traffic for malicious activity and indications that an adversary has gained access to the system. The approach discussed here expands the idea of a traditional intrusion detection system within electrical power systems, specifically power distribution networks, by monitoring the physical behavior of the grid. This is achieved through the use of high-rate distribution Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), alongside SCADA packets analysis, for the purpose of monitoring the behavior of discrete control devices. In this work we present a set of algorithms for passively learning the control logic of voltage regulators and switched capacitor banks. Upon detection of an abnormal operation, the operator is alerted and further action can be taken. Finally, the proposed learning algorithms are validated on both simulated data and on measured PMU data from a utility pilot deployment site.

Operational experience with the new CMS DAQ-Expert

The data acquisition (DAQ) system of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) at CERN reads out the detector at the level-1 trigger accept rate of 100 kHz, assembles events with a bandwidth of 200 GB/s, provides these events to the high level-trigger running on a farm of about 30k cores and records the accepted events. Comprising custom-built and cutting edge commercial hardware and several 1000 instances of software applications, the DAQ system is complex in itself and failures cannot be completely excluded. Moreover, problems in the readout of the detectors,in the first level trigger system or in the high level trigger may provoke anomalous behaviour of the DAQ systemwhich sometimes cannot easily be differentiated from a problem in the DAQ system itself. In order to achieve high data taking efficiency with operators from the entire collaboration and without relying too heavily on the on-call experts, an expert system, the DAQ-Expert, has been developed that can pinpoint the source of most failures and give advice to the shift crew on how to recover in the quickest way. The DAQ-Expert constantly analyzes monitoring data from the DAQ system and the high level trigger by making use of logic modules written in Java that encapsulate the expert knowledge about potential operational problems. The results of the reasoning are presented to the operator in a web-based dashboard, may trigger sound alerts in the control room and are archived for post-mortem analysis - presented in a web-based timeline browser. We present the design of the DAQ-Expert and report on the operational experience since 2017, when it was first put into production.

Autonomous Operations for Advanced Reactors Utilizing Supervisory Control

Automation is a critical tenet of reactor plant operations as reliance on nuclear energy increases. Nuclear power plants require a large workforce which does not scale with output; that is, the cost per megawatt increases as reactor output becomes smaller. The economic viability of advanced reactors, particularly small modular reactors (SMRs) and microreactors, requires a significantly reduced onsite workforce. The logical solution is establishing a systematic process of elimination of reliance on human operators, and to the extent possible, replacing these actions with automated functions. In this paper, we propose a method for such transformation to establish a robust technical basis to enable transition to autonomy. Our method is based on finite state automata (FSA)—also known as finite state machines (FSMs). Relying on this method allows us to exploit the rich set of mathematical proofs available in the field of regular languages. FSA are one of the mathematical tools to model discrete event systems (DES). These properties are applied to produce an automated startup controller for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Research Reactor (MITR). The startup procedure is captured in terms of discrete changes from one state to another while an independent supervisory control system directs the sequence of states and alerts a human in the event of an abnormal operation. First, the design and behavior of the MITR rod control system were modeled in Simulink. Then, the startup procedure was applied to the rod control system and the DES performed a startup by procedurally withdrawing rods to the subcritical position. The simulation also stops rod motion in response to an uncontrollable event and restarts rod motion once the event has been cleared.
