Uranium Casting Pin Dissolution for Multi-element and Si Analysis

The purpose of this special instruction is to establish a standard method for the dissolution of uranium casting materials from FCF or HFEF. The Spent Fuel Treatment program requires the analysis of uranium casting pins in order to determine the level of impurities. The samples are dissolved in a laboratory hood for ICP-MS and ICP-OES analyses. The dissolution of the uranium will require the use of nitric and/or hydrochloric acid, with a trace amount of hydrofluoric acid as a dissolution catalyst. Two dissolution methods are provided to allow for the choice of the final dissolver matrix. A process blank should be performed along with samples.
