GPU-Based Static Data-Flow Analysis for Fast and Scalable Android App Vetting

Many popular vetting tools for Android applications use static code analysis techniques. In particular, Interprocedural Data-Flow Graph (IDFG) construction is the computation at the core of Android static data-flow analysis and consumes most of the analysis time. Many analysis tools use a worklist algorithm, an iterative fixed-point approach, to construct the IDFG. In this paper, we observe that a straightforward GPU parallelization of the worklist algorithm leads to significant underutilization of the GPU resources. We identify four performance bottlenecks, namely, frequent dynamic memory allocations, high branch divergence, workload imbalance, and irregular memory access patterns. Accordingly, we propose GDroid, a GPU-based worklist algorithm implementation with multiple fine-grained optimizations tailored to common characteristics of Android applications. The optimizations considered are: matrix-based data structure, memory access-based node grouping, and worklist merging. Our experimental evaluation, performed on 1000 Android applications, shows that the proposed optimizations are beneficial to performance, and GDroid can achieve up to 128X speedups against a plain GPU implementation.

X-Ray Toolkit Component Classifier Mobile (Android)

The X-Ray Toolkit Component Classifier is a mobile Android application for identifying components using the RECON image recognition algorithm. The application can identify common components within x-ray images such as antennae, batteries, switches and many more. It can be used in conjunction with X-Ray Toolkit Mobile for Android (SCR 2598.0) or as a stand-alone application. Review of Particle Physics

The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 3,200 new measurements from 903 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Most of the 118 reviews are updated, including many that are heavily revised.

Smart Phone Application to Compute Annual Solar Production of One Panel of a Plug-and-Play Solar Appliance (Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-19-00832)

The primary goal of the project is to develop a smart phone application (App) that will be available in both the Apple App Store and the Android store that displays results from the NREL's photovoltaic application, PVWatts Calculator, an application that estimates the energy production and cost of energy of grid-connected PV energy systems, and that will provide quick-response changes based on the orientation of the smart phone by the end user.

Radiation Detection System Integration Using Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Radios

This study describes the application development of multiple-input multiple-output radios to provide persistent mobile ad hoc network (MANET) for the Department of Homeland Security. By using Man Portable Unit (MPU5) fifth generation radios (manufactured by Persistent Systems) with the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK), an Android smartphone geospatial infrastructure and military situational awareness application, the Remote Sensing Laboratory has developed a MANET connectivity to monitor deployed nuclear/radiological search operation assets.

OSCAR-Mike: Why not ATAK?

The Office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD) is evaluating methods to increase the probability that international partners will detect radioactive materials. One proposed method to accomplish this goal is to improve communications within teams operating in challenging environments. The goal of these improvements would be to enable remote monitoring of detection equipment, share data among end users in the field and subject matter experts, and integrate data from radiation detectors with other types of sensors and camera systems. Accomplishing this goal has the potential to improve the capabilities of currently deployed NSDD equipment. During FY 2021, Oak Ridge National Laboratory demonstrated some core and expanded capabilities of the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK), a situational awareness application developed by the US Department of Defense, to enable precision targeting, navigation, and data sharing. During FY 2022, Oak Ridge National Laboratory developed software requirements for an NSDD team awareness kit–based system. The requirements were developed by liaising with NSDD management and subject matter experts to determine NSDD’s needs and by reviewing available software and hardware solutions with US Department of Defense team awareness kit program managers and developers and radiation detection equipment vendors.

Test GammaPix™ Radiation Detection Software with Smartphones

GammaPix™ is a smartphone application that uses smartphone cameras to detect ionizing radiation. Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) evaluated the performance of the software in detecting radioactive materials. For this purpose, a series of tests were conducted at the Radiation Calibration Facility Annex at BNL. The experiments included dose measurements with three types of NIST-traceable calibration sources, 60Co, 241Am, and 137Cs. The recorded results by GammaPix™ were compared with the values measured by calibrated dosimeters to determine the detection thresholds. Several selected models of iPhones and Android cell phones with different pixel sizes and resolution were tested. In this paper, we present the test procedures and discuss the test results.

I Know I'm Right, But Does My Phone?

Transportation is the largest source of green-house gas emissions in the United States. Reducing transportation emissions depends on human travel behavior, which relies on local land use and planning. Travel diaries, consisting of sequences of trips between places for a particular individual, are typically used to instrument human travel behavior. However, these diaries are only as accurate as the underlying methods used to construct them. Travel diary algorithms have been a popular research topic since the advent of GPS tracking surveys. Mode inference algorithms in particular have been well represented in literature. However, these algorithms have typically been validated using prompted recall of pre-segmented trips, which doesn't account for segmentation error, thus disregarding the continuity of mode inference. Furthermore, phone operating systems and applications have adopted battery-conserving techniques, but we are not aware of prior work that has characterized the resulting data collection errors or evaluated procedures to mitigate them. We introduce a framework to evaluate accuracy of trip length computations and mode inference. We develop a temporal alignment procedure in analyzing continuous mode-segmented trajectories for groups of trips. We then apply our framework to evaluate an example set of travel diary algorithms from the open-source OpenPATH travel diary platform against MobilityNet, a public dataset containing information from three artificial timelines that cover 15 different travel modes. Our results show that inference based on an integration with map features results in weighted F_1 scores of 0.60 (iOS) and 0.74 (android). We also show that OpenPATH tends to under count trip length, with mean of signed relative error of -0.0438 on android and -0.0704 on iOS. We hope that other travel diary algorithms will be evaluated using this standardized process, and that the results used to understand and improve the state-of-the-art in this field.
