RMIT AR Android Application Abstract

This summer, I've worked as an intern for IT-C1's Rapid Model Import Tool (RMIT) project under Bill Little. The goal of this project was to develop a mobile application for IT-C1's larger project, RMIT, so that it could be deployed in a convenient way. The current function of RMIT is to import file types that are not normally compatible with the Unity 3D software development engine and make them into files that can be placed into Unity for the specific purpose of viewing CAD models in virtual reality (VR). The mobile application that I worked on uses augmented reality (AR), using the camera on a mobile device, to show virtual models in the real world for the purpose of visualization and understanding. In addition to single-player capabilities, this application will include a multi-player mode so that collaborating engineers can see each other's work on their own devices.Working on this application required many steps. First, I hard to learn a lot about how mobile development is different from desktop development, and what the limitations of augmented reality are at its current state. From there, I was assigned new tasks and goals every two weeks, which included addingground plane and air plane functionality, designing a user interface, adding multi-player capability and allowing the user to manipulate models placed in a scene.

(abstract) Application of Space Technology to NDE at JPL

JPL is responsible for the deep space exploration using spacecraft and telerobotic technologies. Since all its missions are one of a kind and hardware dependent, the NDE requirements are significantly more stringent than the ones for aerospace conventional needs. The multidisciplinary technologies that have been developed at JPL, particularly the ones that were developed for the exploration of Mars, can find applications to a wide variety of NDE applications. A review will be given of the recent JPL NDE activity and it will include several short videos.

(abstract) Applications of Long-wavelength 256x256 GaAs/Al&subx;Ga&sub1-x;As Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector Hand-held Camera

A 9 (micro)m 256x256 hand-held quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) camera has been demonstrated. Excellent imagery, with a noise equivalent differential temperature (NE(gamma)) of 26 mK has been achieved. In this presentation, we discuss the development of this very sensitive long wavelength infrared (LWIR) camera based on a GaAs/AlGaAs QWIP focal plane array, its performance in quantum efficience, NA(gamma), minimum resolvable temperature (MRTD), uniformity, operability, and its applications.

(abstract) Application of the GPS Worldwide Network in the Study of Global Ionospheric Storms

Ionospheric storm dynamics as a response to the geomagnetic storms is a very complicated global process involving many different mechanisms. Studying ionospheric storms will help us to understand the energy coupling process between the Sun and Earth and possibly also to effectively forecast space weather changes. Such a study requires a worldwide monitoring system. The worldwide GPS network, for the first time, makes near real-time global ionospheric TEC measurements a possibility.

(abstract) Application of Neural Networks to Hyperspectral Unmixing

The emergence, in recent years, of hyperspectral sensors provides a tremendous opportunity for advancing the process of detailed and direct remote detection and identification from space of targets or surface materials. Such sensors exploit the uniqueness of the corresponding spectral reflectance signatures, which enables high resolution imaging spectrometer data to be processed on a pixel-by-pixel basis. This has implications both for defense-related applications (e.g., surveillance tasks) and in the civilian domain (e.g., for science applications). The purpose of this talk is to discuss a number of strong arguments that support neural networks as a choice for the generalized analysis (e.g., unmixing) of remotely sensed hyperspectral data.

(abstract) Application of Non-coherent Data Types for Deep Space Navigation

Several options are being examined to reduce the costs of spacecraft and deep space missions. One such option is to fly spacecraft in a non-coherent mode, that is, the spacecraft does not carry a transponder and cannot coherently return a Doppler signal. Historically, such one-way data has not been used as the sole data type due to the instability of the onboard oscillator, the use of S-band frequencies, and the corresponding larger error sources which could not be modeled. However, with the advent of high-speed work stations and more sophisticated modeling ability, the possibility of using one-way data is being re-examined. This paper addresses the navigation performance of various one-way data types for use in interplanetary missions.

Design Study of a Coupled Inner-Stator Magnetically Geared Motor for Electric Aircraft Applications

Abstract- Electric aircraft require high performance and high reliability electric motor drivetrains. A geared electric motor drivetrain will outperform a direct drive motor drivetrain in most applications. Traditional mechanical gearing, however, has mechanical contact-based wear and failure modes that result in added maintenance costs and require an oil lubrication system. Magnetically geared motor drives are a potential technology for electric aircraft applications capable of enabling the benefits of a geared drive without the maintenance, reliability, and lubrication system cost of mechanical gears. In this paper, a topology of magnetically geared motor, an inner-stator magnetically geared motor, is explored to estimate its achievable performance for electric aircraft applications. Optimization results on the topology show that it can achieve greater than 15 Nm/kg specific torque and 96% efficiency at 100 kW of power.

Supercritical Water Oxidation and a Preliminary Concept for Lunar Application

Abstract: Water is a critical resource for crewed space exploration missions and reclamation of aqueous waste streams presents the only long-term viable option. Although early Artemis missions are considering water as part of the payload manifest, it would be extremely advantageous if follow-on missions were supplied—either in total or in part—by a reclamation technology that would operate autonomously between missions. An attractive technology is currently under ongoing research at NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) that employs a Supercritical Water Oxidation (SCWO) process to destroy all hydrocarbons in the waste stream. Testing of an aqueous waste stream simulant, typical of what is generated on the International Space Station (ISS), has shown reductions in Total Organic Carbon (TOC) of greater than 99% with reactor residence times less than 30 s. Recent effort has been directed toward developing a conceptual design based on the current tubular reactor used in the evaluation of the conversion of SCWO. This conceptual design along with the results of recent SCWO conversion experiments will be presented. Recent design enhancements to achieve shorter residence times along with “production simulation” tests will be presented. The diagnostics used in assessing the extent of the waste conversion include a total organic carbon (TOC) analysis, Raman analyses, and measurements of pH, turbidity, and conductivity. Results obtained from the modified reactor configuration will also be compared to those of the Phase I configuration presented in earlier work.

Application of abstract harmonic analysis to the high-speed recognition of images

Methods are constructed for rapidly computing correlation functions using the theory of abstract harmonic analysis. The theory developed includes as a particular case the familiar Fourier transform method for a correlation function which makes it possible to find images which are independent of their translation in the plane. Two examples of the application of the general theory described are the search for images, independent of their rotation and scale, and the search for images which are independent of their translations and rotations in the plane.

Open Architecture Standard for NASA's Software-Defined Space Telecommunications Radio Systems

NASA is developing an architecture standard for software-defined radios used in space- and ground-based platforms to enable commonality among radio developments to enhance capability and services while reducing mission and programmatic risk. Transceivers (or transponders) with functionality primarily defined in software (e.g., firmware) have the ability to change their functional behavior through software alone. This radio architecture standard offers value by employing common waveform software interfaces, method of instantiation, operation, and testing among different compliant hardware and software products. These common interfaces within the architecture abstract application software from the underlying hardware to enable technology insertion independently at either the software or hardware layer. This paper presents the initial Space Telecommunications Radio System (STRS) Architecture for NASA missions to provide the desired software abstraction and flexibility while minimizing the resources necessary to support the architecture.

Cluster-based representation of hydraulic systems

The authors present a technique for structural abstraction applicable to the domain of pressurized hydraulic systems. Valves, when closed, functionally isolate clusters of components; when opened, neighboring clusters are merged. A cluster can only be in the one of two qualitative states-stable, where pressures are equal throughout and no flow occurs, or unstable, where flow from high-pressure source(s) to low-pressure sink(s) occurs. Reasoning in terms of clusters is shown to facilitate the generation and explanation of plans for operating and troubleshooting hydraulic systems.

Pre-Launch Algorithms and Risk Reduction in Support of the Geostationary Lightning Mapper for GOES-R and Beyond

The Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) is a single channel, near-IR optical transient event detector, used to detect, locate and measure total lightning activity over the full-disk as part of a 3-axis stabilized, geostationary weather satellite system. The next generation NOAA Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) series with a planned launch in 2014 will carry a GLM that will provide continuous day and night observations of lightning from the west coast of Africa (GOES-E) to New Zealand (GOES-W) when the constellation is fully operational. The mission objectives for the GLM are to 1) provide continuous,full-disk lightning measurements for storm warning and Nowcasting, 2) provide early warning of tornadic activity, and 3) accumulate a long-term database to track decadal changes of lightning. The GLM owes its heritage to the NASA Lightning Imaging Sensor (1997-Present) and the Optical Transient Detector (1995-2000), which were developed for the Earth Observing System and have produced a combined 13 year data record of global lightning activity. Instrument formulation studies were completed in March 2007 and the implementation phase to develop a prototype model and up to four flight units is expected to begin in latter part of the year. In parallel with the instrument development, a GOES-R Risk Reduction Team and Algorithm Working Group Lightning Applications Team have begun to develop the Level 2B algorithms and applications. Proxy total lightning data from the NASA Lightning Imaging Sensor on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) sate]lite and regional test beds (e.g., Lightning Mapping Arrays in North Alabama and the Washington DC Metropolitan area) are being used to develop the pre-launch algorithms and applications, and also improve our knowledge of thunderstorm initiation and evolution. Real time lightning mapping data provided to selected National Weather Service forecast offices in Southern and Eastern Region are also improving our understanding of the application of these data in the severe storm warning process and help to accelerate the development of the pre-launch algorithms and Nowcasting applications.
