ARIES: NREL Off-Road Decarbonization and Energy Systems Integration Workshop - Challenges and Opportunities

This presentation about ARIES was given at the NREL Off-Road Decarbonization and Energy Systems Integration Workshop - Challenges and Opportunities. ARIES was designed to fill a significant gap: there is no research platform that can support the nation's transition to a decarbonized energy system. ARIES will demonstrate and de-risk a future energy system with more than 50% renewable generation by 2030, that is just, affordable, flexible, clean, secure, resilient, and reliable, even in the off-road transportation sector.

ARIES team achieves major milestone in support of nonproliferation

The Advanced Recovery and Integrated Extraction System (ARIES) Program is a great example of LANL’s Weapons and Global Security programs working together to achieve important nuclear security mission goals. Executed at PF-4, a facility better known for its pit production mission, the ARIES Program is helping the nation meet its nonproliferation commitments by preparing surplus weapons-grade plutonium for final disposition. ARIES recently met a major milestone of producing 1 metric ton of plutonium oxide from material removed from surplus pits. The milestone was celebrated in an awards ceremony at LANL on January 28.

Modeling of H2 Dispersion at ARIES

Hydrogen is a versatile and clean energy carrier that can be produced from various renewable sources such as wind, solar, and hydropower and help decarbonize electricity grids, industry, and transportation. Using the Hydrogen Research Facility under Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems (ARIES) at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Flatirons campus as a test bench, the study examines the feasibility, useability, and value of using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques to model hydrogen dispersion. The ARIES facility was chosen because controlled hydrogen releases can be performed at a rate of 27 kg-H2/hr. Site-specific atmospheric and weather condition data such as wind speed and temperature were used as inputs to the model. The results show statistical distributions and ranges of hydrogen concentrations at locations throughout the domain. Wind conditions are found to significantly impact the release behavior, including the hydrogen cloud's direction and concentrations. At low wind speeds (below 1 mph), hydrogen forms a cloud and at higher wind speeds (> 2-4 mph) hydrogen plume stretches in the direction of wind momentum. From >100 simulations for ARIES site-specific conditions, statistical quantities combined with a clustering algorithm were used to propose sensor location at various elevations from ground.

ARIES: Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems

One of the primary challenges to achieving a clean energy future is closing the gap between ambitions and real-world deployment. To accelerate solutions for a clean energy future, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, developed a visionary research platform called Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems (ARIES). ARIES takes in the full picture - from community energy needs to technology developers and service providers - rather than evaluating clean energy and technologies in isolation. This innovative approach uncovers opportunities and risks in the spaces where energy technologies and sectors - such as transportation, industry, buildings, and the electric grid - meet.

Upgrade and Operation of the ATLAS Radiation Interlock System (ARIS)

ATLAS (the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator Sys-tem) is a superconducting heavy ion accelerator which can accelerate nearly all stable, and some unstable, iso-topes between hydrogen and uranium. Prompt radiation fields from gamma and or neutron are typically below 1 rem/hr at 30 cm, but are permitted up to 300 rem/hr at 30 cm. The original ATLAS Radiation Interlock System (ARIS), hereafter referred to as ARIS 1.0 was installed 30 years ago. While it has been a functional critical safe-ty system, its age has exposed the facility to high risk of temporary shutdown due to failure of obsolete compo-nents. Topics discussed will be architecture, hardware improvements, functional improvements, and operation permitting personnel access to areas with low levels of radiation.

Cold Testing for Characterization of Oxide Feed Impurities in Support of the ARIES Program

The Advanced Recovery and Integrated Extraction System (ARIES) Program converts surplus plutonium metal components into an oxide powder form and packages the material for final disposition. In support of the ARIES program, over a metric ton (MT) of plutonium has been removed from surplus nuclear weapons since 1998 and packaged for long-term storage in 3013 cans. The oxide production rate is anticipated to increase substantially over the next decade in support of dilute and dispose goals. Analytical chemistry data from destructive analysis of the resulting 70+ blend lots to date has been reported for contaminants in the product oxide. Changes in the Pu product specification for Pu oxide product, induced by a different pit mix, the LANL swap program and processing Alternate (non-Pit Pu) Feed Stock (AFS) metals, will affect the level and the mix of these contaminants in the upcoming years. With these changes in feed material, it will be important to provide fast and efficient measurement of elemental impurities in the oxide to be certain that the process is under control and to monitor the anticipated changes from the historical blend lot data. Non-destructive methods need to be evaluated for the characterization of the plutonium oxide product and the quantification of the impurities at the current and anticipated levels. A feasibility study has begun to investigate the applicability of new spectroscopic methods for oxide impurity characterization. To this end, here we describe the preparation of surrogate materials to support these investigations, and the results of a feasibility study investigating the use of LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) to characterize the surrogate materials as calibration standards.

Prompt Gamma Analysis of ARIES Materials and Updates to the 2015 Calibration Equations

Prompt gamma (PG) analysis is a nondestructive, nuclear, elemental analysis technique that uses charged particle reactions to interrogate a sample, and elements present in the sample matrix are identified through the characteristic gamma-rays emitted from the product nuclei in alpha-p and alpha-n nuclear reactions. This technique has been applied to plutonium oxide packaged in over 4,000 individual 3013 containers, and the concentrations of certain light elements were determined from the integrated peak areas based on a calibration that was published previously. This report provides the results for a new population of 3013 containers packaged with oxide materials produced by the conversion of metal by Advanced Recovery and Integrated Extraction System (ARIES) project using the direct metal oxidation (DMO) process and muffle furnaces. New PG and analytical chemistry data collected since 2015 were added to the existing calibration data sets to refine the calibration parameters. Calibration equations were also developed for determining beryllium and fluorine at low concentrations in high-purity ARIES product oxides. The new fluorine calibration provides an order of magnitude greater sensitivity and results in an additional 1,408 containers in the original population identified as having fluorine as an impurity. Additionally, equations for calculating the lower limits of detection (LLDs) as a function of the actual counting time (live time) were obtained using WLS regression technique for samples in the calibration data set. This resulted in changes to the LLDs published previously.
