Ce3La9Si8(S8I)4 crystallizes in the triclinic P1 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are three inequivalent Ce3+ sites. In the first Ce3+ site, Ce3+ is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to eight S2- and one I1- atom. There are a spread of Ce–S bond distances ranging from 2.95–3.16 Å. The Ce–I bond length is 3.55 Å. In the second Ce3+ site, Ce3+ is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to eight S2- and one I1- atom. There are a spread of Ce–S bond distances ranging from 2.95–3.17 Å. The Ce–I bond length is 3.56 Å. In the third Ce3+ site, Ce3+ is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to eight S2- and one I1- atom. There are a spread of Ce–S bond distances ranging from 2.96–3.16 Å. The Ce–I bond length is 3.56 Å. There are nine inequivalent La3+ sites. In the first La3+ site, La3+ is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to eight S2- and one I1- atom. There are a spread of La–S bond distances ranging from 2.98–3.15 Å. The La–I bond length is 3.54 Å. In the second La3+ site, La3+ is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to eight S2- and one I1- atom. There are a spread of La–S bond distances ranging from 2.98–3.15 Å. The La–I bond length is 3.54 Å. In the third La3+ site, La3+ is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to eight S2- and one I1- atom.
