Recent Trends in Transport of Surface Carbonaceous Aerosols to the Upper-Troposphere-Lower-Stratosphere Linked to Expansion of the Asian Summer Monsoon Anticyclone

Using Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications Version-2 (MERRA-2) re-analyses, we have examined recent trends (2000–2019) in transport of surface carbonaceous aerosols (CAs), that is, organic carbon and black carbon, to the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) during the Asian summer monsoon (ASM). We find a significant increased concentration of UTLS CA, linked to a linear trend in an expansion of the Asian Summer Monsoon Anticyclone (ASMA). Over core monsoon latitudes (25°–35°N), the trends in UTLS CA are enabled by increased upward transport from surface sources via an intensified monsoon meridional circulation, with increased latent heating over the southern Tibetan Plateau and foothill regions, enhanced by feedback processes associated with radiative heating by UTLS CA. In the extra-tropics, increased UTLS CA stems primarily from an extended source of increased wildfire emissions over eastern Siberia and northern Asia, coincident with a large-scale anomalous anticyclone with enhanced surface warming and drying near (80°–120°E, 55°–70°N). Here, CAs are transported upward from the surface to the ULS, likely by increased pyro-convection associated with enhanced wildfires, and enter the tropical UTLS via increased equatorward transport on the eastern flanks of anomalous upper-level anticyclones, coupled to the expanded ASMA. Overall, the increasing UTLS CA trends associated with expansion of the ASMA are consistent with a hydrostatic expansion of a warming troposphere, reflected in a rise in the tropical tropopause and consequential dynamical adjustments of the ASM subtropical jetstream, modulating the climate of the greater ASM region.

Unravelling Magnetic Nanochain Formation in Dispersion for In Vivo Applications

Self-assembly of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) into 1D chains is appealing, because of their biocompatibility and higher mobility compared to 2D/3D assemblies while traversing the circulatory passages and blood vessels for in vivo biomedical applications. In this work, parameters such as size, concentration, composition, and magnetic field, responsible for chain formation of IONPs in a dispersion as opposed to spatially confining substrates, are examined. In particular, the monodisperse 27 nm IONPs synthesized by an extended LaMer mechanism are shown to form chains at 4 mT, which are lengthened with applied field reaching 270 nm at 2.2 T. The chain lengths are completely reversible in field. Using a combination of scattering methods and reverse Monte Carlo simulations the formation of chains is directly visualized. The visualization of real-space IONPs assemblies formed in dispersions presents a novel tool for biomedical researchers. This allows for rapid exploration of the behavior of IONPs in solution in a broad parameter space and unambiguous extraction of the parameters of the equilibrium structures. Additionally, it can be extended to study novel assemblies formed by more complex geometries of IONPs.

Open and Close-Packed, Shape-Engineered Polygonal Nanoparticle Metamolecules with Tailorable Fano Resonances

In this study, a top-down lithographic patterning and deposition process is reported for producing nanoparticles (NPs) with well-defined sizes, shapes, and compositions that are often not accessible by wet-chemical synthetic methods. These NPs are ligated and harvested from the substrate surface to prepare colloidal NP dispersions. Using a template-assisted assembly technique, fabricated NPs are driven by capillary forces to assemble into size- and shape-engineered templates and organize into open or close-packed multi-NP structures or NP metamolecules. The sizes and shapes of the NPs and of the templates control the NP number, coordination, interparticle gap size, disorder, and location of defects such as voids in the NP metamolecules. The plasmonic resonances of polygonal-shaped Au NPs are exploited to correlate the structure and optical properties of assembled NP metamolecules. Comparing open and close-packed architectures highlights that introduction of a center NP to form close-packed assemblies supports collective interactions, altering magnetic optical modes and multipolar interactions in Fano resonances. Decreasing the distance between NPs strengthens the plasmonic coupling, and the structural symmetries of the NP metamolecules determine the orientation-dependent scattering response.

Microstructure of Methylammonium Lead iodide Perovskite Thin Films: A Comprehensive Study of the Strain and Texture

Controlling the microstructure of hybrid halide perovskite thin films is essential for optimizing their performance in optoelectronic devices. It is well established that the strain state of the perovskite layer affects its stability. Likewise, the orientation of the perovskite lattice is a determining parameter as these materials have shown pronounced anisotropies in their physical and mechanical properties. In this work, the authors focus on the understanding of the mechanisms that govern the strain and texture observed in MAPbI 3 thin films deposited on various oxide substrates. A thorough study of the evolution of the strain of the perovskite layer upon cooling down to room temperature from the crystallization temperature (100 °C) shows an essentially relaxed behavior of the perovskite layers. This result contradicts the commonly accepted hypothesis according to which MAPbI 3 layers synthesized above ambient temperature are strained due to the large mismatch in the thermal expansion coefficients of the perovskite and its substrate. The texture in MAPbI 3 layers is investigated by means of synchrotron full-field diffraction X-ray microscopy. This technique allows the direct observation of the [hh0] and [00l]-oriented domains at the origin of the observed textures, demonstrating both their twin and ferroelastic nature. The stability of the different domain orientations is investigated by DFT calculations, illustrating the determining role of the chemical environment at the film-substrate interface. PbI 2- terminated surfaces are found to favor the [hh0] orientations while for MAI-terminated ones, both [hh0] and [00l] domains are equally stabilized. The different results constitute an important step of clarification and understanding from the perspective of controlling the microstructure of perovskite layers.

Bioinspired Activation of N 2 on Asymmetrical Coordinated Fe Grafted 1T MoS 2 at Room Temperature

Inspired by the nitrogen fixation process on MoFe nitrogenase, asymmetrical coordinated Fe grafted onto 1T MoS 2 were successfully synthesized. The unique electron -rich structure with asymmetrical coordination made the 1T Fe 0.1 Mo 0.9 S 2 layered material actively react with water and dinitrogen at room temperature and atmosphere pressure. Subsequently, ammonia can be produced with a yield of 800 pmol (NH 4 + ) g -1 (12.5% yield in mole). The activation, fixation and reduction of dinitrogen were confirmed by isotopically labeled experiments. The location and the specific coordination environment of grafted Fe in Fe-Mo-S were further determined by X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis. Our work demonstrates that the nitrogen fixation and reduction for ammonia at room temperature without any chemical and electrochemical assistance is distinctly different from traditional bionic -inspired nitrogen fixation process. The mechanism of the activation and reduction of N 2 was further investigated by density functional theory calculation and Raman spectra. Compared with 1T MoS 2 , the enriched electron nature and asymmetrical coordination of Fe in Fe-Mo-S materials play a critical role in the bioinspired activation of N 2 at ambient condition.

Phase diagrams and microstructures of aqueous short alkyl chain polyethylene glycol ether carboxylate and carboxylic acid triblock surfactant solutions

The surfactant C 8 Eo 8 CH 2 COOH (Akypo LF2) and its salts have a small hydrophobic and a significantly longer hydrophilic part. As a consequence, there must be a significant steric constraint, once these surfactant molecules form micelles. In addition, the partially charged headgroups should bring some additional fine-tuning via electrostatic interactions to this "essentially non-ionic" surfactant. Experiments: Phase diagrams of binary mixtures of water and C 8 Eo 8 CH 2 COOH are established over large concentration and temperature ranges, also at different pHs and in the presence of sodium and calcium ions. Surface tensions and osmotic pressures are measured to understand the systems. To evaluate the microstructures, also Dynamic Light Scattering and Small-Angle X-ray Scattering are performed.

The concentration of BTEX in selected urban areas of Malaysia during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) are air pollutants that harm human health. This study aims to identify BTEX concentrations before the lockdown known as the Movement Control Order was imposed (BMCO), during the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO), and then during the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO). These orders were introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia. The study utilised data measured by the continuous monitoring of BTEX using online gas chromatography instruments located at three urban area stations. Here, the results showed that the BTEX concentrations reduced by between –38% and –46% during the MCO compared to the BMCO period. The reduction of human mobility during the MCO and CMCO influenced the lower BTEX concentrations recorded at a station within the Kuala Lumpur area. The results of the BTEX diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis showed that the major source of BTEX, especially during the BMCO and CMCO periods, was motor vehicle emissions. Further investigation, using correlation analysis and polar plots, showed that the BTEX concentrations were also influenced by meteorological variables such as wind speed, air temperature and relative humidity.

Probing spin waves in Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles for magnonics applications

The magnetic properties of spinel nanoparticles can be controlled by synthesizing particles of a specific shape and size. The synthesized nanorods, nanodots and cubic nanoparticles have different crystal planes selectively exposed on the surface. The surface effects on the static magnetic properties are well documented, while their influence on spin waves dispersion is still being debated. Our ability to manipulate spin waves using surface and defect engineering in magnetic nanoparticles is the key to designing magnonic devices. We synthesized cubic and spherical nanoparticles of a classical antiferromagnetic material Co 3 O 4 to study the shape and size effects on their static and dynamic magnetic proprieties. Using a combination of experimental methods, we probed the magnetic and crystal structures of our samples and directly measured spin wave dispersions using inelastic neutron scattering. We found a weak, but unquestionable, increase in exchange interactions for the cubic nanoparticles as compared to spherical nanoparticle and bulk powder reference samples. Interestingly, the exchange interactions in spherical nanoparticles have bulk-like properties, despite a ferromagnetic contribution from canted surface spins.

A noncoding single-nucleotide polymorphism at 8q24 drives IDH1 -mutant glioma formation

Establishing causal links between inherited polymorphisms and cancer risk is challenging. Here, we focus on the single-nucleotide polymorphism rs55705857, which confers a sixfold greater risk of isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH)–mutant low-grade glioma (LGG). Here, we reveal that rs55705857 itself is the causal variant and is associated with molecular pathways that drive LGG. Mechanistically, we show that rs55705857 resides within a brain-specific enhancer, where the risk allele disrupts OCT2/4 binding, allowing increased interaction with the Myc promoter and increased Myc expression. Mutating the orthologous mouse rs55705857 locus accelerated tumor development in an Idh1 R132H -driven LGG mouse model from 472 to 172 days and increased penetrance from 30% to 75%. Our work reveals mechanisms of the heritable predisposition to lethal glioma in ~40% of LGG patients.

Broadly neutralizing humanized SARS-CoV-2 antibody binds to a conserved epitope on Spike and provides antiviral protection through inhalation-based delivery in non-human primates

The COVID-19 pandemic represents a global challenge that has impacted and is expected to continue to impact the lives and health of people across the world for the foreseeable future. The rollout of vaccines has provided highly anticipated relief, but effective therapeutics are required to further reduce the risk and severity of infections. Monoclonal antibodies have been shown to be effective as therapeutics for SARS-CoV-2, but as new variants of concern (VoC) continue to emerge, their utility and use have waned due to limited or no efficacy against these variants. Furthermore, cumbersome systemic administration limits easy and broad access to such drugs. As well, concentrations of systemically administered antibodies in the mucosal epithelium, a primary site of initial infection, are dependent on neonatal Fc receptor mediated transport and require high drug concentrations. To reduce the viral load more effectively in the lung, we developed an inhalable formulation of a SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibody binding to a conserved epitope on the Spike protein, ensuring pan-neutralizing properties. Administration of this antibody via a vibrating mesh nebulization device retained antibody integrity and resulted in effective distribution of the antibody in the upper and lower respiratory tract of non-human primates (NHP). In comparison with intravenous administration, significantly higher antibody concentrations can be obtained in the lung, resulting in highly effective reduction in viral load post SARS-CoV-2 challenge. This approach may reduce the barriers of access and uptake of antibody therapeutics in real-world clinical settings and provide a more effective blueprint for targeting existing and potentially emerging respiratory tract viruses.

Role of different organic and inorganic amendments in the biofortification of iodine in Coriandrum sativum crop

Iodine deficiency disorder (IDDs) is one of the most prevailing and common health issues in mountainous communities. An effective way to control the prevalence and emergence of IDDs in remote areas is to use iodized salt. However, recent studies indicated that iodized salt is mostly lost during the cooking process. The current study of iodine biofortification differed from the previous studies in two main aspects: it involved exogenous organic iodine (OI), and inorganic iodine such as potassium iodide (KI), added in the amended soils, which previous studies did not consider. Moreover, the translocation, transformation, and distribution of iodine from soil to plants are poorly understood in amended soil. Thus, identifying an effective management option to enhance iodine (I) bioavailability in nutrient-deficient soils is currently a significant challenge. Therefore, a greenhouse study was conducted to investigate the effects of organic and inorganic soil amendments on the uptake of different iodine sources in coriander crops. Results showed that applying an inorganic iodine source significantly enhanced the iodine edible part of the crop compared to the control ( p < 0.05). The application of soil amendments relatively improved iodine uptake by the coriander crop compared to the control. The highest iodine was found in crop tissues grown in wood ash-amended soil supplemented with KI (291.97 μg kg −1 ). The KI uptake was significantly higher than the OI ( p < 0.05). Compared to OI, a higher translocation factor (0.96) and distribution coefficient (3.51) were found for plants treated with KI. Thus, this study indicates that a suitable soil amendment can be a better option for iodine biofortification and that it can serve as an alternative to iodized salt in preventing IDDs.

An Overview of Biofilm Formation–Combating Strategies and Mechanisms of Action of Antibiofilm Agents

Biofilm formation on surfaces via microbial colonization causes infections and has become a major health issue globally. The biofilm lifestyle provides resistance to environmental stresses and antimicrobial therapies. Biofilms can cause several chronic conditions, and effective treatment has become a challenge due to increased antimicrobial resistance. Antibiotics available for treating biofilm-associated infections are generally not very effective and require high doses that may cause toxicity in the host. Therefore, it is essential to study and develop efficient anti-biofilm strategies that can significantly reduce the rate of biofilm-associated healthcare problems. In this context, some effective combating strategies with potential anti-biofilm agents, including plant extracts, peptides, enzymes, lantibiotics, chelating agents, biosurfactants, polysaccharides, organic, inorganic, and metal nanoparticles, etc., have been reviewed to overcome biofilm-associated healthcare problems. From their extensive literature survey, it can be concluded that these molecules with considerable structural alterations might be applied to the treatment of biofilm-associated infections, by evaluating their significant delivery to the target site of the host. To design effective anti-biofilm molecules, it must be assured that the minimum inhibitory concentrations of these anti-biofilm compounds can eradicate biofilm-associated infections without causing toxic effects at a significant rate.

Hybrid prioritized resource allocation in thermally-or power-constrained computing devices

Various embodiments comprise prioritizing frequency allocations in thermally- or power-constrained computing devices. Computer elements may be assigned ‘weights’ based on their priorities. The computer elements with higher weights may receive higher frequency allocations to assure they receive priority in processing more quickly. The computer elements with lower weights may receive lower frequency allocations and suffer a slowdown in their processing. Elements with the same weight may be grouped together for the purpose of frequency allocation.
