Two-loop radiative jet function for exclusive B-meson and Higgs decays

The rare radiative B -meson decay \( {B}^{-}\to \gamma {\mathrm{\ell}}^{-}\overline{v} \) and the radiative Higgs-boson decay h → γγ mediated by light-quark loops both receive large logarithmic corrections in QCD, which can be resummed using factorization theorems derived in soft-collinear effective theory. In these factorization theorems the same radiative jet function appears, which is a central object in the study of factorization beyond the leading order in scale ratios. We calculate this function at two-loop order both in momentum space and in a dual space, where its renormalization-group evolution takes on a simpler form. We also derive the two-loop anomalous dimension of the jet function and present the exact solution to its evolution equation at two-loop order. Another important outcome of our analysis is the explicit form of the two-loop anomalous dimension of the B -meson light-cone distribution amplitude in momentum space.

A supersymmetric theory of baryogenesis and sterile sneutrino dark matter from B mesons

Low-scale baryogenesis and dark matter generation can occur via the production of neutral B mesons at MeV temperatures in the early Universe, which undergo CP-violating oscillations and subsequently decay into a dark sector. In this work, we discuss the consequences of realizing this mechanism in a supersymmetric model with an unbroken U(1) R symmetry which is identified with baryon number. B mesons decay into a dark sector through a baryon number conserving operator mediated by TeV scale squarks and a GeV scale Dirac bino. The dark sector particles can be identified with sterile neutrinos and their superpartners in a type-I seesaw framework for neutrino masses. The sterile sneutrinos are sufficiently long lived and constitute the dark matter. The produced matter-antimatter asymmetry is directly related to observables measurable at B factories and hadron colliders, the most relevant of which are the semileptonic-leptonic asymmetries in neutral B meson systems and the inclusive branching fraction of B mesons into hadrons and missing energy. We discuss model independent constraints on these experimental observables before quoting predictions made in the supersymmetric context. Constraints from astrophysics, neutrino physics and flavor observables are studied, as are potential LHC signals with a focus on novel long lived particle searches which are directly linked to properties of the dark sector.

Test of Light-Lepton Universality in the Rates of Inclusive Semileptonic B-Meson Decays at Belle II

We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic B -meson decays, R ( X e / μ ) = B ( B → X e ν ) / B ( B → X μ ν ) , a precision test of electron-muon universality, using data corresponding to 189 fb - 1 from electron-positron collisions collected with the Belle II detector. In events where the partner B meson is fully reconstructed, we use fits to the lepton momentum spectra above 1.3 GeV / c to obtain R ( X e / μ ) = 1.007 ± 0.009 ( stat ) ± 0.019 ( syst ) , which is the most precise lepton-universality test of its kind and agrees with the standard-model expectation.

Sensitivity study with a $\textit{D}$ and $\textit{B}$ mesons modular simulation code of heavy flavor $R_{AA}$ and azimuthal anisotropies based on beam energy, initial conditions, hadronization, and suppression mechanisms

Heavy flavor probes provide important information about the in-medium properties of the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions. In this work, we investigate the effects of 2D + 1 event-by-event fluctuating hydrodynamic backgrounds on the nuclear suppression factor and momentum anisotropies of heavy flavor mesons and nonphotonic electrons. Using the state-of-the-art $\textit{D}$ and $\textit{B}$ mesons modular simulation code (called “DAB-MOD”), we perform a systematic comparison of different transport equations in the same background, including a few energy-loss models—with and without energy-loss fluctuations—and a relativistic Langevin model with different drag parametrizations. We present the resulting $\textit{D}$ and $\textit{B}$ mesons $R_{A A}, v_2, v_3,$ and $v_4$ as well as multiparticle cumulants, in AuAu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV and $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV , and compare them to the available experimental data. The $v_2${4}/$v_2${2} ratio, which is known to be a powerful probe of the initial conditions and flow fluctuations in the soft sector, is also studied in the context of heavy flavor. We also investigate the correlations between the transverse anisotropies of heavy mesons and all charged particles to better understand how heavy quarks couple to the hydrodynamically expanding quark-gluon plasma. Finally, we study the influence that different initial conditions and the implementation of heavy-light quark coalescence has on our results.

Search for long-lived heavy neutrinos in the decays of B mesons produced in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for long-lived heavy neutrinos (N) in the decays of B mesons produced in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 41.6 fb$^{−1}$ collected in 2018 by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, using a dedicated data stream that enhances the number of recorded events containing B mesons. The search probes heavy neutrinos with masses in the range 1 < m$_{N}$ < 3 GeV and decay lengths in the range 10$^{−2}$ < cτ$_{N}$ < 10$^{4}$ mm, where τ$_{N}$ is the N proper mean lifetime. Signal events are defined by the signature B → ℓ$_{B}$NX; N → ℓ$^{±}$π$^{∓}$, where the leptons ℓ$_{B}$ and ℓ can be either a muon or an electron, provided that at least one of them is a muon. The hadronic recoil system, X, is treated inclusively and is not reconstructed. No significant excess of events over the standard model background is observed in any of the ℓ$^{±}$π$^{∓}$ invariant mass distributions. Limits at 95% confidence level on the sum of the squares of the mixing amplitudes between heavy and light neutrinos, |V$_{N}$|$^{2}$, and on cτ$_{N}$ are obtained in different mixing scenarios for both Majorana and Dirac-like N particles. The most stringent upper limit |V$_{N}$|$^{2}$ < 2.0 × 10$^{−5}$ is obtained at m$_{N}$ = 1.95 GeV for the Majorana case where N mixes exclusively with muon neutrinos. The limits on |V$_{N}$|$^{2}$ for masses 1 < m$_{N}$ < 1.7 GeV are the most stringent from a collider experiment to date.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Direct C P violation in charmless three-body decays of B ± mesons

Measurements of CP asymmetries in charmless three-body decays of B ± mesons are reported using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.9 fb –1 . The previously observed CP asymmetry in B ± →π ± ⁢K + K – decays is confirmed, and CP asymmetries are observed with a significance of more than five standard deviations in the B ± →π ± π + ⁢π – and B ± →K ± ⁢K + ⁢K – decays, while the CP asymmetry of B ± →K ± ⁢π + ⁢π – decays is confirmed to be compatible with zero. The distributions of these asymmetries are also studied as a function of the three-body phase space and suggest contributions from rescattering and resonance interference processes. An indication of the presence of the decays B ± →π ± ⁢χ c⁢0 ⁡(1⁢P) in both B ± →π ± π + ⁢π – and B ± →π ± ⁢K + ⁢K – decays is observed, as is CP violation involving these amplitudes.

Measurement of the dependence of the hadron production fraction ratio $f_\mathrm{s} / f_\mathrm{u}$ and $f_\mathrm{d} / f_ \mathrm{u}$ on B meson kinematic variables in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The dependence of the ratio between the B$_\mathrm{s}^0$ and B$^+$ hadron production fractions, $f_\mathrm{s} / f_\mathrm{u}$, on the transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) and rapidity of the B mesons is studied using the decay channels B$_\mathrm{s}^0$$\to$ J$/\psi\,\phi$ and B$^+$$\to$ J$/\psi$ K$^+$. The analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 61.6 fb$^{-1}$. The $f_\mathrm{s} / f_\mathrm{u}$ ratio is observed to depend on the B $p_\mathrm{T}$ and to be consistent with becoming asymptotically constant at large $p_\mathrm{T}$. No rapidity dependence is observed. The ratio of the B$^0$ to B$^+$ hadron production fractions, $f_\mathrm{d} / f_\mathrm{u}$, measured using the B$^0$$\to$ J$/\psi$ K$^{*0}$ decay channel, is found to be consistent with unity and independent of $p_\mathrm{T}$ and rapidity, as expected from isospin invariance.

B-meson semileptonic decays from highly improved staggered quarks

We present an update for results on B-meson semileptonic decays using the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action for both valence and 2+1+1 sea quarks. The use of the highly improvedaction, combined with the MILC collaboration’s gauge ensembles with lattice spacings down to $\sim$0.03fm, allows the $b$ quark to be treated with the same discretization as the lighter quarks. The talk willfocus on updated results for $B_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}$, $B_{(s)} \to K$ scalar and vector form factors.

Self-consistent optimization of the z expansion for B -meson decays

We discuss the self-consistency imposed by the analyticity of regular parts of form factors, appearing in the z expansion for semileptonic B -meson decays, when fitted in different kinematic regions. Relying on the uniqueness of functions defined by analytic continuation, we propose four metrics which measure the departure from the ideal analytic self-consistency. We illustrate the process using Belle data for B → D ℓ ν ℓ with the two kinematic regions chosen as the five low- z and the five high- z bins. For this specific example, the metrics provide consistent indications that some choices (order of truncation, Boyd-Grinstein-Lebed or Bourrely-Caprini-Lellouch) made in the form of the z expansion can be optimized. However, other choices ( z origin, location of isolated poles and threshold constraints) appear to have very little effect on these metrics. On the other hand, changing the kinetic regions affects the results and should also be considered in the optimization process. We briefly discuss the implication for optimization of the z expansion for nucleon form factors relevant for neutrino oscillation experiments. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for two-body B meson decays to Λ 0 and Ω c ( * ) 0

We report the results of the first search for Standard Model and baryon-number-violating two-body decays of the neutral B mesons to Λ 0 and Ω c ( * ) 0 using 711 fb − 1 of data collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. We observe no evidence of signal from any such decays and set 95% confidence-level upper limits on the products of B 0 and B ¯ 0 branching fractions for these two-body decays with B ( Ω c 0 → π + Ω − ) in the range between 9.5 × 10 − 8 and 31.2 × 10 − 8 . $B$-meson semileptonic decays with highly improved staggered quarks

We present an update of the Fermilab Lattice and MILC Collaborations project to compute the form factors for semileptonic $B_{(s)}$-meson decays. Our calculation uses the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action for sea and valence quarks, and ensembles with up, down, strange, and charm quarks in the sea. Using a highly improved action with the MILC Collaboration's gauge ensembles with lattice spacings down to $a\approx0.03$ fm, allows the heavy valence quarks to be treated with the same discretization as the light and strange quarks. This unified treatment of the valence quarks allows for absolutely normalized vector currents, bypassing the need for perturbative matching, which has been a source of uncertainty in previous calculations of $B$-meson decay form factors by our collaboration. All preliminary form-factor results are blinded.

Dark photon and dark Z mediated B meson decays

We study flavor changing neutral current decays of B and K mesons in the dark U(1) D model, with the dark photon/dark Z mass between 10 MeV and 2 GeV. Although the model provides an improved fit (compared to the standard model) to the differential decay distributions of B → K ($\ast$) ℓ + ℓ – , with ℓ = μ, e, and B s → $\phi$μ + μ – , the allowed parameter space is ruled out by measurements of atomic parity violation, K + → μ + + invisible decay, and ${B}_s-{\overline{B}}_s$ mixing, among others. To evade constraints from low energy data, we extend the model to allow for (1) additional invisible Z D decay, (2) a direct vector coupling of Z D to muons, and (3) a direct coupling of Z D to both muons and electrons, with the electron coupling fine-tuned to cancel the Z D coupling to electrons via mixing. We find that only the latter case survives all constraints.

Variations to the z-Expansion of the Form Factor Describing the Decay of B Mesons

We examine the decay rate of the particle decay B 0 → D -ℓ +νℓ using data collected from the Belle Collaboration. We studied three parameterizations of the form factor which describe the differential decay rate, the Caprini, Lellouch, and Neubert (CLN) parametrization, the Boyd, Grinstein, and Lebed (BGL) parametrization, and the Bourrely, Caprini, and Lellouch (BCL) parameterization. The form factor is a function of the hadronic recoil variable w, and each parameterization contains unique free parameters which are the focus of this work. We test the extrapolations of the form factor by fitting many different subsets of the low w data and then compare the prediction of the fit to the high w data using a χ 2 -metric. By only fitting the low w data we are able to examine the stability of extrapolations which will be informative for lattice simulations.

Analysis of Neutral B -Meson Decays into Two Muons

Branching fraction and effective lifetime measurements of the rare decay B s 0 → μ + μ - and searches for the decays B 0 → μ + μ - and B s 0 → μ + μ - γ are reported using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to a luminosity of 9 fb - 1 . The branching fraction B ( B s 0 → μ + μ - ) = ( 3.0 9 - 0.43 - 0.11 + 0.46 + 0.15 ) × 10 - 9 and the effective lifetime τ ( B s 0 → μ + μ - ) = 2.07 ± 0.29 ± 0.03 ps are measured, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No significant signal for B 0 → μ + μ - and B s 0 → μ + μ - γ decays is found and upper limits B ( B 0 → μ + μ - ) < 2.6 × 10 - 10 and B ( B s 0 → μ + μ - γ ) < 2.0 × 10 - 9 at the 95% C.L. are determined, where the latter is limited to the range m μ μ > 4.9 GeV / c 2 . The results are in agreement with the standard model expectations.
