Beam current effect as a potential challenge in SEM-EBSD in situ tensile testing

Highlights: • In situ SEM-EBSD tensile tests were conducted using 304L steels with 8 and 10.4% Ni. • KAM and GROD evolution, twinning, and phase instability were investigated. • Phase transformation in 8% Ni-steel was sensitive to the electron beam current. In situ mechanical tensile tests coupled with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis were conducted using specimens of two 304L steels with ~8 and 10.4% Ni content, respectively. Twinning was observed in steel with 10.4% Ni content, whereas steel with 8% Ni content demonstrated martensitic transformation. Testing showed that the kinetics of martensitic transformation in steel with 8% Ni content was influenced by the electron beam current used during EBSD scans. Continuous scanning using 32 nA nominal beam current led to suppression of the phase instability in the near-surface layer, but acceptable comparable-to-the-bulk results were obtained using 8 nA beam current. The exact mechanism of the beam current role is unclear, but it appears to be neutral regarding Kernel Average Misorientation behavior and deformation-induced twinning.

PIP-II Beam Current Monitor Fault Case & Beam Position Monitor Linearity Studies in CST Studio

The use of non-invasive sensors & systems to measure particle beam characteristics is a crucial part of modern accelerator control systems. As such, simulations predicting the behavior of these sensors are essential for guiding beamline control system design. This poster details the results returned by two beam sensor models created using CST Studio software: the signal linearity of an elliptical beam position monitor (BPM), and the fault cases of an AC current transformer (ACCT) beam current monitor (BCM).

Beam Current Effect on Microstructure and Properties of Electron-Beam-Melted Ti-6Al-4V Alloy

In this study, a noncommercial 3D printing machine was used to fabricate Ti-6Al-4V alloy by electron-beam melting (EBM). The influence of beam current on the microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties of electron-beam-melted Ti-6Al-4V alloy was investigated. Numerical simulation is implemented to evaluate thermal fields during electron-beam melting of Ti-6Al-4V powder. The decrease in beam current from 3.5 to 2.5 mA leads to refinement of microstructure: The average width of α plates decreases from 10 down to 6 μm. The formation of finer microstructure is attributed to higher cooling rate at lower beam current confirmed by simulation. The phase composition of EBM Ti-6Al-4V indirectly depends on the beam current. High content of β phase (7%) was achieved at the beam current of 3 mA. The produced Ti-6Al-4V samples are characterized by high microhardness (470-520 HV).

Automated Calibration System for Beam Current Monitor

The Beam Current Monitor (BCM) measures the instantaneous current in a beam. This work aims to develop an automated calibration system for the BCM to address the need for calibration without interrupting beam operation. We strive to create a synchronous calibration method integrated into the master timeline by utilizing the pulsed nature of synchrotrons to run calibration pulses during inter-pulse gaps. This improvement should enhance operational efficiency, ensure safe operation, and help mitigate beam loss, all by enabling intermittent calibration during the operation of the accelerator. This is accomplished by developing a Python program that interfaces with a Keithley 6221 DC and AC source and a Keithley 2182A Nanovoltmeter. The program configures both of these devices to perform a selected mode of the current sweep, allows for the initiation of the current sweep, collects the measured voltage data from the 2182A, stores the collected data to the computer in a CSV file, and graphs the collected data.

Initial PIP-II Beam Current Monitor Fault Case Analyses & Beam Position Monitor Linearity Studies in CST Studio Suite

The use of non-invasive sensors & systems to measure particle beam characteristics is a crucial part of modern accelerator control systems due to their ability to return real time beam data while minimizing negative effects on beam quality. To ensure that one can be reasonably confident these sensors will behave as desired upon be-ing implemented within the beamline, simulations pre-dicting the performance of these sensors under beamline conditions can be used as a valuable tool for checking sensor functionality without a physical test bench. This paper details the design, testing, and results of two sensor models developed using CST Studio Suite soft-ware designed to mimic two sensors to be implemented within the PIP-III beamline: an elliptical, large-aperture beam position monitor (BPM) for which vertical & hori-zontal position signal linearity was analyzed, and an AC current transformer (ACCT) beam current monitor (BCM) used to search for potential fault cases within the BCM and beam pipe flange gaps. Special focus is given to the discovery of linearity variations within the BPM and the use of frequency domain techniques in the BCM fault case analyses.

Measurements at peak operational beam current in the SNS beam test facility

Work at the SNS beam test facility has focused on high dimensional and high dynamic range measurements of the medium energy (2.5 Mev) beam distribution. This is motivated by the need to understand and predict beam losses down to one-part-per-million. The initial demonstration of full-and-direct 6D phase space measurement was done at a current of 40 mA transported through the RFQ. Since that demonstration, more detailed studies have been performed at lower transported currents (in the range 30 mA and below). This is due to a hardware change - recent runs utilize the original SNS RFQ, which after a decade of service in the SNS achieves transmission significantly below design (50-60%, vs >80%). A short run in 2023 with a newly-commissioned RFQ enables maximum transmission. Preliminary results from beam distribution measurements during this run are discussed.

Effect of Air Pressure on Parameters of Beam Current and X-Ray Radiation Generated in a Gas Diode

Parameters of a beam of runaway electrons and X-ray radiation generated in a gas diode at different atmospheric pressures are studied. It is shown that the maximum beam currents and intensities of X-ray radiation are generated at an air pressure of about 10{sup 2} Pa. Distribution of beam electrons with respect to energy is determined by the method of attenuation of beam current using aluminum filters with different thicknesses. The maximum of such a distribution corresponds to an electron energy of about 100 keV. The maximum exposure dose of X-ray radiation behind a copper-foil anode with a thickness of 30 μm is about 107 mR. It is shown that the beam electrons absorbed by elements of an X-ray detector affect the shape and amplitude of the desired signal at beam currents of greater than 35 A/cm{sup 2}.

MHD stability trends and improved performance of LHD inward-shifted configurations: The role of the neutral beam current drive and thermal plasma density

The aim of the present study is to analyze the effect of the neutral beam current drive (NBCD), thermal plasma density, and NBI operational regime on the stability of pressure gradient-driven modes (PGDM) and Alfvén eigenmodes (AE) in LHD inward-shifted configurations. The stabilization of n/m = 1/2 PGDM (n toroidal mode and m poloidal mode) is observed in the discharge 167 800 during the co-NBCD phase. The iota profile evolution measured by motional stark effect diagnostic may indicate the iota profile up-shift caused by the co-NBCD can induce a non-resonant transition of the rational surface 1/2 before the mode stabilization. The evolution of the iota profile and continuum gaps in the discharge 167 805 during the ctr-NBCD phase leads to the stabilization of the AE, caused by the narrowing of the continuum gap as the iota profile down-shift. Opposite stability trends are identified for PGDM and AE stability with respect to the thermal plasma density. A larger thermal plasma density (larger thermal β) further enhances PGDM although the continuum gaps are narrower leading to configurations with stable AEs. The linear stability of AEs is analyzed using the gyro-fluid FAR3d code to reproduce the AE stability trends observed in the experiments with respect to the NBCD and thermal plasma density. The analysis of hypothetical scenarios dedicated to study different NBI operational regimes with respect to EP energy, and β and radial density profiles indicate off-axis NBI operation shows a higher EP β threshold to destabilize AEs compared to on-axis configuration. This is explained by the presence of a TAE gap in the inner plasma region, easily destabilized by an on-axis NBI injection. The control of the NBCD and thermal plasma in the discharge 167 800 shows a transitory stabilization of PGDM and AEs, as well as an improved discharge performance identified by an increment of the neutron fluxes.

Integration Development and Testing of Rear Transition Monitor for Beam Current Monitoring System

Addressing baseline effects in accelerator environments is crucial for accurate data acquisition and analysis, since baseline effects can obscure signal clarity and impact the reliability of beam current monitoring systems. There are many potential contributors to baseline noise, such as variations in beam dynamics, electromagnetic interference from nearby equipment, or RF interference. Previous applications of noise reduction systems don t sufficiently filter sources of asynchronous noise, so a new algorithm was implemented. A simulation dataset was created to replicate beam conditions and a Red Pitaya FPGA was used to collect data through the streaming application. A Python script was developed to implement noise reduction algorithms and efforts were made to integrate real-time data streaming with the Redis platform and Acnet Front End infrastructure.

High temperature and high beam current compatible targets and methods thereof for generating noble gas/radiohalogen generators for medical isotopes

A method of providing alpha particle emitters and materials suitable for use in generating the alpha particles for medical treatment is disclosed. Metal oxide targets, preferentially Bi 2 O 3 pellets and Bi 2 O 3 coatings on metallic or metal oxide substrates are formed. The targets placed in a heated vacuum chamber subjecting to irradiation using a 6 Li beam at an elevated temperature below the melting point of the target generate a radioactive gas, such as 211 Rn, the radioactive gas is carried by an inert gas which is delivered a carrier for, such as a carbon column or oil for delivery to a treatment facility. The radioactive gas such as 211 Rn generates 211 At, which has a useable half-life of at least about 14 hours, in turn releases alpha particles which are effective for use in medical procedures.

Design of digital acquisition for beam current monitor

As a part of the Proton Improvement Plan – II (PIP-II) at Fermilab, instrumentation systems are being modernized to take advantage of the higher speeds and ease of use offered by standardized embedded systems like MicroTCA. A rear-transition module (RTM) is being designed to interface with said embedded systems. In each of the four identical channels on the RTM, the differential signal from an alternating-current current transformer (ACCT) transimpedance amplifier will again be amplified by a differential operation-amplifier, then filtered by a low-pass topology. The conditioned signal is then digitized at a maximum of 10MS/s by an analog to digital converter (ADC) integrated circuit. After digitization, the ADC passes the data to an off the shelf AdvancedMC (AMC) Xilinx FPGA module using low voltage differential signals. This paper will describe the simulation of analog circuitry for signal conditioning, simulation of digital signal integrity based on physical design as well as verification of design characteristics critical to signal integrity. This work aims to create a methodology that can be applied to future RTMs requiring application of high-speed digital design principles.

Design Status Update of the Electron-Ion Collider

The design of the electron-ion collider EIC to be constructed at Brookhaven National Laboratory has been continuously evolving towards a realistic and robust design that meets all the requirements set forth by the nuclear physics community in the White Paper. Over the past year activities have been focused on maturing the design, and on developing alternatives to mitigate risk. These include improvements of the interaction region design as well as modifications of the hadron ring vacuum system to accommodate the high average and peak beam currents. Beam dynamics studies have been performed to determine and optimize the dynamic aperture in the two collider rings and the beam-beam performance. We will present the EIC design with a focus on recent developments.
