Size Dependence of the Tetragonal to Orthorhombic Phase Transition of Ammonia Borane in Nanoconfinement

We have investigated the thermodynamic property modification of ammonia borane via nanoconfinement. Two different mesoporous silica scaffolds, SBA-15 and MCM-41, were used to confine ammonia borane. Using in situ Raman spectroscopy, we examined how pore size influences the phase transition temperature from tetragonal (I4mm) to orthorhombic (Pmn21) for ammonia borane. In bulk ammonia borane, the phase transition occurs at around 217 K; however, confinement in SBA-15 (with ~8 nm pore sizes) reduces this temperature to approximately 195 K, while confinement in MCM-41 (with pore sizes of 2.1–2.7 nm) further lowers it to below 90 K. This suppression of the phase transition as a function of pore size has not been previously studied using Raman spectroscopy. The stability of the I4mm phase at a much lower temperature can be interpreted by incorporating the surface energy terms to the overall free energy of the system in a simple thermodynamic model, which leads to a significant increase in the surface energy when transitioning from the tetragonal phase to the orthorhombic phase.

Surface-Controlled Conversion of Ammonia Borane from Boron Nitride

“One-pot regeneration”, which is simple regneneration method of ammonia borane (AB) using hydrazine and liquid ammonia, enables conversion of AB from hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) after milling hydrogenation. Solution 11 B-NMR revealed the presence of AB after NH 3 /N 2 H 4 treatment of milled h-BN (BNH x ) although the yield of AB was less than 5%. The conversion mechanism was clarified as B-H bonds on the h-BN surface created by ball-milling under hydrogen pressure have an ability to form AB, which was confirmed by Thermogravimetry-Residual Gas Analysis (TG-RGA) and Infrared (IR) analysis. The reaction routes are also the same as regeneration route of polyborazylene because intermediates of AB such as (B(NH 2 ) 3 and hydrazine borane were found by solution 11 B-NMR after soaking BNH x in liquid NH 3 and hydrazine, respectively. Because of the fact that all reactions proceed on the h-BN surface and no reaction proceeds when neat h-BN is treated, breaking of B 3 N 3 ring structure and then creation of B-H bond is the key issue to increase conversion yield of AB.

Understanding the p-doping of spiroOMeTAD by tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane

The solid-state organization of photoabsorber, hole and electron transporting layers, and interfaces between them plays an important role in governing the performance and stability of emerging optoelectronic devices such as perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The molecular organic semiconductor (OSC) 2,2' ,7,7' -tetrakis [N,N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiroOMeTAD) is a promising hole-transporting material (HTM) for PSCs, which is p-doped by molecular dopants to augment the charge carrier mobility. Here, the p-type doping of spiroOMeTAD by tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (BCF) is investigated by a combination of techniques including optical spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), solid-state (ss)NMR, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. BCF molecules interact with traces of water molecules to form BCF-water complexes. Optical spectroscopy analysis suggests that the BCF/BCF-water complexes oxidize spiroOMeTAD molecules and facilitate p-type doping of spiroOMeTAD molecules. The different distributions of BCF and BCF-water molecules in doped spiroOMeTAD are characterized by FTIR and 11B NMR spectroscopy. An NMR crystallography approach which combines two-dimensional (2D) ssNMR and crystallography modeling is employed to unravel the packing interactions in spiroOMeTAD, and this analysis is extended to probe the morphological and structural changes in spiroOMeTAD:BCF blends. The hyperfine interactions are characterized by 2D hyperfine sub-level correlation (HYSCORE) spectroscopy. In this way, insight into the complex spiroOMeTAD:BCF blend morphology is obtained and compared for different dopant concentrations. Further, molecular-level analysis of doped HTMs enabled by this study has much wider relevance for further investigation, for example, chemical design and interfacial engineering of p-type doped HTMs for stable and efficient hybrid perovskite photovoltaics.

Chemoselective and Site-Selective Reductions Catalyzed by a Supramolecular Host and a Pyridine–Borane Cofactor

Supramolecular catalysts emulate the mechanism of enzymes to achieve large rate accelerations and precise selectivity under mild and aqueous conditions. While significant strides have been made in the supramolecular host-promoted synthesis of small molecules, applications of this reactivity to chemoselective and site-selective modification of complex biomolecules remain virtually unexplored. We report here a supramolecular system where coencapsulation of pyridine-borane with a variety of molecules including enones, ketones, aldehydes, oximes, hydrazones, and imines effects efficient reductions under basic aqueous conditions. Furthermore, upon subjecting unprotected lysine to the host-mediated reductive amination conditions, we observed excellent ε-selectivity, indicating that differential guest binding within the same molecule is possible without sacrificing reactivity. Inspired by the post-translational modification of complex biomolecules by enzymatic systems, we then applied this supramolecular reaction to the site-selective labeling of a single lysine residue in an 11-amino acid peptide chain and human insulin.

Structural stability, dihydrogen bonding, and pressure-induced polymorphic transformations in hydrazine borane

Hydrazine borane (N 2 H 4 BH 3 ) has attracted considerable interest as a promising solid-state hydrogen storage material owing to its high hydrogen content and easy preparation. In this work, pressure-induced phase transitions of N 2 H 4 BH 3 were investigated using a combination of vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and density functional theory (DFT) up to 30 GPa. Our results showed that N 2 H 4 BH 3 exhibits remarkable structural stability in a very broad pressure region up to 15 GPa, and then two phase transitions were identified: the first one is from the ambient-pressure Pbcn phase to a Pbca phase near 15 GPa; the second is from the Pbca phase to a Pccn phase near 25 GPa. As revealed by DFT calculations, the unusual stability of N 2 H 4 BH 3 and the late phase transformations were attributed to the pressure-mediated evolutions of dihydrogen bonding frameworks, the compressibility and the enthalpies of the high-pressure polymorphs. In conclusion, our findings provide new insight into the structures and bonding properties of N 2 H 4 BH 3 that are important for hydrogen storage applications.

Stable High‐Conductivity Ethylenedioxythiophene Polymers via Borane‐Adduct Doping

Efficient doping of polymer semiconductors is required for high conductivity and efficient thermoelectric performance. Lewis acids, e.g., B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 , have been widely employed as dopants, but the mechanism is not fully understood. 1:1 “Wheland type” or zwitterionic complexes of B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 are created with small conjugated molecules 3,6-bis(5-(7-(5-methylthiophen-2-yl)-2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-dioctyl-2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione [oligo_DPP(EDOT) 2 ] and 3,6-bis(5''-methyl-[2,2':5',2''-terthiophen]-5-yl)-2,5-dioctyl-2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione [oligo_DPP(Th) 2 ]. Using a wide variety of experimental and computational approaches, the doping ability of these Wheland Complexes with B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 are characterized for five novel diketopyrrolopyrrole-ethylenedioxythiophene (DPP-EDOT)-based conjugated polymers. The electrical properties are a strong function of the specific conjugated molecule constituting the adduct, rather than acidic protons generated via hydrolysis of B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 , serving as the oxidant. It is highly probable that certain repeat units/segments form adduct structures in p -type conjugated polymers which act as intermediates for conjugated polymer doping. Electronic and optical properties are consistent with the increase in hole-donating ability of polymers with their cumulative donor strengths. The doped film of polymer (DPP(EDOT) 2 -(EDOT) 2 ) exhibits exceptionally good thermal and air-storage stability. The highest conductivities, ≈300 and ≈200 S cm -1 , are achieved for DPP(EDOT) 2 -(EDOT) 2 doped with B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 and its Wheland complexes.

Development of Magnesium Borane Containing Solutions of Furans and Pyrroles as Reversible Liquid Hydrogen Carriers (Final Technical Report)

The objective of this project was the development of a two-way liquid hydrogen carrier having a greater energy efficiency and lower delivery costs than either existing hydrogen carriers or conventional compressed H 2 gas transport technology. It was hypothesized that a hydrogen carrier consisting of solutions of furans and pyrroles containing Mg(BH 4 ) 2 and pincer complex catalyst, would have more than twice the volumetric available hydrogen density of the conventional two-way liquid hydrogen carrier, methylcyclohexane. Most notably the envisioned liquid hydrogen carrier would: 1) maintain high product selectivity through multiple cycles of dehydrogenation and hydrogenation; and 2) undergo rapid dehydrogenation and re-hydrogenation. The project was specifically aimed at the demonstration of at least one LOHC solution of Mg(BH 4 ) 2 and pincer catalyst that releases ≥ 50 g H 2 /L at ≤ 200 °C upon dehydrogenation and undergoes ≥ 25% rehydrogenation under 100 atm of H 2 at ≤ 200 °C.

Accurate ab initio quartic force fields for borane and BeH2

The quartic force fields of BH3 and BeH2 have been computed ab initio using an augmented coupled cluster (CCSD(T)) method and basis sets of spdf and spdfg quality. For BH3, the computed spectroscopic constants are in very good agreement with recent experimental data, and definitively confirm misassignments in some older work, in agreement with recent ab initio studies. Using the computed spectroscopic constants, the rovibrational partition function for both molecules has been constructed using a modified direct numerical summation algorithm, and JANAF-style thermochemical tables are presented.
