Catalytic dehydrogenation of amine borane complexes

A method of generating hydrogen includes the steps of providing an amine borane (AB) complex, at least one hydrogen generation catalyst, and a solvent, and mixing these components. Hydrogen is generated. The hydrogen produced is high purity hydrogen suitable for PEM fuel cells. A hydrolytic in-situ hydrogen generator includes a first compartment that contains an amine borane (AB) complex, a second container including at least one hydrogen generation catalyst, wherein the first or second compartment includes water or other hydroxyl group containing solvent. A connecting network permits mixing contents in the first compartment with contents in the second compartment, wherein high purity hydrogen is generated upon mixing. At least one flow controller is provided for controlling a flow rate of the catalyst or AB complex.

Accurate ab initio quartic force fields for borane and BeH2

The quartic force fields of BH3 and BeH2 have been computed ab initio using an augmented coupled cluster (CCSD(T)) method and basis sets of spdf and spdfg quality. For BH3, the computed spectroscopic constants are in very good agreement with recent experimental data, and definitively confirm misassignments in some older work, in agreement with recent ab initio studies. Using the computed spectroscopic constants, the rovibrational partition function for both molecules has been constructed using a modified direct numerical summation algorithm, and JANAF-style thermochemical tables are presented.

Analysis of boron carbides' electronic structure

The electronic properties of boron-rich icosahedral clusters were studied as a means of understanding the electronic structure of the icosahedral borides such as boron carbide. A lower bound was estimated on bipolaron formation energies in B12 and B11C icosahedra, and the associated distortions. While the magnitude of the distortion associated with bipolaron formation is similar in both cases, the calculated formation energies differ greatly, formation being much more favorable on B11C icosahedra. The stable positions of a divalent atom relative to an icosahedral borane was also investigated, with the result that a stable energy minimum was found when the atom is at the center of the borane, internal to the B12 cage. If incorporation of dopant atoms into B12 cages in icosahedral boride solids is feasible, novel materials might result. In addition, the normal modes of a B12H12 cluster, of the C2B10 cage in para-carborane, and of a B12 icosahedron of reduced (D sub 3d) symmetry, such as is found in the icosahedral borides, were calculated. The nature of these vibrational modes will be important in determining, for instance, the character of the electron-lattice coupling in the borides, and in analyzing the lattice contribution to the thermal conductivity.

Conceptual study of hypersonic airbreathing missiles

The purpose of this paper is to report recent results of an in-house conceptual study to evaluate the performance potential and research needs of airbreathing hypersonic missiles. An alkylated-borane (noncryogenic) fueled, dual-mode, ramjet/scramjet propulsion system structured with a Rene 41 inlet and a carbon-carbon combustor was assumed along with a Lockalloy heat sink fuselage structure and beryllium wings and control surfaces. Performance for an air-launched baseline missile with a 961 pound staging weight containing a 100 pound payload indicated excellent long range cruise, moderate acceleration and high maneuverability potential. A sizing study indicates that Mach 6 cruise ranges of the order of 2500 nautical miles for payloads of 300 pounds can be achieved with moderate size missile carry weights (9000 lbs.). Aerodynamic heating analyses indicate that unprotected heat-sink structures with internal insulation are feasible for ranges of several hundred miles. For ranges of several thousands of miles a multiwall radiation shield (Inconel/titanium) was selected for protection of the internally insulated heat sink structure.

Evaluation of on-board hydrogen storage methods f or high-speed aircraft

Hydrogen is the fuel of choice for hypersonic vehicles. Its main disadvantage is its low liquid and solid density. This increases the vehicle volume and hence the drag losses during atmospheric flight. In addition, the dry mass of the vehicle is larger due to larger vehicle structure and fuel tankage. Therefore it is very desirable to find a fuel system with smaller fuel storage requirements without deteriorating the vehicle performance substantially. To evaluate various candidate fuel systems, they were first screened thermodynamically with respect to their energy content and cooling capacities. To evaluate the vehicle performance with different fuel systems, a simple computer model is developed to compute the vehicle parameters such as the vehicle volume, dry mass, effective specific impulse, and payload capacity. The results indicate that if the payload capacity (or the gross lift-off mass) is the most important criterion, only slush hydrogen and liquid hydrogen - liquid methane gel shows better performance than the liquid hydrogen vehicle. If all the advantages of a smaller vehicle are considered and a more accurate mass analysis can be performed, other systems using endothermic fuels such as cyclohexane, and some boranes may prove to be worthy of further consideration.

The Synthesis and Testing of Highly Strained Cyclic and Polycyclic Molecules as Hypergolic Fuels

Increasing fuel efficiency has been a goal for chemists for several decades. Particularly, a more efficient fuel can increase the range of liquid-hydrocarbon-fueled ram-jets and cruise missiles. A storable high-energy fuel that spontaneously ignites upon addition of an oxidizer is defined as a hypergolic fuel. Hypergolic storable fuels provide an increase in energy per unit volume of fuel and eliminate the need for an external ignition system. Several classes of functionalized hydrocarbons such as amines, boranes, and phosphines are known to be hypergolic with nitric acid oxidizers, but only hydrazine and its simple derivatives5 have been found to exhibit true hypergolic behavior with H2O2. Hydrogen peroxide is a good candidate for an oxidizer due to its reduced toxicity and improved storage capability. Hydrazine-based fuels are expensive, highly corrosive, and toxic, thus providing the need for investigation of other fuels that may be hypergolic with H2O2. Strained hydrocarbons have been studied as high-density fuels. Some examples including benzvalene and cubane, exhibit an increase in heat of combustion as the density of the fuel increases. Many conventional hydrocarbon fuels, such as JP-5 and JP-10, show a decrease in heat of combustion as density of the fuel increases. Strained hydrocarbons can therefore increase the range of the missile by increasing the combustion efficiency per volume of fuel. The goal of this research is to investigate hypergolic behavior of strained hydrocarbons by adding an amine functional group which has been found to hypergolic with nitric acid oxidizers. N,N-Dimethyl-[3]-triangulane-7-methylamine (l), cyclopropylamines (2), cyclobutylamines (3), propylamines (4), and butylamines (5) were synthesized and investigated. The amino group should react with oxygen, providing the initiation step for ring decomposition. The highly exothermic reactions will accumulate energy and potentially lead to spontaneous ignition of the fuel. Triangulanes possess high strain energy, while the less strained cyclopropane and cyclobutanes are more volatile and may show shorter ignition times.

190-GHz radiation from a quasioptical Josephson junction array

At 190 GHz, 0.36 micro W has been detected from an 11 x 58 array of niobium Josephson junctions. The power is radiated directly into free space above the surface of the two-dimensional array of junctions. Detection is made by a commercial bolometer outside the array cryostat. The junctions in the array are closely spaced in the y-dimension, but spaced by more than one-half wavelength in the x-direction. This asymmetry results in mutual phase-locking between adjacent junctions suitable for the production of y-polarized radiation. The resonance and asymmetry also result in a reasonable impedance match between the Josephson junctions and the free-space radiation mode.
