Photonic generation of millimeter-wave ultra-wideband monocycle signal using up-conversion based on stimulated Brillouin scattering effect

We propose a novel scheme for photonic generation of millimeter-wave (MMW) ultra-wideband monocycle signal free of strong local oscillation (LO) and low-frequency component. A theory and a mathematical model are built to investigate the proposed scheme. Firstly, a differentiator is implemented using a dual-drive Mach–Zehnder modulator to attain monocycle pulses by differentiating a series of Gauss pulses. Subsequently, a dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator and stimulated Brillouin scattering effect are employed to realize single-sideband modulation for up-converting the monocycle pulses to the MMW band. In the calculation, the generated signal is centered at 26 GHz with 10-dB bandwidth of 7 GHz and its power efficiency is about 50.08%. In addition, on–off keying modulation, amplitude modulation (PAM) and pulse position modulation monocycle pulses are generated. The spectrum of the generated signal meets with the FCC mask efficiently, so this technique has a potential application in MMW radar communication systems.

Self-focusing of cosh-Gaussian laser beam and its effect on the excitation of ion-acoustic wave and stimulated Brillouin backscattering in collisionless plasma

An analytical and numerical study has been carried out for self-focusing of an intense cosh-Gaussian laser beam in collisionless plasma and its impact on the excitation of ion-acoustic wave and stimulated Brillouin backscattering process. The analytical model has been developed under Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin and paraxial ray approximations. The nonlinearities of ponderomotive force on electron and the relativistic oscillation of the electron mass have been used in this study. The nonlinear differential equations have been set up for the beam width parameters of the main beam, ion-acoustic wave, backscattered wave and back reflectivity of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). These equations have been solved numerically for different values of decentred parameter (b), relative plasma density (ω{sub p0}/ω{sub 0}) and incident laser intensity (a). The results have been compared with only relativistic nonlinearity and Gaussian profile of laser beam. The focusing of laser beam, ion-acoustic wave and scattered wave are found to be strong under relativistic-ponderomotive regime compared to only relativistic regime. Further, it is observed that focusing/intensity of main laser beam, ion acoustic wave and SBS back reflectivity increases with increasing the values of b and ω{sub p0}/ω{sub 0}. Itis also found that back reflectivity of SBS process gets suppressed with the increase in the value of a. This study may be useful in laser induced fusion scheme where back scattering of SBS plays very important role.

Erbium gain effects on Stokes signal performance in a Fabry–Perot Brillouin Erbium fiber laser

The effect of the Erbium gain on the Stokes signal performance is experimentally presented in this paper. Linear Brilllouin Erbium fiber laser cavity is tested under different 1480 nm pump power ranges (0–125 mW). Different Brillouin pump (Bp) power values of 2, 4 and 6 dBm are used in this study. Stokes signal net gain and threshold power are recorded at all generated Stokes signals for these Bp powers values. 2 dBm Bp power shows higher net gain, low threshold, large Stokes numbers and low required 1480 nm pump power compared to 4 and 6 dBm. Up to 8.3 dB net gain, threshold of − 10.3 dBm, 24 Stokes signals and with a maximum 1480 nm pump power of 92.2 mW are recorded for 2 dBm Bp power. Stokes signal threshold is recorded at the near end of the single mode fiber at which Nth order Stokes is generated.

Effect of frequency detuning on Brillouin lasing in microcavities

We have theoretically investigated Brillouin lasing in microcavities in the case when the Brillouin shift and the intermode spacing of the microcavity do not coincide. It is shown that, despite the rise of the lasing threshold, a significant increase in the Brillouin signal intensity can be achieved in this case compared to the resonance one. A necessary condition for this effect is to select an optimal value of detuning of the pump radiation frequency from the frequency of the corresponding microcavity mode. The result of increasing the lasing threshold is also a narrowing of the Brillouin signal lasing range in the nonresonant case, which leads to a decrease in the signal noise level provided the detuning value is optimally selected. Analytical calculations are confirmed by the results of numerical modelling. (paper)

Wideband tunable up-converting optoelectronic oscillator based on gain–loss compensation technology and stimulated Brillouin scattering

An optically wideband tunable up-converting optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering and gain–loss compensation is demonstrated and theoretically analyzed. In the proposed structure, Brillouin narrowband filter technique is implemented by introducing two pump lights with the frequency interval twice the Brillouin frequency shift (v{sub b}). The overlapping of the gain and the loss spectrum is used to realize a wideband tunable OEO. As a consequence, the tunability of the wideband of the output microwave signal at f{sub m}+2v{sub b} from 22.4 to 61.4 GHz can be realized by changing the signal under testing from 1 to 40 GHz. In addition, the transfer function of the system is given and the single sideband (SSB) phase noise is also evaluated theoretically. And the theoretical simulated the SSB phase noise is − 116.1 dBc/Hz at the 10 kHz offset when the f{sub m} = 25 GHz. Not only the OEO can convert a low-frequency IF signal to a high-frequency signal without introducing any high-Q electrical filter, but the frequency of the output signal is high enough and widely tunable. Because of the high frequency tunable capacity, the up-converting OEO might have a potential application in radar communication and millimeter wave generation systems.

Interpreting pulse-shape effects in pump-probe spectroscopies

The effect of the pulse-shape on pump-probe spectroscopies is examined for the simplest model of noninteracting fermions on an infinite-dimensional hypercubic lattice. The probe-modified density of states follows the time evolution of the pump and displays narrowing and Floquet-like sidebands at the pump maximum, whereas the photoelectron spectra are also strongly affected by the nonequilibrium occupation of the single-particle states due to the excitation from the pump. The nonequilibrium Raman cross section is derived, and the nonresonant one in both the A 1g and B 1g symmetries contains a number of peaks at the pump maximum, which can be attributed to an interference effect or Brillouin scattering off the time variations of the stress tensor. Both the "measured" occupation of single-particle states and the ratio of Stokes to anti-Stokes peaks are strongly modified by the probe-pulse width, which must be included in the interpretation of experimental results.

The effects of multispecies Hohlraum walls on stimulated Brillouin scattering, Hohlraum dynamics, and beam propagation

We report experiments and simulations have been conducted to investigate the efficacy of Ta 2 O 5 -lined Hohlraum walls at reducing stimulated Brillouin backscattering (SBS) as well as any subsequent effects on the Hohlraum dynamics and capsule implosions in indirect drive experiments at the National Ignition Facility. Using a 1.1 MJ 400 TW, 351 nm, shaped laser pulse, we measure a 5× reduction in SBS power in the peak of the pulse from the wall on the outer 50° cone beams. The SBS spectrum indicates a reduction in the high-Z spectral signature when using multispecies wall materials. Detailed hydrodynamic simulations were performed using different heat conduction models with flux limiters. Additional simulations were performed on the plasma maps using the 3D parallel paraxial code pF3D to compare backscatter powers between the pure Au and Ta 2 O 5 -lined Hohlraums. Further analysis, using hydrodynamically equivalent plasmas, shows that the SBS reduction is clearly a result of the added ion Landau damping caused by the oxygen ions and not from differences in plasma conditions. The experimental and simulation results also show an increase in the wall plasma expansion when using the Ta 2 O 5 liner leading to a 70% more oblate implosion.

Ultra-Long Distance BOTDA Sensor System Employing Hybrid Amplification and Advanced Noise Reduction Techniques

Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA) sensor systems play a pivotal role in distributed sensing, which enables precise measurements of strain and temperature across extensive fiber lengths. This research offers a comprehensive strategy to extend the sensing range of BOTDA systems beyond tens of kilometers while maintaining high spatial resolutions. Such enhanced sensing is realized through the integration of distributed Raman amplification, inline amplification using erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA), and advanced noise reduction techniques. Optimizing Raman pump and probe wave profiles ensures the robustness of Brillouin scattering signals, effectively countering attenuation-induced losses. Additionally, enhancing weak Brillouin signals by strategically placing EDFAs at optimal fiber locations keeps sensor sensitivity high. Leveraging inherent redundancy in measured data as a function of frequency and fiber distance, the non-local means (NLM) filter removes noise while preserving essential physical information. In summary, this research has shown a holistic exploration of extending BOTDA’s distance sensing capabilities up to 150 km with spatial resolutions of 8 meters.

Low-energy magnons in the chiral ferrimagnet Cu 2 OSeO 3 : A coarse-grained approach

We report a comprehensive neutron scattering study of low energy magnetic excitations in the breathing pyrochlore helimagnetic Cu2OSeO3. Fully documenting the four lowest energy magnetic modes that leave the ferrimagnetic configuration of the “strong tetrahedra” intact (| ℏ ω| < 13 meV), we find gapless quadratic dispersion at the Γ point for energies above 0.2 meV, two doublets separated by 1.6(2) meV at the R point, and a bounded continuum at the X point. Our constrained rigid spin cluster model relates these features to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions and the incommensurate helical ground state. Combining conventional spin wave theory with a spin cluster form factor accurately reproduces the measured equal time structure factor through multiple Brillouin zones. An effective spin Hamiltonian describing complex anisotropic intercluster interactions is obtained.

Nondegenerate surface pair density wave in the kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5 : Application to vestigial orders

On the Sb layer of the kagome superconductor CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5 , pair density wave states have been observed. When the high-temperature charge orderings are treated as static backgrounds, these pair density wave (PDW) states exhibit the same wave vector in the effective two-dimensional Brillouin zone. Interestingly, these PDW states break the same symmetry on the surface. Considering the presence of this nondegenerate PDW, we investigate the implications for the possible existence of a vestigial charge-4⁢ e phase with a nonzero center-of-mass momentum. To distinguish between different vestigial phases, we propose scanning tunneling microscopy experiments. Here we aim to provide insights into the nature of the vestigial phases and their distinct characteristics in CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5 . This research sheds light on the interplay between PDW states, charge orderings, and superconductivity of the kagome superconductor.

Self-focusing of pseudo-nondiffracting laser beams with circular symmetry in collisional plasma under two ramp density profiles

The self-focusing of zeroth-order Bessel–Gaussian beams through plasma under exponential and tangential ramp density profiles is investigated theoretically by using Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin approximation. To examine the effect of plasma density ramp on self-focusing of the studied beams, the evolution of beam-width parameter with normalized propagation distance is reported for diverse laser beams and plasma parameters. The results reveal that stronger self-focusing is obtained with exponential ramp density profile as compared to the tangential density ramp one.

Electronic structure of p -type transparent conducting oxide CuAlO 2

We report copper-based delafossite oxides are excellent candidates for the p-type transparent conducting oxide (TCO), which is essential in realizing transparent semiconductor applications. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we report the low-energy electronic structure of CuAlO 2 . We found that the band structure near the valence band top is characterized by hole bands with their maxima along the Brillouin zone boundary. Furthermore, the effective masses along the Γ–M and Γ–K directions were found to be (0.6 ± 0.1) m0 and (0.9 ± 0.1) m 0 , respectively, which impose an important benchmark against the existing band calculations.

The competing effects of wave amplitude and collisions on multi-ion species suppression of stimulated Brillouin scattering in inertial confinement fusion Hohlraums

Reduction in stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) from National Ignition Facility Hohlraums has been predicted through the use of multi-ion species materials on Hohlraum walls. This approach to controlling SBS is based upon introducing a lighter ion species to the heavier ion species Hohlraum wall in order to greatly increase the ion Landau damping of ion acoustic waves (IAWs). In a collisionless plasma, if the IAWs driven by SBS reach sufficient amplitudes, this increased damping is reduced or even eliminated by ion trapping in the IAWs. Here, the nonlinear behavior of IAWs is simulated with a multi-ion species Vlasov code, including interspecies ion–ion collisions, self-collisions, and electron–ion pitch-angle collisions. The effect of collisions on the trapping of ions and electrons in a large-amplitude IAW is studied in a regime of relevance to current Inertial Confinement Fusion experiments. Our simulations show that collisions can scatter trapped particles out of resonance with the IAW, suppressing trapping and helping to maintain an effective Landau damping of the IAW. The IAW amplitude required to trap particles in the presence of strong collisions is estimated analytically. These estimates are tested for strongly damped IAWs in tantalum oxide and pure helium plasmas. Here our simulations show that, above a threshold amplitude, the damping is reduced by an amount inversely proportional to the wave amplitude. Thus, the success of controlling SBS using a multispecies plasma may depend sensitively on laser power and pulse length.

Research on stability and uniformity of multi-wavelength Brillouin-erbium fiber laser based on FWM

In this paper, we experimentally and theoretically investigate the stability and uniformity of multi-wavelength Brillouin-erbium fiber laser based on four-wave mixing (FWM). Multi-wavelength generation is limited by cross-gain saturation between different wavelengths from homogeneous broadening of erbium-doped fiber. Modeling coupled-mode equation for FWM and analyzing the influence of FWM on multi-wavelength generation. 16 orders Brillouin Stokes (BS) waves with a wavelength spacing of 0.084 nm are obtained experimentally within a 3 dB bandwidth by the FWM effect in a 100 m highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF), power distribution of each laser is uniform and peak power fluctuation is less than 1.184 dB within a 10 dB bandwidth, the outputs exhibit good time stability and uniformity. Compared with the same configuration, the laser without HNLF has only 9 orders stable BS waves within 3 dB bandwidth, and high-order Stokes wave shows significant waveform jitter and power fluctuation.

Three-dimensional higher-order saddle-point-induced flatbands in Co-based kagome metals

The saddle point (Van Hove singularity) exhibits a divergent density of states in two-dimensional systems, leading to fascinating phenomena such as strong correlations and unconventional superconductivity, yet it is seldom observed in three-dimensional (3D) systems. In this work we find two types of 3D higher-order saddle points (HOSPs) in emerging 3D kagome metals YbCo 6⁢ Ge 6 and MgCo 6 ⁢Ge 6 . Both HOSPs exhibit a singularity in their density of states, which is significantly enhanced compared to the ordinary saddle point. The HOSP near the Fermi energy generates a flatband extending a large area in the Brillouin zone, potentially amplifying the correlation effect and fostering electronic instabilities. Two types of HOSPs exhibit distinct robustness upon element substitution and lattice distortions in these kagome compounds. Our work paves the way for engineering exotic band structures, such as saddle points and flatbands, and exploring interesting phenomena in Co-based kagome materials.

Instability Increments of Stimulated Mandelshtam–Brillouin Scattering in a Bounded Region with Allowance for Collisions

The problem of Mandelstam–Brillouin scattering in the region bounded in the direction of pump wave propagation and infinite in the transverse direction is considered. Such situations can arise, for example, in plasma heating or diagnostic problems. Since the time of scattered radiation escape for the examined geometry upon scattering at a certain angle increases substantially, this effect compensates for a decrease in the nonlinear feedback coefficient upon oblique scattering and leads to instability development. Since the convective losses at scattering angles close to π/2 are small, collisional absorption of waves plays an important role in this case. The instability increments are calculated taking into account not only the convective losses, but also the collisional wave attenuation.

Crossover from Kondo to Fermi-liquid behavior induced by high magnetic field in 1 T -VTe 2 single crystals

The magnetic and magnetotransport properties of metallic 1T -VTe 2 single crystals were investigated at temperatures from 1.3 to 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 35 T. Upon applying a high magnetic field, it is found that the electrical resistivity displays a crossover from the logarithmic divergence of the single-impurity Kondo effect to the Fermi liquid behavior at low temperatures. The Brillouin scale of the negative magnetoresistivity above the Kondo temperature T K = 12 K indicates that the Kondo features originate from intercalated V ions, with S = 1/2. Both magnetic susceptibility and the Hall effect show an anomaly around T K . By using the modified Hamann expression we successfully describe the temperature-dependent resistivity under various magnetic fields, which shows the characteristic peak below T K due to the splitting of the Kondo resonance.

Interaction effects in graphene in a weak magnetic field

A weak perpendicular magnetic field, B, breaks the chiral symmetry of each valley in the electron spectrum of graphene, preserving the overall chiral symmetry in the Brillouin zone. Here we explore the consequences of this symmetry breaking for the interaction effects in graphene. In particular, we demonstrate that the electron-electron interaction lifetime acquires an anomalous B dependence. Also, the ballistic zero-bias anomaly, δv(ω), where ω is the energy measured from the Fermi level, emerges at a weak B and has the form δv(B) ~ B 2 /ω 2 . Temperature dependence of the magnetic-field corrections to the thermodynamic characteristics of graphene is also anomalous. We discuss experimental manifestations of the effects predicted. The microscopic origin of the B-field sensitivity is an extra phase acquired by the electron wave function resulting from the chirality-induced pseudospin precession.
