Structural design considerations for the beam transmission optical system

The paper describes the JPL study leading to a baseline design of the Beam Transmission Optical System (BTOS), designed for the delivery of laser energy from earth to space targets. The study identified the driving environmental and functional requirements; developed a conceptual design of the BTOS telescope; and performed static, thermal distortion, and model analyses to verify that these requirements are met. The study also identified major areas of concern which should be investigated further.

Small scale adaptive optics experiment systems engineering

Assessment of the current technology relating to the laser power beaming system which in full scale is called the Beam Transmission Optical System (BTOS). Evaluation of system integration efforts are being conducted by the various government agencies and industry. Concepts are being developed for prototypes of adaptive optics for a BTOS.

Laser power beaming system analyses

The successful demonstration of the PAMELA adaptive optics hardware and the fabrication of the BTOS truss structure were identified by the program office as the two most critical elements of the NASA power beaming program, so it was these that received attention during this program. Much of the effort was expended in direct program support at MSFC, but detailed technical analyses of the AMP deterministic control scheme and the BTOS truss structure (both the JPL design and a spherical one) were prepared and are attached, and recommendations are given.

Fabrication and Testing of a Large Primary Reflector Structure

This paper discusses the fabrication considerations and proposed testing concepts related to a large twelve meter, graphite-epoxy space truss that is being developed to provide support of the primary mirror system for the Beam Transmission Optical System (BTOS).

Horizon Missions Methodology - Using new paradigms to overcome conceptual blocks to innovation

The Horizon Mission Methodology was developed to provide a systematic analytical approach for evaluating and identifying technological requirements for breakthrough technology options (BTOs) and for assessing their potential to provide revolutionary capabilities for advanced space missions. Here, attention is given to the further use of the methodology as a new tool for a broader range of studies dealing with technology innovation and new technology paradigms.
