Two Polymorphs of BaZn 2 P 2 : Crystal Structures, Phase Transition, and Transport Properties

Here, the novel α-BaZn 2 P 2 structural polymorph has been synthesized and structurally characterized for the first time. Its structure, elu-cidated from single crystal X-ray diffraction, indicates that the compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic α-BaCu 2 S 2 structure type, with unit cell parameters a = 9.7567(14) Å, b = 4.1266(6) Å, and c = 10.6000(15) Å. With β-BaZn 2 P 2 being previously iden-tified as belonging to the ThCr 2 Si 2 family, and with the precedent of structural phase transitions between the α-BaCu 2 S 2 type and the ThCr 2 Si 2 type, the potential for the pattern to be extended to the two different structural forms of BaZn 2 P 2 was explored. Thermal analysis suggest that a first order phase transition occurs at ~1123 K, whereby the low-temperature orthorhombic α-phase transforms to a high-temperature tetragonal β-BaZn 2 P 2 ; the structure of which was also studied and confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Preliminary transport properties and band structure calculations indicate that α-BaZn 2 P 2 is a p-type, narrow-gap semiconductor with a direct bandgap (Eg) of 0.5 eV. The Seebeck coefficient, S(T), for the material increases steadily from the room temperature value of 119 µV/K to 184 µV/K at 600 K. The electrical resistivity of α-BaZn 2 P 2 is relatively high, on the order of 40 mΩ·cm, and the ρ(T) dependence shows gradual decrease upon heating. Such behavior is comparable to those of the typical semimetals or degenerate semiconductors. Although the observed values of the as-synthesized samples are not optimal, the carrier concentration can apparently be tuned to fall between the values of metals and semiconductors, thus providing an open window for optimizing this phase towards achieving an enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit zT. The calculated indirect band gap for the β-BaZn 2 P 2 phase is Eg = 0.03 eV which is about an order of magnitude lower than that of α-BaZn 2 P 2 . It is expected that the cage-like structural motif and layered structure possessed by α-BaZn 2 P 2 and β-BaZn 2 P 2 phases, respectively, would promote the realiza-tion of a low thermal conductivity in both compounds.

The Crystal Structure of BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 Featuring Brownmillerite‐Type Layers

Abstract A bimetallic hydroxychalcogenide, BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 , was synthesized through hydrothermal pouch methods. The single crystal X‐ray diffraction and electron diffraction indicates that the phase crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma and is composed of anionic layers [ZnSe 3/3 (OH) 1/1 ] − that are separated and charged balanced by Ba 2+ cations. The [ZnSe 3/3 (OH) 1/1 ] – layer comprises two unique Zn sites, which form interpenetrating zigzag chains with an in‐plane dipole moment and adopts a brownmillerite‐type structural motif. The adjacent layers contain tetrahedrally coordinated Zn chains of opposite handedness related by an inversion center, which cancel the microscopic dipoles to minimize the macroscopic electric polarization. The adoption of a brownmillerite structural motif in BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 can be rationalized by the distinct charge difference between Se 2− and OH − anions, which creates a sufficient dipole moment in the ZnSe 3 (OH) tetrahedra to allow the occurrence of twisted chains. FTIR spectroscopy confirms the existence of OH − anions and DFT calculations indicate that BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 is a semiconductor with a direct band gap. This work expands the chemistry of the brownmillerite family from traditional homoanionic oxides to multianion hydroxychalcogenides, offering a new opportunity to explore tunable structural complexity for better design of functional materials.

POWTEX visits POWGEN

The high-intensity time-of-flight (TOF) neutron diffractometer POWTEX for powder and texture analysis is currently being built prior to operation in the eastern guide hall of the research reactor FRM II at Garching close to Munich, Germany. Because of the world-wide 3 He crisis in 2009, the authors promptly initiated the development of 3 He-free detector alternatives that are tailor-made for the requirements of large-area diffractometers. Herein is reported the 2017 enterprise to operate one mounting unit of the final POWTEX detector on the neutron powder diffractometer POWGEN at the Spallation Neutron Source located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA. As a result, presented here are the first angular- and wavelength-dependent data from the POWTEX detector, unfortunately damaged by a 50 g shock but still operating, as well as the efforts made both to characterize the transport damage and to successfully recalibrate the voxel positions in order to yield nonetheless reliable measurements. Also described is the current data reduction process using the PowderReduceP2D algorithm implemented in Mantid [Arnold et al. (2014). Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. A , 764 , 156–166]. The final part of the data treatment chain, namely a novel multi-dimensional refinement using a modified version of the GSAS-II software suite [Toby & Von Dreele (2013). J. Appl. Cryst. 46 , 544–549], is compared with a standard data treatment of the same event data conventionally reduced as TOF diffraction patterns and refined with the unmodified version of GSAS-II . This involves both determining the instrumental resolution parameters using POWGEN's powdered diamond standard sample and the refinement of a friendly-user sample, BaZn(NCN) 2 . Although each structural parameter on its own looks similar upon comparing the conventional (1D) and multi-dimensional (2D) treatments, also in terms of precision, a closer view shows small but possibly significant differences. For example, the somewhat suspicious proximity of the a and b lattice parameters of BaZn(NCN) 2 crystallizing in Pbca as resulting from the 1D refinement (0.008 Å) is five times less pronounced in the 2D refinement (0.038 Å). Similar features are found when comparing bond lengths and bond angles, e.g. the two N—C—N units are less differently bent in the 1D results (173 and 175°) than in the 2D results (167 and 173°). The results are of importance not only for POWTEX but also for other neutron TOF diffractometers with large-area detectors, like POWGEN at the SNS or the future DREAM beamline at the European Spallation Source.
