Coherent Electronic Band Structure of TiTe 2 /TiSe 2 Moiré Bilayer

Here, a van der Waals bonded moiré bilayer formed by sequential growth of TiSe 2 and TiTe 2 monolayers exhibits emergent electronic structure as evidenced by angle-resolved photoemission band mapping. The two monolayers adopt the same lattice orientation but incommensurate lattice constants. Despite the lack of translational symmetry, sharp dispersive bands are observed. The dispersion relations appear distinct from those for the component monolayers alone. Theoretical calculations illustrate the formation of composite bands by coherent electronic coupling despite the weak interlayer bonding, which leads to band renormalization and energy shifts.

Building interface bonding and shield for stable Li-rich Mn-based oxide cathode

Implementation of Li-rich Mn-based oxide cathode with high-energy-density has been restrained by capacity/voltage degradation that results from irreversible lattice oxygen loss and structure rearrangements. To resolve these challenges, in this work, Li 1.2 Mn 0.54 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 O 2 encapsulated by amorphous Co x B (CB-LRM) is rationally designed via autocatalytic plating for highly reversible cationic/anionic hybrid cathode material. Band coherency is ingeniously evoked by interface-reconstruction between bulk structure and amorphous coating layer, which lower the energy of O $2p$ states. Furthermore, this is associated with strengthened orbital hybridization of O $2p$-Mn $3d$ and increased formation energy of oxygen vacancy, which mitigates the lattice oxygen loss considerably. Additionally, interface shielding effects that protect electrode against electrolyte corrosion and the reduction of surface oxygen are also present with fully coverage of amorphous Co x B coating layer. As a result, the as-designed CBLRM cathode exhibits excellent cycle stability after 100 loops with only 0.154% per cycle capacity fade and improved voltage degradation. Given this, this work provides a potential avenue for rational design of lattice oxygen-based electrode materials with high-energy-density.

Prospects for Astrobiology and Technosignature Searches with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will map sources in multiband colour--variability space. We present a prototype coherence-based framework for astrobiology and technosignature searches, in which candidates are treated as structured departures from natural astrophysical manifolds rather than isolated photometric outliers. We illustrate the framework with three simulated cases: five Kuiper Belt Object (KBO) surface/activity states, a grid of 649 synthetic exoplanet spectra with vegetation-red-edge-like (VRE) perturbations, and 500 synthetic multiband light curves, each projected into LSST-like observable space and analysed through colour geometry, chromatic variability, and cross-band coherence. Key results include a full-colour Mahalanobis distance $D\approx5.1$ for the weak-coma KBO state (${\sim}5σ$ in the five-dimensional colour vector), an indicative VRE coherence threshold at $f_{\rm crit}\approx0.13$, and an idealised stacking forecast reaching $5σ$ under optimistic assumptions. We show, using a small Gaia~DR3 stellar sample, that stellar colour and photometric stability may inform the prioritisation of Galactic regions for applying such coherence diagnostics.

Quadratic strong coupling in AlN Kerr cavity solitons

Photonic platforms with χ (2) nonlinearity offer new degrees of freedom for Kerr frequency comb development. Here, we demonstrate Kerr soliton generation at 1550 nm with phase-matched quadratic coupling to the 775 nm harmonic band in a single AlN microring and thus the formation of dual-band mode-locked combs. In the strong quadratic coupling regime where the χ (2) phase-matching window overlaps the pump mode, the pump-to-harmonic-comb conversion efficiency is optimized. However, the strong quadratic coupling also drastically modifies the Kerr comb generation dynamics and decreases the probability of soliton generation. By engineering the χ (2) phase-matching wavelength, we are able to achieve a balance between high conversion efficiency and high soliton formation rate under the available pump power and microring quality factors. Our numerical simulations confirm the experimental observations. These findings provide guidance on tailoring single-cavity dual-band coherent comb sources.

Enhanced Coherence in Superconducting Circuits via Band Engineering

In superconducting circuits interrupted by Josephson junctions, the dependence of the energy spectrum on offset charges on different islands is 2e periodic through the Aharonov-Casher effect and resembles a crystal band structure that reflects the symmetries of the Josephson potential. We show that higher-harmonic Josephson elements described by a cos(2φ) energy-phase relation provide an increased freedom to tailor the shape of the Josephson potential and design spectra featuring multiplets of flat bands and Dirac points in the charge Brillouin zone. Flat bands provide noise-insensitive energy levels, and consequently, engineering band pairs with flat spectral gaps can help improve the coherence of the system. We discuss a modified version of a flux qubit that achieves, in principle, no decoherence from charge noise and introduce a flux qutrit that shows a spin-1 Dirac spectrum and is simultaneously quite robust to both charge and flux noise.

We report the first O-band link with electrically reconfigurable intensity-modulation direct-detection (IMDD) and coherent operation using custom silicon photonic chips packaged with commercial electronic chips. Transmission below the KP4-FEC threshold is shown using commercial 53 Gbaud PAM4 digital signal processing (DSP) for 16QAM (200 Gbps/ λ ) and PAM4 (100 Gbps/ λ ). Efficient operation of the packaged full link at 12 and 11.2 pJ/bit is achieved for the PAM4 and 16QAM modes, respectively.

Broadband 2DES detection of vibrational coherence in the S x state of canthaxanthin

The nonadiabatic mechanism that mediates nonradiative decay of the bright S 2 state to the dark S 1 state of carotenoids involves population of a bridging intermediate state, S x , in several examples. The nature of S x remains to be determined definitively, but it has been recently suggested that S x corresponds to conformationally distorted molecules evolving along out-of-plane coordinates of the isoprenoid backbone near a low barrier between planar and distorted conformations on the S 2 potential surface. Here, the electronic and vibrational dynamics accompanying the formation of S x in toluene solutions of the ketocarotenoid canthaxanthin (CAN) are characterized with broadband two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) with 7.8 fs excitation pulses and detection of the linear polarization components of the third-order nonlinear optical signal. A stimulated-emission cross peak in the 2DES spectrum accompanies the formation of S x in <20 fs following excitation of the main absorption band. S x is prepared instantaneously, however, with excitation of hot-band transitions associated with distorted conformations of CAN’s isoprenoid backbone in the low frequency onset of the main absorption band. Vibrational coherence oscillation maps and modulated anisotropy transients show that S x undergoes displacements from the Franck–Condon S 2 state along out-of-plane coordinates as it passes to the S 1 state. The results are consistent with the conclusion that CAN’s carbonyl-substituted β-ionone rings impart an intramolecular charge-transfer character that frictionally slows the passage from S x to S 1 compared to carotenoids lacking carbonyl substitution. Despite the longer lifetime, the S 1 state of CAN is formed with retention of vibrational coherence after passing through a conical intersection seam with the S x state.

Role of Superlattice Phonons in Charge Localization Across Quantum Dot Arrays

Understanding charge transport in semiconductor quantum dot (QD) assemblies is important for developing the next generation of solar cells and light-harvesting devices based on QD technology. One of the key factors that governs the transport in such systems is related to the hybridization between the QDs. Recent experiments have successfully synthesized QD molecules, arrays, and assemblies by directly fusing the QDs, with enhanced hybridization leading to high carrier mobilities and coherent band-like electronic transport. Here, in this work, we theoretically investigate the electron transfer dynamics across a finite CdSe-CdS core-shell QD array, considering up to seven interconnected QDs in one dimension. We find that, even in the absence of structural and size disorder, electron transfer can become localized by the emergent low-frequency superlattice vibrational modes when the connecting neck between QDs is narrow. On the other hand, we also identify a regime where the same vibrational modes facilitate coherent electron transport when the connecting necks are wide. Overall, we elucidate the crucial effects of electronic and superlattice symmetries and their couplings when designing high-mobility devices based on QD superlattices.

Direct observation of coherence transfer and rotational-to-vibrational energy exchange in optically centrifuged CO2 super-rotors

Abstract Optical centrifuges are laser-based molecular traps that can rotationally accelerate molecules to energies rivalling or exceeding molecular bond energies. Here we report time and frequency-resolved ultrafast coherent Raman measurements of optically centrifuged CO 2 at 380 Torr spun to energies beyond its bond dissociation energy of 5.5 eV ( J max = 364, E rot = 6.14 eV, E rot / k B = 71, 200 K). The entire rotational ladder from J = 24 to J = 364 was resolved simultaneously which enabled a more accurate measurement of the centrifugal distortion constants for CO 2 . Remarkably, coherence transfer was directly observed, and time-resolved, during the field-free relaxation of the trap as rotational energy flowed into bending-mode vibrational excitation. Vibrationally excited CO 2 ( ν 2 > 3) was observed in the time-resolved spectra to populate after 3 mean collision times as a result of rotational-to-vibrational (R-V) energy transfer. Trajectory simulations show an optimal range of J for R-V energy transfer. Dephasing rates for molecules rotating up to 5.5 times during one collision were quantified. Very slow decays of the vibrational hot band rotational coherences suggest that they are sustained by coherence transfer and line mixing.

Band-limited photodetection of temporal coherence

The quantum theory of optical coherence plays a ubiquitous role in identifying optical emitters. An unequivocal identification, however, presumes that the photon number statistics is resolved from timing uncertainties. We demonstrate from first principle that the observed nth-order temporal coherence is a n-fold convolution of the instrument responses and the expected coherence. The consequence is detrimental in which the photon number statistics is masked from the unresolved coherence signatures. The experimental investigations are thus far consistent with the theory developed. We envision the present theory will mitigate the false identification of optical emitters and enlarge the coherence deconvolution to an arbitrary order.

Magnon-magnon coupling in an all-oxide insulator garnet Y 3 ⁢Fe 5 ⁢O 12 /Tm 3 ⁢Fe 5⁢ O 12 heterostructure

Hybrid magnonic systems have recently attracted significant attention due to their intriguing physics and potential applications in coherent information processing. In this regard, we have investigated magnon-magnon coupling in the all-oxide insulator garnet Y 3⁢ Fe 5⁢ O 12 (YIG)/Tm 3 ⁢Fe 5 ⁢O 12 (TmIG) heterostructure. The presence of an avoided mode crossing region between the ferromagnetic resonance modes of YIG and TmIG indicates interfacial exchange coupling. This all-insulator system enables interfacial coupling via magnon-magnon interactions. The mode crossing occurs at 𝑓 𝑐 = 6.88 GHz, corresponding to the minimal resonance separation between the two hybrid modes. The coupling strength is determined to be 78 MHz (or 2.8 mT), providing clear evidence of magnon-magnon coupling between the two Kittel modes in the YIG/TmIG insulator system at 200 K. As a result, these findings pave the way for engineering magnonic band structures, tunable coherent magnonic interactions, and nonreciprocal spin transport, which are crucial for advancing ultralow-power magnonic devices.

Observation of a massive phason in a charge-density-wave insulator

The lowest-lying fundamental excitation of an incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) material is widely believed to be a massless phason -- a collective modulation of the phase of the CDW order parameter. However, as first pointed out by Lee and Fukuyama, long-range Coulomb interactions should push the phason energy up to the plasma energy of the CDW condensate, resulting in a massive phason and a fully gapped spectrum. Whether such behavior occurs in a CDW system has been unresolved for more than four decades. Using time-domain THz emission spectroscopy, we investigate this issue in the material (TaSe 4 ) 2 I, a classical example of a quasi-one-dimensional CDW insulator. Upon transient photoexcitation at low temperatures, we find the material strikingly emits coherent, narrow-band THz radiation. The frequency, polarization and temperature-dependence of the emitted radiation imply the existence of a phason that acquires mass by coupling to long-range Coulomb interaction. Our observations constitute the first direct evidence of the massive "Lee-Fukuyama" phason and highlight the potential applicability of fundamental collective modes of correlated materials as compact and robust sources of THz radiation.

Multifunctional light beam source for surface slope measuring long trace profilers

To fully exploit the advantages of fourth-generation synchrotron light sources, diffraction-limited-storage-rings (DLSR) and fully coherent free electron lasers (FELs), beamline mirrors and diffraction grating must be of exceptional quality. To achieve the required mirror and grating quality, the metrology instrumentation and methods used to characterize these challenging optics and, even more so, optical assemblies must also offer exceptional functionality and performance. One of the most widely used slope measuring instruments for characterizing x-ray optics is the long trace profiler (LTP). The easily reconfigurable mechanical design of the LTP allows optimization of the profiler arrangement to the specifics of a particular metrology task. Here, we discuss the optical schematic, design, and performance of an original multifunctional light beam source that provides functional flexibility of the LTP optical sensor. With this source, the LTP can be easily reconfigured for measurements of x-ray mirrors or diffraction gratings that have widely different source coherence requirements. Usage of a source with a low degree of coherence for mirror metrology helps to suppress the LTP systematic errors due to spurious interference effects in the LTP optical elements. A high-coherence narrow-band source is used for groove-density-distribution characterization of x-ray diffraction gratings. The systematic error and spatial resolution of the LTP with the different sources is also measured and analyzed.

Observation of Quasiparticle Pair Production and Quantum Entanglement in Atomic Quantum Gases Quenched to an Attractive Interaction

We report observation of quasiparticle pair-production and characterize quantum entanglement created by a modulational instability in an atomic superfluid. By quenching the atomic interaction to attractive and then back to weakly repulsive, we produce correlated quasiparticles and monitor their evolution in a superfluid through evaluating the in situ density noise power spectrum, which essentially measures a 'homodyne' interference between ground state atoms and quasiparticles of opposite momenta. We observe large amplitude growth in the power spectrum and subsequent coherent oscillations in a wide spatial frequency band within our resolution limit, demonstrating coherent quasiparticle generation and evolution. Here, the spectrum is observed to oscillate below a quantum limit set by the Peres-Horodecki separability criterion of continuous-variable states, thereby confirming quantum entanglement between interaction quench-induced quasiparticles.

Carrier Mobility Modulation in Cu 2 Se Composites Using Coherent Cu 4 TiSe 4 Inclusions Leads to Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance

Carrier transport engineering in bulk semiconductors using inclusion phases often results in the deterioration of carrier mobility (μ) owing to enhanced carrier scattering at phase boundaries. Here, we show by leveraging the temperature-induced structural transition between the α-Cu 2 Se and β-Cu 2 Se polymorphs that the incorporation of Cu 4 TiSe 4 inclusions within the Cu 2 Se matrix results in a gradual large drop in the carrier mobility at temperatures below 400 K (α-Cu 2 Se), whereas the carrier mobility remains unchanged at higher temperatures, where the β-Cu 2 Se polymorph dominates. The sharp discrepancy in the electronic transport within the α-Cu 2 Se and β-Cu 2 Se matrices is associated with the formation of incoherent α-Cu 2 Se/Cu 4 TiSe 4 interfaces, owing to the difference in their atomic structures and lattice parameters, which results in enhanced carrier scattering. In contrast, the similarity of the Se sublattices between β-Cu 2 Se and Cu 4 TiSe 4 gives rise to coherent phase boundaries and good band alignment, which promote carrier transport across the interfaces. Interestingly, the different cation arrangements in Cu 4 TiSe 4 and β-Cu 2 Se contribute to enhanced phonon scattering at the interfaces, which leads to a reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity. The large reduction in the total thermal conductivity while preserving the high power factor of β-Cu 2 Se in the (1–x)Cu 2 Se/(x)Cu 4 TiSe 4 composites results in an improved ZT of 1.2 at 850 K, with an average ZT of 0.84 (500–850 K) for the composite with x = 0.01. Furthermore, this work highlights the importance of structural similarity between the matrix and inclusions when designing thermoelectric materials with improved energy conversion efficiency.

Conical intersection and coherent vibrational dynamics in alkyl iodides captured by attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy

The photodissociation dynamics of alkyl iodides along the C–I bond are captured by attosecond extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) transient absorption spectroscopy employing resonant ∼20 fs UV pump pulses. The methodology of previous experiments on CH3I [Chang et al., J. Chem. Phys. 154, 234301 (2021)] is extended to the investigation of a C–I bond-breaking reaction in the dissociative A-band of C2H5I, i-C3H7I, and t-C4H9I. Probing iodine 4d core-to-valence transitions in the XUV enables one to map wave packet bifurcation at a conical intersection in the A-band as well as coherent vibrations in the ground state of the parent molecules. Analysis of spectroscopic bifurcation signatures yields conical intersection crossing times of 15 ± 4 fs for CH3I, 14 ± 5 fs for C2H5I, and 24 ± 4 fs for i-C3H7I and t-C4H9I, respectively. Observations of coherent vibrations, resulting from a projection of A-band structural dynamics onto the ground state by resonant impulsive stimulated Raman scattering, indirectly reveal multimode C–I stretch and CCI bend vibrations in the A-bands of C2H5I, i-C3H7I, and t-C4H9I.
