Barometric pressure

The effects of alterations in barometric pressure on human beings are described. Human tolerances for gaseous environments and low and high barometric pressure are discussed, including effects on specific areas, such as the ear, lungs, teeth, and sinuses. Problems due to trapped gas within the body, high dynamic pressures on the body, and blasts are also considered.

Electronic simulation of a barometric pressure sensor for the meteorological monitor assembly

An analysis of the electronic simulation of barometric pressure used to self-test the counter electronics of the digital barometer is presented. The barometer is part of the Meteorological Monitor Assembly that supports navigation in deep space communication. The theory of operation of the digital barometer, the design details, and the verification procedure used with the barometric pressure simulator are presented.

NASA - DLA Land And Maritime Survey of Qualified Product List Manufacturers to Understand Barometric Pressure Testing Electrical Biasing Conditions

NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in collaboration with DLA Land and Maritime-VAC support is conducting a survey to obtain feedback on the device electrical bias procedures specified in method 1001 of MIL-STD-750-1, Barometric Pressure (reduced)’. The purpose of this survey is to obtain input from the DLA Land and Maritime qualified manufacturer community to determine whether additional bias details or information should be specified within the test method. The survey results will be used to improve any test method deficiencies and result in consistent test results.

Barometric pressure and gas composition

Many factors affecting artificial gas atmosphere, which is used to maintain life during space flight, are considered. The wide variability of barometric pressure in spacecraft, due in large measure to spacecraft design is discussed. Explosive decompression is described; this develops from instantaneous depressurization of the cabin. Decompression sickness is reviewed, including bubble growth and evolution of gas bubbles in organisms. Dysbarism, hypoxia, and hypercapnia are also discussed.

Geosat observations of sea level response to barometric pressure forcing

Altimeter and sea level pressure data from the Geosat mission are analyzed for evidence of inverted barometer responses of sea level to atmospheric pressure forcing. Estimates of the inverted barometer coefficient are given for a variety of geographic regions and time scales using various orbit error removal strategies. There is some sensitivity to the orbit error removal method, but the estimated coefficients show a clear latitudinal dependence and are generally between -0.5 cm/mbar and -0.9 cm/mbar. The southern oceans respond slightly more like an inverted barometer than the northern oceans for similar latitudes. The regression exhibits significant geographic variability, particularly near major circulation features and in the northern hemisphere. The results suggest that the inverted barometer approximation is resonable over much of the oceans, but that some sea level variability may be correlated with barometric pressure by means other than the inverted barometer effect.
