Direct satellite observations on bremsstrahlung radiation as a technique to investigate its role in meteorological processes

It was suggested that bremsstrahlung radiation associated with strong auroras (in turn associated with geomagnetic disturbances) may cause increased ionization near the 300-millibar level, which, in turn, leads to the formation of cirrus clouds. These clouds could modify the outgoing black body radiation rates and influence weather patterns. The first satellite observations on bremsstrahlung radiation produced in the atmosphere by precipitating energetic electrons are discussed. This type of observation affords the possibility of directly monitoring the bremsstrahlung energy input to the lower atmosphere over large segments of earth and at frequent intervals. Detailed measurements on the spatial and energy distributions of the bremsstrahlung radiation are feasible with present techniques, and satellite data on widespread bremsstrahlung events are presented and discussed. From comparison of the ion production rates from cosmic rays with those calculated from bremsstrahlung from precipitating energetic electrons, it is concluded that bremsstrahlung radiation is a negligible contributor to the ionization near the 300-millibar level.

The generation of gravitational waves. IV - Bremsstrahlung

Previously derived waveforms for gravitational bremsstrahlung are discussed along with their spectra and their limiting structure at high and low relative velocities. Waveforms and spectra are presented for a low-velocity bremsstrahlung encounter, and waveforms are given for encounters of arbitrary relative velocity. Limiting forms for the gravitational-wave amplitudes in the 'forward', 'intermediate', and 'backward' regions are derived in the high-velocity limit. The energy spectra seen by observers in the three regions are computed for arbitrary and high velocities. Simpler methods for analyzing special cases of the bremsstrahlung problem are examined, and the results of those methods are compared with the present results. Those methods include the quadrupole-moment and post-Newtonian formalisms, linear perturbations of the Schwarzschild metric, the method of colliding plane waves, the method of virtual quanta, and the zero-frequency limit. Classical gravitational bremsstrahlung is then compared with classical electromagnetic bremsstrahlung.

Thermal bremsstrahlung from high-temperature plasmas

Analytic expressions are derived for the total bremsstrahlung energy-loss rate per unit volume and the spectral emission rate of a very hot (10 million K to 1 billion K) plasma. At these temperatures the principal contribution to emission can be computed from the nonrelativistic limit of electron-ion bremsstrahlung in the Born approximation. Modifications to this rate are evaluated from (1) relativistic corrections to the thermal-electron velocity distribution function, (2) relativistic and spin corrections to the nonrelativistic electron-ion bremsstrahlung cross section, (3) electron-electron bremsstrahlung, and (4) first-order Born approximation corrections to electron-ion bremsstrahlung.

Low-energy electron-atom bremsstrahlung

This paper extends recent work providing an elementary calculation of bremsstrahlung and opacity associated with the scattering of low-energy electrons by neutral atoms and molecules. The method applies when the scattering potential is 'hard' or when the collision time is short, applying the classical soft-photon emission probability formula for arbitrary bremsstrahlung photon energy. However, now, in addition to correcting the probability factor for finite bremsstrahlung photon energy, another factor corrects for the reduced phase space available to the outgoing electron. The bremsstrahlung cross section and opacity are then computed directly from the elastic scattering cross section, determined experimentally or calculated; a small (approximately 10 percent) correction is computed from the anisotropic term in the elastic scattering cross section. The opacity is evaluated for electron scattering by H, He, and H2 using experimentally determined values for the elastic scattering cross section, and is compared with more elaborate calculations. The agreement is good (within 10 percent), indicating an accuracy for the general method comparable to variations among the results of different elaborate theoretical computations. The agreement seems to validate the basic approximation of short collision time even at large bremsstrahlung photon energy for electron energies and temperatures up to a few eV.

Experiment M409: Bremsstrahlung spectrometer

Spectrometric data were used to gain information for computation of the flux-energy spectra of bremsstrahlung inside the Gemini spacecraft and to determine if energetic electrons are able to penetrate the vehicle walls. The spectra were compared with computer predicted bremsstrahlung spectra by the use of data from beta spectrometers flown on Gemini 10 and 12 missions. The calculations of bremsstrahlung radiation involved uncertainties because of the small amount of information available on cross-section interaction and because of the complex, heterogeneous composition of the spacecraft. The bremsstrahlung detector was designed for time-differentiated measurement of the electron-induced gamma rays over a large section of the vehicle. Preliminary analysis of the data obtained during the missions was indicative that electrons did penetrate the spacecraft wall.

Bremsstrahlung in the atmosphere.

Results of calculations concerning the emission of bremsstrahlung by electrons in the upper atmosphere and the penetration of this radiation to atmospheric depths of 3 to 10 g/sq cm, where it can be measured by balloon-borne detectors. The calculations take into account the multiple scattering and slowing down of electrons, and the multiple Compton scattering and photoelectric absorption of bremsstrahlung photons. Numerical data have been generated for electron beams incident onto the atmosphere with energies between 20 keV and 2 MeV, assuming wide-area precipitation and an incident angular distribution isotropic over the downward hemisphere. The results relate the number and energy spectrum of the incident electrons to the bremsstrahlung flux spectrum at balloon heights. The interpretation of some observed bremsstrahlung flux spectra is attempted.

Direct satellite observations on bremsstrahlung radiation as a technique to investigate its role in meteorological processes

Satellite observations on bremsstrahlung produced in the atmosphere by precipitating energetic electrons are reported. This type of observation affords the possibility of directly monitoring the bremsstrahlung energy input to the lower atmosphere over large segments of the earth and at frequent intervals. From comparison of the ion production rates from cosmic rays with those calculated for bremsstrahlung from precipitating energetic electrons, it is concluded that bremsstrahlung is a negligible contributor to the ionization near the 300-mb level.

Bremsstrahlung constraints on proton-boron 11 inertial fusion

Proton-boron 11 (pB11) fusion is relatively safe and clean, but difficult to use for net power production, since bremsstrahlung radiation tends to radiate away power more quickly than it can be generated by fusion power, particularly once poisoning by alpha particles is taken into account. While in magnetic confinement fusion, this problem can be addressed by deconfining the alphas, in inertial confinement fusion (ICF), the alphas that heat the plasma linger for the duration of the reaction. Thus, it becomes essential to trap the bremsstrahlung radiation in the hotspot. Through burn simulations incorporating bremsstrahlung emission and reabsorption, we infer the necessary conditions to capture enough radiation to produce scientific breakeven in a pB11 ICF plasma. We find that breakeven requires a stagnation areal density roughly two orders of magnitude higher than the current state-of-the-art, at pressures three orders of magnitude higher.

Penetration of electrons and associated bremsstrahlung through aluminum targets

This paper contains a brief description of Monte Carlo programs designed to calculate the transport of fast electrons and associated bremsstrahlung through extended media. Two applications are discussed: (1) transmission of electrons through plane-parallel targets, and (2) emergence of secondary bremsstrahlung from such targets. It is shown that the predicted results are in reasonably good agreement with recent experiments for electron beams with energies up to 8 MeV incident normally on aluminum targets. Extensive new calculated data for transmission and thick-target bremsstrahlung production are presented for aluminum targets exposed to an isotropic electron flux.

Bremsstrahlung from cylindrical beta sources.

Refined experimental measurements of the bremsstrahlung number and energy fluxes from thick cylindrical sources of several nuclides are presented, dose rates calculated from experimental energy fluxes are compared with theoretical results based on Wyard's thick-target approximation, and experiments are correlated with both thick- and thin-target bremsstrahlung theory to obtain accurate values of bremsstrahlung yields. The data presented should prove useful for the design of radioisotope power supplies, particularly those used in spacecraft and in biological applications.

Preliminary results from the first satellite of a high-resolution germanium gamma-ray spectrometer: Backgrounds from electron bremsstrahlung and from electron-positron annihilation

Detailed data are presented on the bremsstrahlung backgrounds measured by a satellite-borne high resolution Ge(Li) gamma ray spectrometer. Two bremsstrahlung classes were discussed: (1) those arising from radiation belt electrons stopping in the vicinity of the spectrometer, and (2) bremsstrahlung produced by electrons precipitating into the earth's atmosphere.

Hard X-ray bremsstrahlung production in solar flares by high-energy proton beams

The possibility that solar hard X-ray bremsstrahlung is produced by acceleration of stationary electrons by fast-moving protons, rather than vice versa, as commonly assumed, was investigated. It was found that a beam of protons which involves 1836 times fewer particles, each having an energy 1836 times greater than that of the electrons in the equivalent electron beam model, has exactly the same bremsstrahlung yield for a given target, i.e., the mechanism has an energetic efficiency equal to that of conventional bremsstrahlung models. Allowance for the different degrees of target ionization appropriate to the two models (for conventional flare geometries) makes the proton beam model more efficient than the electron beam model, by a factor of order three. The model places less stringent constraints than a conventional electron beam model on the flare energy release mechanism. It is also consistent with observed X-ray burst spectra, intensities, and directivities. The altitude distribution of hard X-rays predicted by the model agrees with observations only if nonvertical injection of the protons is assumed. The model is inconsistent with gamma-ray data in terms of conventional modeling.

Relativistic electron transport and bremsstrahlung production in solar flares

A Monte Carlo simulation of ultrarelativistic electron transport in solar flare magnetic loops has been developed. It includes Coulomb, synchrotron, and bremsstrahlung energy losses; pitch-angle scattering by Alfven and whistler turbulence in the coronal region of the loop; and magnetic mirroring in the converging magnetic flux tubes beneath the transition region. Depth distributions, time profiles, energy spectra, and angular distributions of the resulting bremsstrahlung emission are calculated. It is found that both the preferential detection of solar flares with greater than 10 MeV emission near the limb of the sun and the observation of ultrarelativistic electron bremsstrahlung from flares on the disk are consequences of the loop transport model. The declining portions of the observed time profiles of greater than 10 MeV emission from solar flares can also be accounted for, and it is proposed that these portions are determined by transport and not acceleration.

Bremsstrahlung emission of the SN1987A interior

The down-scattering of gamma photons stores a significant fraction of the total energy in recoil electrons. This paper presents the bremsstrahlung emission of those recoil electrons in SN1987A. If the bolometric luminosity derives from radioactive decay, the bremsstrahlung emissivity must be present, but has not previously been treated. Initially it was our hope to account for the Ginga 16-28 keV measurement of SN1987A or to find a detectable X-ray luminosity near 1 keV for ROSAT. Although this bremsstrahlung emission fails to explain Ginga fluxes, it dominates the X-ray fluxes below 20 keV and can have detectable consequences for the X-ray lines from circumstellar matter. Results for day 175, 500, 1000, and 1500 are shown.

Influence of plasma screening on high-density inverse bremsstrahlung absorption

A spherical-implosion platform diagnosed with the “beamlets” scattered-light detector provides high sensitivity to the impact of plasma screening on inverse bremsstrahlung absorption. Contrary to the more restrictive screening length suggested previously [D. Turnbull et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 145103 (2023); D. Turnbull et al., Phys. Plasmas 31, 063304 (2024)], the beamlets data indicate that the electron-only Debye length is the relevant screening length for high-density inverse bremsstrahlung absorption. Furthermore, using the updated absorption model, we simulate the OMEGA direct-drive inertial confinement fusion implosion database and show that bang times are well reproduced without any ad hoc multipliers.

Characterization of Gas Bremsstrahlung sources at the Electron-Ion Collider

This report estimates the potential impact of Gas Bremsstrahlung, generated as the electron beam traverses the straight sections of the storage ring and impinges onto selected locations of the Electron-Ion Collider. The source terms were calculated for routine operation scenarios at three different energies: 5, 10 and 18 GeV, using the FLUKA Monte Carlo particle transport and interaction code. The source term’s power distributions were validated and compared with the Gas Bremsstrahlung produced in the long straight sections of the National Synchrotron Light Source II storage ring.
