Household Energy Burden in Lawrence, Massachusetts [Slides]

The City of Lawrence consists of 18 census tracts, of those, 9 census tracts have an average energy burden (the percent of income spent on energy bills) of 6% or greater. The Lawrence Stakeholders Coalition's (LSC) main goal is to "Reduce energy burden and create well-paying local jobs and businesses by increasing the distribution and use of sustainable technologies such as heat pumps, community and rooftop solar, and weatherization." As part of that goal, the LSC is interested in understanding Lawrence's pathway to electrification, specifically through the building sector. This technical assistance aims to assist the LSC's electrification and energy burden reduction planning by: 1) Identifying the most energy-burdened households by owner-occupied and renter-occupied housing status; 2) Identifying and quantifying the characteristics of the most energy-burdened housing units by housing type, age, and heating fuel type; 3) Identifying the tenure and housing types of the most energy-burdened and prevalent households for subsequent ResStock analysis of cost-effective efficiency upgrades.

Community Solar Potential Analysis for Lawrence, Massachusetts

This report was prepared as part of the U.S. Department of Energy's Communities Local Energy Action Program (Communities LEAP) pilot competitive technical assistance for the Lawrence Massachusetts Stakeholder Coalition (LSC). In accordance with Technical Assistance Area 1 (Community Solar Analysis) and in coordination with the LSC, the UMass Clean Energy Extension (CEE) research team conducted a high-level geographic information system (GIS) evaluation of potential community solar (CS) development sites within Lawrence, and its three bordering towns of Andover, North Andover, and Methuen.

Sabathani Community Center Solar + Battery Resilience Hub

To meet south Minneapolis, Minnesota's clean energy goals, the community exploring opportunities to transition Sabathani Community Center into a resilience hub to provide critical community services during power outages, including shelter and warmth or cooling, continued food distribution services, and more. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory, through the U.S. Department of Energy's Communities LEAP (Local Energy Action Program) pilot, worked with Sabathani to quantify the costs and benefits of installing stand-alone solar photovoltaics (PV) and PV paired with battery systems to reduce energy costs, avoid emissions, and improve resilience.

Communities LEAP (Local Energy Action Program) Cohort 2

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Communities LEAP (Local Energy Action Program) partners with low income, energy-burdened communities that are disadvantaged and/or experience direct economic impacts from reducing their historical reliance on fossil fuels to build community-driven action plans for clean energy-related economic development.
